Ex-CIA director on Trump’s possible ties to Russia: ‘There’s a lot of smoke’ Posted: 06 Mar 2017 01:25 PM PST "This does deserve an investigation because there are just so many coincidences," Hayden told Yahoo News and Finance Anchor Bianna Golodryga on Monday. Hayden pointed out, for example, that Roger Stone — Trump's longtime friend and a former campaign adviser — said he had a "back channel" to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. |
Former secretary of defense: Trump travel ban is ‘counterproductive’ Posted: 06 Mar 2017 01:49 PM PST After his original travel ban was stymied in federal court in January, Trump signed a scaled-back version Monday. The new executive order no longer bans citizens of Iraq from entering the country and does not include the original language favoring "religious minorities" from the Middle Eastern countries. |

Energy Transfer Partners LP is building the $3.8 billion pipeline to move crude from the Northern Plains to the Midwest and then on to the Gulf of Mexico. |
Internet quickly turns GOP's Obamacare replacement plan into a meme Posted: 06 Mar 2017 07:12 PM PST The Republicans unveiled their healthcare plan on Monday night and it's looking like a weak replacement for Obamacare. It defunds Planned Parenthood, rolls back the Medicaid expansion, restricts abortion, and lets insurers jack up premiums by 30 percent if there's a lapse in coverage. Oh! And there's a big tax cut for CEOs making more than $500,000 and a weirdly specific ban on lottery winners getting Medicaid. The mystery of why pandas are black and white has been solved Posted: 06 Mar 2017 03:14 PM PST We finally know why pandas are black and white. It has nothing to do with them being so very, very cute — instead, its meant to make pandas look tough, according to a new study. SEE ALSO: One Tokyo restaurant's success and failure is decided by pandas having sex Pandas are one of the few mammals that don't have coloring that matches their environment. They're a study in contrasts, with black fur that matches dark forests and white fur for snow-filled landscapes. A team of researchers from UC Davis and California State University, Long Beach, wanted to know the adaptive significance of those colors. (They're the same team who figured out zebras have black and white stripes to keep away blood-sucking flies.) Image: Paula Bronstein/Getty Images They found that the panda's white face, neck, belly, backside and rump (their word) help blend into a snowy scene. But the dark markings around their eyes and ears stand out in a snowy environment. That's because, according to the study published last week in Behavioral Ecology , those dark spots and markings are meant to show predators like snow leopards and jackals they are indeed a bear and should be feared as such, or as the scientists said, "signaling intent about ferocity." Those dark eyes may also help other bears identify the creature as a fellow bear. While many theories exist for the specific and consistent coloring of pandas, the black parts don't appear to be involved in helping the mammals regulate temperature, obscure the animal's shape or reduce eye glare, the researchers found. Now if we could solve the mystery of what makes these animals so adorable. BONUS: These tattoos conduct electricity, turning you into a very basic cyborg |

IT services firm stocks dip after government suspends fast tech visas Posted: 06 Mar 2017 12:55 PM PST By Noel Randewich SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Technology services company shares dipped on Monday after the Trump administration announced it would temporarily suspend expedited applications for H-1B visas widely used by foreign tech workers. U.S. shares of Indian IT company Infosys Ltd fell 1.2 percent and Wipro Ltd edged down 0.2 percent after the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said on Friday that it would suspend "premium processing" of the visas for up to six months. Following President Donald Trump's election in November, Infosys and Wipro sold off due to concerns he would keep promises to crack down on immigrants who he said were taking jobs from U.S. citizens. |
Five troops, 10 militants dead in Pakistan border raid Posted: 06 Mar 2017 02:54 AM PST Five Pakistani soldiers and 10 militants were killed in a coordinated overnight raid at several border posts on the frontier with Afghanistan, the military said Monday. The fighting took place in Mohmand, one of Pakistan's so-called tribal districts that form a buffer zone between the two countries, where the military has been battling Islamist militants for over a decade. Pakistan's military issued a brief statement providing casualty figures, without mentioning which militant group was involved. |

