The US Department of Education has taken another step to push college campuses to reduce sexual assaults and other crimes such as dating violence and stalking. It announced rules Thursday to implement the 2013 Campus SaVE Act, which updates the Jeanne Clery Act – a law to promote safer campuses. Some of the key changes bring the Clery Act into alignment with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's definition of rape, add categories of crimes that need to be reported annually, strengthen protections for victims, and put more onus on campuses to conduct awareness training and prevention campaigns. "It shows that student voices are being taken seriously," says Tracey Vitchers[CQ], communications coordinator for SAFER (Students Active For Ending Rape), based in New York.

A man tries out an e-cigarette at the Vapor Shark store on September 6, 2013 in Miami, FloridaUS senators ripped at electronic cigarette makers for their aggressive marketing campaigns to lure youths that have drawn parallels to those once used by Big Tobacco. "While major e-cigarette companies reiterate that they only target adults, a large youth audience still appears to be getting their message pretty loudly and pretty clearly," said Democratic Senator John Rockefeller. The increased alarm comes with greater usage of the devices, with the percentage of middle and high school students who used e-cigarettes more than doubling between 2011 and 2012, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That means an audience of about 24 million kids is targeted by companies selling vaporized nicotine products.
