Dubai's sky turns black after another skyscraper bursts into flames

Posted: 02 Apr 2017 12:34 PM PDT

Dubai's sky turns black after another skyscraper bursts into flamesBlack smoke smothered Dubai's sky on Sunday after a fire broke out near the world's tallest building. The desert metropolis looked almost apocalyptic as dark clouds rose from a high-rise tower complex being built alongside Dubai's biggest mall. SEE ALSO: How a drone helped firefighters battle a blaze in New York City No one was injured in the inferno, though three workers were rescued from inside the structure and taken to the hospital for examination, authorities said. Dramatic skyscraper blazes are a growing problem in Dubai and other rapidly developing parts of the United Arab Emirates. Most of Dubai's fires have been fueled by paneling on the sides of many buildings. The paneling, known as cladding, can be made with fire-resistant material. However, some Dubai buildings instead use quick-burning tiles, without any breaks to stop or slow a fire. Sunday's fire happened only a block away from The Address Downtown Dubai, a 63-story tower that caught fire on New Year's Eve on 2015. The world's tallest tower, a 2,717-foot-high structure called Burj Khalifa, is part of the Downtown Dubai development. عملية اطفاء حريق برج فونتن فيوز . . #سلامتكم_سعادتنا #دبي #الامارات #الامارات_العربية_المتحدة #997 #dubai #uae #dcd #dcd997 #dubai_civil_defenceالدفاع_المدني_دبي A post shared by الدفاع المدني دبي (@dcd997) on Apr 1, 2017 at 11:43pm PDT Officials with the Dubai Civil Defense described this week's fire as an "accident" that began in a parking level of The Address Residences Fountain Views complex. The 60-story structure will eventually connect to the massive Dubai Mall across the street. UAE authorities say they have changed fire safety rules in the territory to address the rising danger from burning buildings, but haven't offered many details. The Xiongan New Area, located some 100 kilometres (62 miles) southwest of downtown Beijing in Hebei province, will rival south China's Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, established in the 1980s, and Shanghai's Pudong New Area, set up in the 1990s. The move was a "major historic and strategic choice made by the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core" and would be "crucial for millennium to come", the official Xinhua news agency reported late Saturday.

Venezuela opposition turns ire on Supreme Court judges

Venezuela opposition turns ire on Supreme Court judgesBy Andrew Cawthorne and Girish Gupta CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's opposition lawmakers said on Sunday they will push for the removal of Supreme Court judges whom they accuse of acting on behalf of the ruling Socialists after the top tribunal briefly assumed control of congress last week. While the move by the opposition-led congress would only be symbolic because it remains powerless, it could add to pressure on unpopular president Nicolas Maduro as he tries to defuse the furor over what critics saw as a lurch into dictatorship. The Supreme Court's ruling last week that it would take over functions of the National Assembly triggered international condemnation and opposition protests at home.

Israel fears 'Iranian crescent' in Middle East

Israel fears 'Iranian crescent' in Middle EastIsrael fears an "Iranian crescent" may be forming in the Middle East because of Tehran's influence in Syria and its connections with regional Shiite groups, an intelligence official said Monday. The comments from Chagai Tzuriel, director general of Israel's intelligence ministry, illustrate his country's growing concerns over its arch-foe Iran's involvement in the conflict in neighbouring Syria. Iran's support for Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah, which also backs Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, also concerns Israel, as does Tehran's influence in Iraq and its support for groups such as the Huthi rebels in Yemen.

Let’s hope the next Galaxy Note 8 looks better than this

Let's hope the next Galaxy Note 8 looks better than this

Samsung is expected to launch three flagship smartphones this year, including the Galaxy S8 that's already available for preorder, the Galaxy X that's supposed to be its first foldable smartphone, and the Galaxy Note 8 phablet that's already confirmed to arrive in the second half of the year.

However, Samsung does have a problem regarding the Galaxy Note 8. It already has one, and it's hideous.

Almost four years ago, Samsung started selling the device below under the name Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0. By today's mobile design standards is simply hideous. Just look at those bezels...

Launched at MWC 2013, the Galaxy Note 8.0 was part of Samsung's second generation of Note-branded tablets. The device shipped with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean on board and had an entry price of $399 (for the 16GB version).

It may have been an attractive proposition at the time, though the Note series of tablets never saw the same popularity of the Note phones and was soon discontinued.

Not many people might remember the Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet, but the device did exist. With that in mind, I can't help but wonder whether the tablet will affect in any way Samsung's naming scheme for the upcoming Galaxy Note 8 phablet. They may be four years apart, but we can't have two devices with almost the same name, can we?

Samsung's DJ Koh confirmed earlier this year that the Note line will not be discontinued following the Galaxy Note 7 recall, and teased the Galaxy Note 7 will get a major upgrade. "I will bring back a better, safer and very innovative Note 8," Koh said. You don't suppose he meant the tablet, do you?

New York, other states take on Trump over energy efficiency

New York, other states take on Trump over energy efficiencyBy Jonathan Stempel NEW YORK (Reuters) - A coalition of U.S. states has mounted a broad legal challenge against what it called the Trump administration's illegal suspension of rules to improve the energy efficiency of ceiling fans, portable air conditioners and other products. The challenge, also joined by environmental groups, came after the U.S. Department of Energy last month delayed standards proposed under the Obama administration to reduce air pollution and operating costs associated with the products. Ten Democratic attorneys general, plus New York City and a Pennsylvania regulator, on Monday notified Energy Secretary Rick Perry of their plan to sue in 60 days for stalling proposed standards for air compressors, commercial boilers, portable air conditioners, power supplies, and walk-in coolers and freezers.
