6.6-magnitude quake hits Indonesia's Sulawesi Posted: 29 May 2017 09:39 AM PDT A shallow, 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit inland on the central Indonesian island of Sulawesi Monday, US seismologists said, causing people to panic but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Muhammad Guntur, who lives on the outskirts of the town, said it was felt strongly. A hotel worker in Poso also said that people panicked when the quake struck but that things had returned to normal there. |

Posted: 29 May 2017 05:43 AM PDT Pentagon chief James Mattis has said that the US is "accelerating the tempo" of the fight against Isis, and that civilian deaths should be anticipated as a "fact of life". While US forces operating in Syria and Iraq do "do everything humanly possible" to prevent the loss of innocent life, "Civilian casualties are a fact of life in this sort of situation," General Mattis told CBS' Face the Nation on Sunday. The interview comes after new figures from war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights found that the last four-week period was the deadliest for Syrian civilians on record since the US-led coalition bombing campaign began in 2014. |

Ivanka Trump's blog tweets something dumber than her father on Memorial Day Posted: 29 May 2017 07:46 AM PDT Memorial day is supposed to be the day Americans come together to pay respect to the people who've died while serving the country—or, if you're Ivanka Trump, make popsicles. On Sunday, the Ivanka Trump brand posted a painfully tone deaf tweet just in time for the holiday. SEE ALSO: 8th graders refuse to take a photo with Paul Ryan because they don't "want to be associated with him" What a better way to honor fallen soldiers than with a nostalgic childhood treat and a little "adult beverage?" (Commence: gentle teeheehees). Make champagne popsicles this #MemorialDay: https://t.co/1m6ceESqnS — Ivanka Trump HQ (@IvankaTrumpHQ) May 28, 2017 Of course, Memorial Day also doubles as the start of summer for many in the United States, so it's not exactly surprising—or wrong even—that the brand came up with a recipe. But c'mon, champagne popsicles? What exactly are you celebrating @IvankaTrumpHQ? @IvankaTrump #memorialday https://t.co/InGkqd8yH9 — VoteVets (@votevets) May 29, 2017 Presidents and their senior advisors are typically expected to post something not horrible on the day. And it felt particularly hypocritical for some that Ivanka, who is a champagne popsicle of a human, posted about drinking such an expensive beverage when her family is proposing massive social service cuts to low income families. Even Trump appears to have let a real adult craft his tweet today. Today we remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in serving. Thank you, God bless your families & God bless the USA! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 29, 2017 Is this the moment he became president? Since joining the White House, Ivanka Trump has chosen to put her company in a trust. Ivanka remains the sole beneficiary of the trust and continues to wield power over the brand. Lawmakers have expressed concern that, given the nature of the trust, it'll be difficult to enforce monitoring. Concerned about corruption? Oh well. Just grab some of your best girlfriends and champagne popsicle the pain away. WATCH: Take the party wherever you go with this portable beer pong table |
Man arrested after sheriff's deputy, 7 others shot in Mississippi Posted: 28 May 2017 04:06 PM PDT A Mississippi man went on a shooting spree overnight, killing a sheriff's deputy and seven other people in three separate locations in rural Lincoln County before the suspect was taken into custody by police, authorities said on Sunday. Willie Corey Godbolt, 35, was arrested and was being treated in a hospital for a gunshot wound, according to Warren Strain, a spokesman for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety. The sheriff's deputy, identified as William Durr, was fatally shot after responding to an emergency call regarding a domestic dispute late on Saturday night at a house in Bogue Chitto, a small community about 69 miles south of Jackson, the state capital. |

Secretary of Defense James Mattis said on Sunday the US had "accelerated" its tactics against the Islamic State, moving from a policy of "attrition" to one of "annihilation". Somali Islamist insurgents stone man to death for adultery Posted: 28 May 2017 12:09 PM PDT By Feisal Omar MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Somali Islamist insurgents stoned a man to death on Sunday as punishment for alleged adultery, they said, a reminder that the militia is still strong enough to carry out public executions despite losing its grip on most towns and cities. Hundreds of witnesses watched the death of 44-year-old Dayow Mohamed Hassan in Ramo Adey village in the south-central Bay region, the regional governor representing the al Qaeda-linked insurgency said. Moalim Geedow told Reuters that Hassan was buried neck-deep in a hole then pelted with stones. |

