Egyptian family to carry cross in Easter pope ritual Posted: 14 Apr 2017 02:32 PM PDT An Egyptian family will carry the cross at an Easter procession attended by Pope Francis Friday, with tens of thousands of faithful expected to hold candles aloft in prayer at Rome's Colosseum. The holy week commemorating the last days of Jesus's life had a bloody beginning last Sunday with attacks claimed by the Islamic State group on two Coptic churches in Egypt that left 45 people dead. The pope is set to visit Egypt at the end of the month despite the church attacks. |

Canada unveils legislation to legalize cannabis Posted: 14 Apr 2017 02:29 AM PDT Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government unveiled legislation Thursday to fully legalize marijuana, making Canada only the second country to do so, after Uruguay. While medical marijuana use has been regulated in this country since 2001, cannabis remains a controlled substance. Its legalization and regulation for recreational use is expected in 2018, in time for Canada's national holiday on July 1. |

'Badass' national park flooded with fan mail after fighting Trump on Twitter Posted: 14 Apr 2017 03:01 PM PDT In the days immediately following President Donald Trump's inauguration, when the world was in need of a climate change defender, a few National Park Service Twitter accounts epically rose to the challenge. The rebellious Badlands National Park Twitter account went rogue in January, fighting the president's climate change denial by sharing environmental facts. We've now learned that in addition to the positive response on social media, the staff at the national park was flooded with messages of love in the form of handwritten postcards and emails from hundreds of thankful supporters around the country. The emails and postcards were among other documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. SEE ALSO: 'Rogue' national park Twitter account wasn't so rogue after all, emails show Though tweets containing important information about climate change were deleted from the Badlands Twitter account on Jan. 24., they clearly made a powerful impact on followers discouraged by the Trump administration's anti-climate change beliefs and the temporary social media gag order placed on The Interior Department. Badlands National Park's deleted tweets.Image: twitterIn response to Badlands' Twitter activity from Jan. 20 to 23, heartfelt letters and doodles were sent, assuring the Badlands social media director and employees of the park that their heroic, uncensored acts of resistance and efforts to properly educate using scientific facts did not go unnoticed. Here are just a few of the many grateful messages, selected from more than 800 included in the documents: Image: INTERIOR DEPARTMENT Image: INTERIOR DEPARTMENT Image: INTERIOR DEPARTMENT Image: INTERIOR DEPARTMENT Image: INTERIOR DEPARTMENT Image: INTERIOR DEPARTMENT Image: INTERIOR DEPARTMENT Image: INTERIOR DEPARTMENT Image: INTERIOR DEPARTMENT Image: INTERIOR DEPARTMENT Image: INTERIOR DEPARTMENT Image: INTERIOR DEPARTMENT Image: INTERIOR DEPARTMENT Image: INTERIOR DEPARTMENT Image: Interior departmentAccording to the documents, the story isn't quite as heroic as the email and letter writers believed. A former seasonal employee at Badlands National Park was responsible for sending the climate change tweets, the records show. Once the outside access to the park's Twitter account became apparent to the park's employees, they deleted the emails, and eventually provided a report to the National Archives about the incident. The archives is responsible for storing government social media content. This case differs from the Twitter account of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which also tweeted climate change facts right after the inauguration. In that case, the tweets were authorized based on Park Service guidelines in place at the time. Science Editor Andrew Freedman contributed reporting. Egypt's Christian minority in somber mood for Easter holiday Posted: 15 Apr 2017 01:07 PM PDT By Osama Naguib ALEXANDRIA, Egypt (Reuters) - Members of Egypt's Christian minority flocked to traditional services this Easter weekend in somber mood following attacks last Sunday that killed 45 people, and security was especially tight at the two churches hit by the bombers. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks on Palm Sunday targeting Egypt's nearly 2,000-year-old Coptic Christian community and has warned of more attacks to come. The militants are waging an insurgency against security forces in Egypt's Sinai peninsula. |
US probe of Russian election interference expands into Cyprus Posted: 14 Apr 2017 06:30 PM PDT A lawmaker probing Russian efforts to influence last year's US presidential election said Friday he had traveled to Cyprus to investigate money laundering operations there that could have been utilized by the Kremlin. The Mediterranean country is where Russia is suspected of laundering millions of dollars as part of the election interference campaign. "It is essential for the Intelligence Committee to examine the nature and scope of Russian money laundering and how the use of offshore accounts, like those used in Cyprus, is one of many tools the Kremlin utilizes to exert undue influence abroad," Quigley said in a statement released following his return to the United States. |

