US boyfriend of 'Russian agent' Butina charged with fraud Posted: 06 Feb 2019 07:03 PM PST An American who was dating jailed alleged Russian agent Maria Butina was charged with fraud Tuesday, adding a new twist in the sprawling investigations into Moscow's meddling in US politics. Republican and National Rifle Association operative Paul Erickson was charged with one count of fraud for cheating investors in companies he controlled that purported to be running assisted living facilities and building homes in North Dakota. In all three cases, he took hundreds of thousands of dollars from investors and used some of it for his personal needs, the indictment said. |

Tusk's Brexit ‘Hell’ Moment a Touch Provocative, Ireland Says Posted: 07 Feb 2019 07:57 AM PST U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday reiterated that the changes she's seeking to the so-called Irish backstop withdrawal agreement must be legally binding for U.K. lawmakers to approve a deal. The prime minister also said she told Tusk his comments were "unhelpful'' and had caused "dismay'' in the U.K. Tusk's comments captured the "frustration" on the EU side, Coveney said in a Bloomberg Television interview. |

Posted: 06 Feb 2019 11:31 AM PST A Fox Business Network presenter blamed the fact schools have being teaching children "fairness" after the organisation's own polling showed there was overwhelming support for higher taxes on multi-millionaires. Democratic senator Elizabeth Warren has proposed a "wealth tax" for those earning more than $50m and has won support from both Democrats and Republicans. In response to the poll, Charles Payne, host of Fox Business Network's Making Money with Charles Payne, said: "The idea of fairness has been promoted in our schools for a long time. |
Elizabeth Warren called herself 'American Indian' on ID card: report Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:32 PM PST The disclosure marks the latest twist in a controversy surrounding Warren and her claims to Native American ancestry as she raises money and hires staff ahead of an expected formal launch to her 2020 campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. The yellow registration card, which is dated April 1986, was filled out in blue ink and signed by Warren, the Post reported. On a line listed for race Warren wrote "American Indian." The Post reported that Warren apologized during an interview for identifying herself as a Native American. |
Twitter profit soars as user base shrinks Posted: 06 Feb 2019 04:40 PM PST Twitter said Thursday profits rose sharply in the fourth quarter, lifted by gains in advertising despite a drop in its global user base. Twitter said it would stop using the monthly user base metric and instead report "monetizable" daily active users in the US and worldwide. Using that measure, Twitter showed a base of 126 million worldwide, up nine percent over the year. |

May Heads to Brussels Seeking Escape From Brexit Backstop ‘Trap’ Posted: 06 Feb 2019 09:00 PM PST The U.K. prime minister wants the EU to change the most contentious part of the divorce deal -- the Irish border backstop. EU officials said they are braced for a tense set of talks between her, European Union President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker that are unlikely to bear much fruit. |

Death toll rises to six at South Africa coal mine gas explosion Posted: 07 Feb 2019 07:04 AM PST The representative of the creditor protection team at the mine, Michael Elliot, said more than 20 people were still stuck underground at the mine in Middelburg and are presumed dead. Rescue efforts were hampered by dangerously high levels of toxic gas underground, Elliot said. The mine is owned by Tegeta Resources and Exploration, which is undergoing creditor protection after its owners, the Gupta brothers, found it difficult to continue doing business in South Africa following corruption allegations against them. |
The Law Will Be on Trump’s Side If He Declares an Emergency to Fund His Wall Posted: 07 Feb 2019 03:30 AM PST It seems increasingly likely that President Trump will declare a national emergency at our southern border in order to access funds to build a wall. Last week, I had the pleasure of debating National Review's very own David French on the legality of such a move in a Federalist Society-sponsored tele-conference. David and I agree that Congress has not placed any serious limits on the president's power to declare an emergency and that the Supreme Court was unlikely to second-guess him. |
Twitter hammered as user losses overshadow improving finances Posted: 07 Feb 2019 01:50 PM PST Twitter shares took a pounding Thursday as an unsettling update on its global user base offset upbeat figures on revenues and profits in the past quarter. Shares skidded 9.8 percent to close at $30.80 following Twitter's fourth quarter update, which showed a consistent profit trend despite a shrinking number of users. Chief executive Jack Dorsey said the results reflect Twitter's efforts at "promoting healthy conversation" by weeding out fraudulent accounts used for abuse, harassment and political influence campaigns. |