Fan-made iPhone 8 imagines how iOS 11’s new ‘Function Bar’ might work Posted: 06 Mar 2017 11:51 AM PST Apple's iPhone 8 release date might still be more than six months away, but you wouldn't know it to look at all the chatter around the web right now. New reports claiming to reveal details about Apple's upcoming iPhone 8 emerge each and every day, and they continue to paint an increasingly clear picture of Apple's next-generation flagship iPhone. Increasingly clear, yes, but there's still a very long way to go before we know exactly what to expect from Apple's tenth-anniversary iPhone. In the meantime, people continue to image what might be in store from Apple based on the rumblings we've heard thus far. Based on what we've learned from insiders with impressive track records like KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 8 will feature an exciting new design that pack a large 5.8-inch OLED display into a compact housing that is roughly the same size as Apple's smaller iPhone 7. How will Apple fit its biggest ever smartphone screen into a phone the size of the current 4.7-inch iPhone? According to reports, the phone will sport an exciting new design that removes the home button and does away with much of the empty space surrounding the screen on current iPhone models. As a result, the phone will feature a face that is nearly all display. The larger screen and embedded Touch ID fingerprint scanner are exciting for a number of reasons, but one is the new function area that will supposedly occupy the bottom of the display much of the time. Like the Touch Bar on Apple's latest MacBook Pro models, this area will supposedly change dynamically based on which apps are being used at the time, offering shortcuts and other functions that can be customized by developers. We still have no idea if these reports are accurate, and we don't know what features iOS 11 will offer in the "Function Bar" supposedly headed to the iPhone 8. One Apple fan on the forums at MacRumors decided to create renders that imagine what we might see at the bottom of Apple's new OLED displays, and the results are pretty awesome. Forum user deuxani posted a series of images recently (via MacRumors)that show this new function area in action on the iPhone's home screen, lock screen, and in a few apps. On the lock screen, a fingerprint graphic would indicate that the user can unlock the phone with a Touch ID scan. Meanwhile on the home screen, the function area might only display a home button. Inside apps is where things get interesting, though. In these fan-made mockups, the Instagram app offers Function Bar shortcuts to post a new photo and to the app's private messenger inbox. Meanwhile in the Twitter app, a shortcut to post a new tweet might be available. And when the user visits someone's profile page, there might be a shortcut to follow that user. Again, these are fan-made concept images and we have no idea how closely they represent reality, if at all. Given how adamantly Apple is pushing the Touch Bar on the MacBook Pro, however, bringing similar functionality to iOS devices may indeed be high on the company's list of priorities. |

Poachers kill rare giant elephant in Kenya Posted: 06 Mar 2017 07:25 AM PST One of Africa's oldest and largest elephants was killed by poachers in Kenya on Monday, according to a conservation group that protects the dwindling group of giant "tuskers". Richard Moller of the Tsavo Trust told AFP that Satao II, named after another famed giant killed in 2014, was found dead on Monday and was believed to have been shot with a poisoned arrow, though this had not been confirmed. "Luckily, through the work we do with the Kenyan Wildlife Service (KWS), we were able to find the carcass before the poachers could recover the ivory," said Moller. |
Trump signs revised travel ban, exempts Iraqis Posted: 06 Mar 2017 06:12 PM PST US President Donald Trump signed a revised ban on refugees and on travelers from six Muslim-majority nations Monday, scaling back the order to exempt Iraqis and permanent US residents. With his first attempt frozen by federal courts, Trump signed a second order suspending refugee admissions for 120 days and halting new visas for travelers from Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Yemen and Sudan. The White House said Trump -- who is embroiled in controversy over his aides' links to Russia and his own Twitter outbursts -- signed the order behind closed doors Monday morning. |

US troops train Iraqi forces in key bridging skills Posted: 06 Mar 2017 01:21 PM PST Iraqi soldiers manoeuvre sections of floating bridge on a muddy, man-made lake as American trainers instruct them in skills that have played a key role in the war against jihadists. Green metal boats churn a frothy wake as they propel the sections before the Iraqi forces connect them together during the training at the Taji military base, north of Baghdad. Members of the Iraqi army's Bridging Battalion who have completed the training are deployed in the area of Mosul, where government-led forces are fighting to retake the Islamic State jihadist group's last urban stronghold in the country. |

