U.S. must face lawsuit over beauty school student loans Posted: 12 May 2016 12:03 PM PDT A U.S. appeals court in New York revived a lawsuit seeking to stop the government from collecting on loans made to students of a nationwide beauty school chain, since it knew the now-defunct company routinely falsified student eligibility for those loans. Thursday's 3-0 decision by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York may make it easier for struggling borrowers to press the U.S. Department of Education to discharge federally guaranteed student loans that should never have been made. It is a victory for thousands of borrowers who said Wilfred American Educational Corp victimized them into obtaining loans to attend its roughly 60 for-profit trade schools, popularly known as the Wilfred Academy. |
6 Ways Student Loan Payments Are Making Our Lives Worse Posted: 12 May 2016 09:23 AM PDT The high cost of student loans is continuing to affect Americans' life choices, to the point that many people say they would have selected a cheaper way of getting a college education if they had it to do over. More than eight in 10 American adults with student loans say they have made personal or financial sacrifices because of the loans, according to a new study by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Half of those surveyed said that they delayed retirement account contributions in order to make student loan payments, and 46 percent said they'd take a second job to help with the debt. |
McDonald's worker has a message for those who think he's wasting his life Posted: 12 May 2016 08:47 AM PDT LONDON — Do you ever go into McDonald's and wonder about the person behind the counter beyond stressing over whether they've put ketchup in your bag or taken the gherkins out of your burger? Well one McDonald's worker, Mike Waite, has had enough of everyone's "judgmental criticism." He's taken to Facebook to say that there's more to people who work at the fast food chain than "can I take your order." SEE ALSO: You can now tour Harry Potter's childhood home in London Waite, who works in Edinburgh, Scotland, makes it very clear in his post that after spending nearly 50 hours working at McDonald's every week, he understands what it's really like to work for the company. He explains why he does the job and why others like him are currently working for the restaurant: "Why? Not because I have no aspiration, motivation or intelligence... but for the opposite... because in a few months time like a great number of people I work with I will be going back into higher education." Image: Mike Waite/facebook Waite who continuously praises the company for being flexible and providing staff with opportunities for growth, ends the post by asking people to rethink their preconceptions. "I work with some amazing people," he says. |