How to keep your Easter egg decorating on trend this year Posted: 14 Apr 2017 02:00 AM PDT Did you know that fashion can also apply to hollowed-out eggs? If you're looking to move beyond the standard solid-color dye job this Easter, consider incorporating current #trends into your egg decorating plans. SEE ALSO: People are taping tiny succulents to their fingernails because the internet is weird Is this at all necessary? No. Is it extremely fun? Yes. Is it a waste of craft supplies? We'll leave that one up to you. Behold: 1. The millennial pink egg Image: Mashable/Lili SamsNo matter which shade you think is the real deal, millennial pink is the color that just won't go away. So embrace it by dyeing your egg a rose quartz, or a muted coral, or the color of rosé, or the color of the Glossier logo. Wait, has millennial pink just become all light pinks that aren't bright? Does anyone know? Hello? 2. The unicorn egg Image: Mashable/Lili SamsUnicorn cakes and unicorn macarons are a thing now, and so are unicorn eggs. All you need to make your own: a horn (ours is the sharp end of a dowel colored in with silver Sharpie), ears cut from felt and a marker to draw on eyes. The best part about making this egg is that it looks cool, but requires almost zero skills. 3. The ruffle egg Image: Mashable/Lili SamsRuffled shirts and sleeves are all over the place right now, so why not glue a nice ruffle to your egg and let it flap around in the breeze? We've added googly eyes here for an extra bit of questionable anthropomorphism. For best results, wear a ruffled shirt of your own so you and your egg(s) can match. Best friends! 4. The Coachella egg Image: Mashable/Lili SamsCoachella is on the horizon, so make sure your egg is prepared. You'll need to make your own flower crown: the flower crowns at Urban Outfitters are, like, $20, and they are also not the right size for an egg. Sunglasses optional. 5. The Brussels sprout egg Image: Mashable/Lili SamsAccording to Harry Styles, brussels sprouts are the new kale, and we have no choice but to believe him. Brussels sprouts also look like fun little pompoms, which are also trendy. The natural conclusion here is to glue a bunch of Brussels sprout pieces to an Easter egg. Everyone will ask questions about this egg: "Why did you do that" and "Shouldn't you put those vegetables in the fridge," for example. This means you have done a good job. 6. The "no-makeup look" egg Image: Mashable/Lili SamsIs this egg wearing mascara? You'll never know for sure, but, wow, so dewy. If this egg is the egg you choose to make, be sure to select a moisturizer with SPF. Happy Easter! Enjoy your fashion eggs. Hackers release files indicating NSA monitored global bank transfers Posted: 14 Apr 2017 03:30 PM PDT Hackers released documents and files on Friday that cybersecurity experts said indicated the U.S. National Security Agency had accessed the SWIFT interbank messaging system, allowing it to monitor money flows among some Middle Eastern and Latin American banks. The release included computer code that could be adapted by criminals to break into SWIFT servers and monitor messaging activity, said Shane Shook, a cyber security consultant who has helped banks investigate breaches of their SWIFT systems. The documents and files were released by a group calling themselves The Shadow Brokers. |
Egypt Copts mark solemn Good Friday Posted: 14 Apr 2017 06:31 AM PDT Egyptian Copts observed a solemn Good Friday with prayers and fasting, as the community reeled from two church bombings that killed dozens on Palm Sunday. The government had declared a state of emergency and called in the army to protect "vital" installations following last week's suicide bombings claimed by the Islamic State group. On Friday, Copts attended churches across the country to commemorate the day they believe Jesus Christ was crucified. |