Virginia Democrats in crisis over new blackface scandal Posted: 06 Feb 2019 10:31 AM PST A political crisis deepened in Virginia on Wednesday after the attorney general of the eastern US state admitted he wore blackface to a 1980 college party to impersonate a rapper. Attorney general Mark Herring is second in line for the governorship of the state, where the Democratic governor and lieutenant governor are already embroiled in scandal. Virginia Governor Ralph Northam has been facing calls for his resignation since a 1984 yearbook surfaced last week that features a racist photo on a page dedicated to him. |

Nathan Sutherland, 36, wearing an orange jumpsuit and shackled at the wrists and legs, entered his plea during a brief arraignment at the Maricopa County Superior Court. Sutherland, a licensed practical nurse who began working at Hacienda HealthCare Skilled Nursing Facility in Phoenix in 2012, has been charged with one count each of sexual assault and abuse of a vulnerable adult. |
Brexit Deadlock Continues as EU Rebuffs Theresa May’s Demands Posted: 07 Feb 2019 04:01 PM PST U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May and her top lawyer will travel to Dublin on Friday as she races to forge a breakthrough with European leaders resisting changes to their Brexit plan. Following a day of tense talks in Brussels on Thursday, May plans to dine with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar on Friday evening, while her attorney general, Geoffrey Cox, will meet his counterpart, Seamus Woulfe, in the morning to discuss the contentious issue of the Irish border. On Thursday, May and senior EU officials set a new deadline in an attempt to break the impasse that threatens to push the U.K. crashing out of the bloc next month without an agreement. |

"I'm not a racist," Neeson said on ABC News, while admitting he had felt a "primal urge to lash out" about 40 years ago after hearing from his close friend that she had been attacked by a black man. "I went out deliberately into black areas in the city, looking to be set upon so that I could unleash physical violence," Neeson recalled. |

Democrats float 'Green New Deal' to end fossil fuel era Posted: 07 Feb 2019 12:38 PM PST The document, unveiled by rising political star Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Edward Markey, marks the first formal attempt by lawmakers to define potential legislation to create big government-led investments in clean energy and infrastructure to transition the U.S. economy away from fossil fuels. The plan, which takes the form of a non-binding congressional resolution, outlines some of the most aggressive climate goals ever put forward by Democratic lawmakers and clashes dramatically with the Trump administration's efforts to advance domestic oil, gas and coal production by rolling back environmental protections. The name, Green New Deal, references the New Deal of the 1930s that President Franklin Roosevelt implemented to aid Americans suffering in the Great Depression by embarking on huge government-led infrastructure projects. |

Monsanto versus farmer battle goes into 4th judicial round Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:17 PM PST A 12-year-old judicial battle pitting a cereal farmer against Monsanto, the biotech giant, goes to a fourth round Wednesday before the French courts. Farmer Paul Francois won his initial case in 2012, and its appeal by Monsanto in 2015, after suing the US firm for poisoning him through inhalation of its Lasso weedkiller. Now, after a technical review by the final court of appeal, the case gets bounced back to appeal level after a ruling by the higher court that the case should be decided not so much on whether Monsanto provided adequate information about its product, but on whether its chemicals were dangerous, according to Francois Lafforgue, one of the farmer's lawyers. |
Posted: 07 Feb 2019 08:03 AM PST Venezuela's military have barricaded a bridge at a key border crossing with Colombia in a challenge to a US-backed effort by the opposition to bring humanitarian aid into the beleaguered nation. Nicolas Maduro's regime blocked the Tienditas International Bridge with a giant orange tanker, two large blue containers and makeshift fencing. Despite widespread hunger and a shortage of medicine, President Maduro vowed to turn back US aid after Trump's administration recognised opposition leader Juan Guaido as the South American country's rightful interim leader. |

Work urgently with me on Brexit: Britain's May appeals to EU Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:40 PM PST Just weeks after parliament resoundingly rejected her Brexit deal, May needs to persuade a reluctant EU to change the Withdrawal Agreement to help her get lawmakers' approval before Britain is due to leave the EU on March 29. If she cannot, Britain, and May, face an uncertain future, opening the door to several scenarios - leaving without a deal which some businesses say might cripple the economy, another referendum, an early election or never leaving the EU at all. |