GM sells Opel/Vauxhall to PSA: is it a win-win? Posted: 06 Mar 2017 07:59 AM PST This morning, General Motors confirmed that it has sold both its Opel/Vauxhall subsidiary and its European financial arm to Paris-based PSA for a total of €2.2 billion ($2.3 billion). Naturally, GM has pitched this as a win-win for itself and for PSA (formerly known as PSA Peugeot Citroen), but is it? Only time will tell, but on the face of it, the deal definitely seems to be a boost for GM. That's not just because of the company's $2.3 billion payday or the ongoing revenue GM will receive from PSA, which will license GM's patented technology for use on Opel and Vauxhall vehicles in the near future. Beyond that, the spin-off slims down GM's portfolio--a practice that, paired with a controversial restructuring, has helped the automaker recover from the Great Recession. Perhaps most importantly, the sell-off of Opel/Vauxhall gives GM more freedom to focus on its current priorities, like electric vehicles, autonomous technology, mobility offerings, and growing auto markets like China. Whether GM is taking a risk by backing out of Europe is a matter for debate. As for PSA, it's a slightly different story. On the plus side, the acquisition of Opel/Vauxhall makes PSA the second-largest automaker in Europe behind Volkswagen, giving the company 17 percent of the European market. That certainly offers PSA some degree of bragging rights and an enlarged footprint. PSA will also see additional revenue from loans and leases brokered through GM's former financial services arm. However, like the European auto market, Opel/Vauxhall is in a period of recovery and transition, and it's not much of a money-maker at the moment. PSA expects Opel/Vauxhall to achieve a profit margin of two percent by 2020 and six percent by 2026, at which point economies of scale with other PSA brands could save the company some €1.7 billion per year ($1.8 billion). Those seem like a number of big "ifs", though, especially in light of uncertainties about growth in the economically and politically fragile European market. Add to that the trouble PSA may have in distinguishing between Peugeot, Citroen, and Opel/Vauxhall for consumers, and it seems like GM may have gotten the better deal. |

Arctic sea ice may vanish even if world achieves climate goal: study Posted: 06 Mar 2017 09:16 AM PST By Alister Doyle OSLO (Reuters) - Arctic sea ice may vanish in summers this century even if governments achieve a core target for limiting global warming set by almost 200 nations in 2015, scientists said on Monday. Arctic sea ice has been shrinking steadily in recent decades, damaging the livelihoods of indigenous peoples and wildlife such as polar bears while opening the region to more shipping and oil and gas exploration. Under the 2015 Paris Agreement, governments set a goal of limiting the rise in average world temperatures to well below 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial times, with an aspiration of just 1.5C (2.7F). |

First report on the Galaxy Note 8 suggests Samsung is going big Posted: 06 Mar 2017 12:42 PM PST "Galaxy Note" has become a dirty phrase associated with fire and disappointment in the last few months, so it's easy to forget that the Note series used to be Samsung's flagship. Before it started spontaneously combusting, reviews fawned over the Note 7's non-flammable design and features like the iris sensor. So obviously, Samsung is going to want to get its reputation back with the next Note device, set to land later this year. With a launch not expected until October, we don't have much by the way of leaks yet, but what we do have looks good.
A report from SamMobile claims that the in-house codename for the Galaxy Note 8 is "Great." That's a good sign for things to come, unless Samsung is trying some kind of Jedi mind trick to confuse the world's tech bloggers. The Galaxy Note 8 is going to have a tough time this year, as it will likely be debuting right after the iPhone 8. Apple is expected to go all-in this year with a new iPhone 8 model as well as incremental upgrades to the existing lineup with the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus. The iPhone 8 is likely to feature a 5.8-inch OLED display with minimal bezel, a fingerprint sensor built into the screen, and the possibility of an Apple Pencil-like stylus. That makes the iPhone 8 a direct competitor to what has previously been easy Note sales, thanks to the big screen that the Note devices are famous for. Even worse for the Note 8, SamMobile is also reporting that we might see a refurbished Note 7 launched in South Korea. That's good news for the environment, as it means the Note 7 might end up as more than just landfill, but it's not exactly going to do wonders for Note 8 sales. |