Ecuador to partially recount presidential vote after challenge Posted: 14 Apr 2017 05:24 AM PDT Ecuador's electoral council late Thursday night approved a partial recount of votes in the recent disputed presidential election, in a bid to highlight what it says was a fair process after the losing conservative candidate said there was fraud. The April 2 election was won by the government's socialist candidate Lenin Moreno in a close contest, rebutting a tide of market-friendly governments that have recently come to power in South America. The recount of the equivalent of 1.2 million votes, which would account for 12 percent of the total votes cast, will take place on Tuesday in public in the capital Quito. |
Apple gets permit to test self-driving cars Posted: 14 Apr 2017 12:02 PM PDT Apple has joined the list of companies with permits to test self-driving cars in California, according to an updated roster released on Friday by state officials. Late last year, Apple revealed it is investing heavily in autonomous vehicles in a letter asking the government to make it easier to develop self-driving cars. Apple issued the letter because it is "investing heavily in machine learning and autonomous systems," an Apple spokesman said in an email to AFP at the time. |

Hacked files suggest NSA penetrated SWIFT, Mideast banks Posted: 14 Apr 2017 03:17 PM PDT Files released by the mysterious hacker Shadow Brokers suggested Friday the US National Security Agency had penetrated the SWIFT banking network and monitored a number of Middle East banks. The files, according to computer security analysts, also showed the NSA had found and exploited numerous vulnerabilities in a range of Microsoft Windows products widely used on computers around the world. Analysts generally accepted the files, which show someone exploiting so-called "zero-day" or hitherto unknown vulnerabilities in common software and hardware, came from the NSA. |
'A few dozen' US troops deployed to Somalia: Pentagon Posted: 15 Apr 2017 09:33 AM PDT The United States is deploying "a few dozen" troops to Somalia to assist the national army and conduct unspecified security operations, a US military spokeswoman said Saturday. The soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division, a light infantry unit trained for air assaults, will mainly train and equip Somalia's army "to better fight Al-Shabab," an Al-Qaeda linked extremist group, the spokeswoman for the US Africa Command based in Germany, Samantha Reho, told AFP. |

Starbucks could be jumping onto the unicorn train with a new drink Posted: 14 Apr 2017 09:07 AM PDT Don't know if you've heard, but unicorn things are a thing right now. A huge major thing. But even if you haven't been paying attention, it turns out Starbucks has. Evidence has surfaced online that Starbucks is planning to release a limited-time drink to their menu called the Unicorn Frappuccino. And it might be topped with glitter like in this picture. SEE ALSO: How to keep your Easter egg decorating on trend this year If you don't believe in Unicorns, it's ok, cause the #unicornfrappuccino is coming to a #Starbucks near you. Launching 4/14. A post shared by Hiro Allen-Pope (@super_hiro_pope) on Apr 11, 2017 at 12:45pm PDT This discovery comes to us via Reddit, where user hellabummed posted this picture to the Starbucks subreddit. A conversation ensued in the comments on the post about what the recipe to this supposed unicorn frappuccino might be. "We just guessed white mocha cream based frapp, mango inside and the new pink powder we got," hellabummed said. "Recipe cards don't come out until the April 14. You're not supposed to open the powders until the April 17 because of their very short shelf life," Redditor StormtheParade replied. Pictures of these powders were also posted on Reddit, which only gives us more proof that this unicorn frappuccino may be an actual thing. If the discussion within these posts on the Starbucks subreddit can be trusted, the unicorn frappuccino will be hitting the menu on April 19. Recipe cards were given to baristas on April 14, and the powders should not be opened until April 17 because they have a short shelf life. As for what they may taste like, Redditor hellabummed said it "tastes just like those tropical Skittles." When we reached out to Starbucks for comment, a Starbucks spokesperson told us, "We're still working our Frappuccino magic and don't have any details to share at this time." There's just a few days until April 19, so we'll find out soon if that "magic" has anything to do with blue "unicorn dust." WATCH: This mug solves the worst thing about coffee |
French presidential race tightens further as vote looms Posted: 14 Apr 2017 11:46 AM PDT By Sudip Kar-Gupta and Sarah White PARIS (Reuters) - France's presidential race looked tighter than it has all year on Friday, nine days before voting begins, as two polls put the four frontrunners within reach of a two-person run-off vote. The latest voter surveys may raise investor concerns about the outside possibility of a second round that pits the far-right candidate Marine Le Pen against hard-left challenger Jean-Luc Melenchon. The election is one of the most unpredictable in modern French history, as a groundswell of anti-establishment feeling and frustration at France's economic malaise has seen a growing number of voters turn their backs on the mainstream parties. |