Iraq presses Mosul assault, UN warns of danger to civilians Posted: 29 May 2017 07:43 AM PDT Iraqi forces pressed forward Monday with an offensive against jihadist-held areas of Mosul as the United Nations warned of grave danger to civilians in the final stages of the battle. More than seven months into the massive operation to recapture Mosul from the Islamic State group, Iraqi forces have retaken the city's east and large parts of its western side, but the jihadists are putting up tough resistance in areas they still hold. "Our units are continuing to advance... and entered Al-Saha al-Oula and Al-Zinjili and Al-Shifaa neighbourhoods and the Republican Hospital," said Joint Operations Command spokesman Yahya Rasool. |

Orangutan climbs out of enclosure while rescuing her baby Posted: 28 May 2017 08:20 PM PDT We know that orangutans are great climbers — in fact, it seems like they could just hop out of their enclosure, if they wanted to. It turns out that Sekara, an orangutan at the Perth Zoo, did just that when her 5-year-old baby Sungai lost grip on some equipment and fell into a garden bed on Sunday, according to WA Today. SEE ALSO: Rejected penguin has found new outlook on life with cutout of anime character Visitors were evacuated from the area for safety, but zoo staff were quick to respond to the incident. "She seemed really calm, just confused on where to go next. Everyone around was really calm and giving her space as well. The whole incident was probably only 30-40 seconds before staff arrived," Jess McConnell, a witness, told the news outlet. Perth Zoo spokesperson Danielle Henry told the news outlet that the incident was "over within 15 minutes," and Sekara remained calm and returned to keepers afterward. "Sekara is an excellent mum and a bit of a helicopter parent, and the only way to get to him was to pop onto the visitor board. She retrieved him and returned to the enclosure on her own," Henry said. "Keepers were calling to her, and she has a very good relationship with them." The zoo will also conduct a review of the incident. It's not the first time an orangutan has escaped the zoo's enclosure. A couple of years ago, a 5-year-old orangutan named Teliti somehow got out and had a wander along a boardwalk. Orangutang out at Perth zoo! Came down to play with my son. Pressure on S.Africa's Zuma as ANC leadership meets Posted: 28 May 2017 06:36 AM PDT South Africa's President Jacob Zuma faced further opposition at a meeting of his party's top leadership Sunday but managed to sidestep a no-confidence vote after a turbulent three-day gathering. The meeting in Pretoria comes as Zuma faces growing criticism within the ruling African National Congress, which sharpened after a March cabinet reshuffle when he sacked respected finance minister Pravin Gordhan. Speaking to local media on Saturday, ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said the leadership was aware of reports that there was going to be blood on the floor. |

Tesla releases list of Model 3 premium features, including an optional glass roof Posted: 29 May 2017 02:53 PM PDT With Tesla's final Model 3 reveal set to take place sometime in July, we won't have to wait long to see what the final version of Tesla's highly-anticipated mass market EV is going to look like. In the interim, Tesla a few days ago released an updated product sheet comparing the Model 3's specs to the Model S. In doing so, we were able to glean a treasure trove of information about what the Model 3 will bring to the table. For example, we learned that the Model 3 won't be anywhere close to as fast as the Model S, hardly a surprise given the car's $35,000 price tag. Specifically, the Model 3 will feature a 0-60 MPH time of 5.6 seconds. As far as range is concerned, the entry-level Model 3 will be able to go 215 miles on a single charge. Amid a slew of other details, one of the more interesting data points from Tesla's product sheet relayed that the Model 3 will be a lot less customizable than the Model S. Whereas the Model S is currently available in more than 1500 different configurations, the Model 3 will have fewer than 100 configuration options available. While this may disappoint some prospective buyers, it's actually an incredibly smart move on Tesla's part. Remember, Tesla has a bad habit of missing production deadlines. That said, anything Tesla can do to help streamline the production process is a step in the right direction. Historically, Tesla has shot itself in the foot by being overly ambitious with a new release, with the delays and technical problems surrounding the Model X launch being a prime example. Having said that, it's not as if the Model 3 will come in a one-size-fits-all type of package. On the contrary, some intriguing configuration options will exist. To this point, Tesla recently updated its product sheet with a few examples of premium features Model 3 buyers will be able to purchase. That updated list now reads:

Iran leader slams Saudis as America's 'milking cow' Posted: 27 May 2017 11:22 PM PDT Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei launched a fierce attack against regional rival Saudi Arabia, saying it was being pumped "like a milking cow" by "infidel" Americans. "These people (the Saudis) appear to believe in the Koran... but in practice they act against its teachings," Khamenei said at a meeting on Saturday to mark the start of the holy month of Ramadan. "But in reality there is no closeness and, as the Americans have said, they are just there to pump them for money like a milking cow, and later slaughter them," he added. |
Jared Kushner's charmed life is about to come to a screeching halt | Walter Shapiro Posted: 29 May 2017 06:20 AM PDT Perhaps Jared Kushner really believed that his New York real-estate skills set him up to bring peace to the Middle East, solve the opioid crisis, run a government SWAT team of business experts and protect his father-in-law from disloyal White House advisers. Or maybe Kushner just calculated that all the hype surrounding his White House role was a not-to-be-missed family branding opportunity. After all, the Washington Post recently watched as his sister, Nicole Kushner Meyer, hawked American visas in Beijing to would-be Chinese investors in a troubled Kushner New Jersey real-estate development. |

Hey tech bros, we don't want your gimmicky dating apps Posted: 29 May 2017 12:30 AM PDT Dating apps are totally out of control. And, we only have tech bros to blame. As an online dater, I've had enough of the never-ending barrage of new, gimmicky dating apps from the tech world. For the love of all that is swipe-able, please make it stop. SEE ALSO: The New Language of Dating, Analyzed Currently, not a single week goes by without the launch of a supposedly quirky dating app claiming to offer something revolutionary and never-before-achieved by the world of online daters. In the past few months alone, we've seen the release of a "slow" dating app which makes you seduce matches through the art of conversation before you get to see their profile pic. Image: Appetence / mashable compositeThere's an app that makes you talk on the phone; an app that lets you play matchmaker for your friends; and an app that conducts background checks on everyone who signs up. The Hotline app makes you kick things off with a potential match by sharing an actual phone call.Image: hotlineThe list doesn't end there, though. There's an app for no-strings-attached casual sex, which claims to be "Tinder Minus Marriage-Minded Daters." There are sites dedicated to Disney-loving daters, sites for people who love hot sauce, and there's even been an app for bacon lovers. We're reaching a point where literally every type of interest or hobby will have its own dating app. Often I wonder if these app launches are apps, or just publicity stunts for developers hungry for fame. Image: CASUALXWell, I'd like to make it perfectly clear that I did not ask for any of these apps, and nor did any of the other myriad online daters I know. But, with the dating app industry generating approximately $2 billion in revenue each year in the U.S. alone, is it any wonder tech bros are keen to muscle in on the very lucrative matchmaking market? As a single woman with a desire to someday find a match, I've been identified as a consumer who is clearly desperately in need of an endless array of bizarrely niche apps to help me find someone who shares my love of Cholula . But, as the consumer, I can say that these apps are genuinely the last thing I need. It's a numbers game Like many people, the two dating apps I use — Tinder and Bumble — take up way too much of my time. With, Tinder's 50 million+ users and Bumble's 11.5 million users, there's no shortage of people to swipe right or left on. Every time a new app is released, I usually download these new apps to see what they're all about. But, more often than not, they tell me that "no one is nearby". Image: rachel thompson / mashable If I'm in the centre of London, one of the largest cities in the world, how can there be no users in my area? Image: rachel thompson / mashableFrankly, I just don't have the time to spare for apps with considerably smaller user bases. PR professional Kris Ruby has tried some of the more niche dating apps as well as the mainstream ones. "I tried some of the niche vegetarian dating apps but found the user base wasn't as high on them as some of the other more mainstream apps," says Ruby. She says she likes the idea of matching with a user who has a core interest in common with her, but ultimately it comes down to numbers. "In order for many of these niche apps to truly match you with someone, they need to increase their community size so you are connecting with more users." Is going granular pointless? Jack Knowles, founder of Temptr dating app, says most daters would rather have a selection of millions of potential matches rather than a few hundred. "There are probably too many dating apps and the leaders will always remain the go-to apps for single people," says Knowles. He says niche apps are great, and he wishes the "guys launching them" all the best. Enough with the gimmicks, tech bros. We just don't have the time or the energy to waste on these bizarrely specific apps with no users. WATCH: Forget pottery class, 3D printing glass is so much cooler |
