Feds Questioning Rape Investigation Involving a University of Michigan Football Player Posted: 25 Feb 2014 03:52 PM PST The Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights is investigating the University of Michigan over its handling of a rape allegation involving a football player at the school. S.African govt livid at university's 'Nazi salute' initiation Posted: 25 Feb 2014 01:32 PM PST South Africa's higher education ministry on Tuesday condemned an alleged Nazi-style salute staged recently by first year students during an induction at a university southwest of Johannesburg. Students at one of the campuses of the North West University had performed the Nazi-style "Sieg Heil" salute during a supposed orientation ceremony, the local Beeld newspaper reported last week. It said the pictures showed a group of students "dressed in uniforms, marching in unison like troopers and, most disturbingly doing the ... Nazi-style fascist salute". The university authorities have apologised for any offence caused by the images, according to government, and they denied it was a Nazi salute, but a tradition of first year students "singing a greeting" to the head of their residence committee. |

First Comes Love, Then Comes House? More Unmarried Couples Are Buying Homes Posted: 25 Feb 2014 07:15 AM PST At a time when many of their peers are still renting or living with mom and dad, Stephanie Siewert, 22, and her boyfriend of six years moved into their first purchased three-story townhouse last month in Southern California. Family members wondered why the couple didn't rent together or get married first, but the two were adamant about building equity and getting a low interest rate while they could. Alida Almonte, 31, and her boyfriend feel similarly, so they bought a three-bedroom colonial together last August on Long Island, N.Y. "Interest rates were going up, and we would rather have spent our savings on a down payment on a home than a wedding," she says. As young people delay marriage, often in pursuit of careers or advanced degrees, a study released by Coldwell Banker Real Estate LLC last April found that a quarter of married couples between ages 18 and 34 bought their first home together before walking down the aisle. |
