Jordan, 30, from West Yarmouth, Massachusetts, allegedly knifed an unidentified man and woman early Saturday morning in an isolated stretch of the 2,190-mile hiking trail that runs through Wythe County, Virginia. The man died and the woman was seriously wounded.The U.S. attorney's office for the Western District of Virginia called it a "senseless and brutal attack" but did not provide any other details. A criminal complaint will be filed Monday as Jordan makes his initial court appearance.He faces one count of murder within the special maritime territorial jurisdiction of the United States and one count of assault with the intent to murder within the special maritime territorial jurisdiction of the United States. Jordan has allegedly been menacing people on the trail, which is in the midst of its high season, for weeks."He was well-known," said Brian King, a spokesman for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, which manages the trail through 14 states with two federal agencies. "The trail has always had a fantastic grapevine."Larry Smith, a hiker from Charleston, South Carolina, told The Daily Beast that he ran into Jordan at a trail shelter in Atkins, Virginia, in early April. Smith said he'd gone to bed after feasting on hamburgers and beer with fellow hikers but awoke to someone entering the shelter and starting a fire at about 10 p.m."He was ranting, and raving," Smith said. After disappearing upstairs for a moment, Smith added, the man returned, and said, "I'm gonna burn this shelter down." When Smith asked if he was alright, the man jumped up on a table, threw his cigarette in Smith's face, and challenged him to a fight. Smith said when retreated to the parking lot to call 911, the man followed, then disappeared into the frigid night."At that time, I thought he was just another hiker who'd gotten drunk, or one of the locals who'd gotten a little drunk," he added. But when another trail blogger posted Jordan's mug shot a few weeks later, he realized that he "looked just like the guy" who had threatened to burn down the shelter. On April 21, Unicoi County, Tennessee, Sheriff Mike Hensley raised the alarm about the erratic figure nicknamed Sovereign, writing that he "ran hikers out of shelters with a shovel" and "brandished a knife and machete and stated it was going to be a bad day for hikers."Several days later, Jordan was arrested after an altercation with hikers on the Tennessee/North Carolina border; police found he was carrying a knife with a 20-inch blade. He reportedly pleaded guilty to several charges, was sentenced to a fine, and was then released."When he was arrested a few weeks ago, the hikers did the right thing—they called 911 and went to the sheriff and got him arrested," King said. "The problem is when you are thru-hiking, you are on a timetable, and they couldn't or wouldn't go in to testify, and that's why he went through the system so fast."The Washington Post reported Jordan apparently resurfaced in Virginia and went after a group of four hikers camped out for the night. They fled, but the knife-wielding attacker caught up to two of them and began slashing away.The woman "pretended to be dead and when [Jordan] walked away after his dog, she took off running," Wythe County Sheriff Keith Dunagan told the newspaper. She managed to walk six miles and get help.Deputies in Bland County, Virginia, began looking for the assailant, Sheriff Thomas Roseberry II told The Daily Beast. But it was deputies in Wythe County, reportedly following an SOS signal activated by the male victim before he died, who found Jordan and the knife."I'm very appreciative that they acted as quick as they did, and apprehended him as quickly as they did, and that no one else was hurt," Roseberry said.The Appalachian Trail runs from Georgia to Maine, and an estimated 2 million people hike at least part of it each year. At the moment, many thru-hikers—who try to go from end to end in one trip—would have been passing through the area where the murder took place."Everybody is sad and sick to their stomach," King said. Lawyers handling claims against the US aerospace company said the longer the passengers and crew were aware of their desperate fate, the larger the likely payout. "There's a better chance of (financial) recovery if it took minutes rather than seconds for the plane to crash,'' Joe Power, a personal-injury lawyer representing some Ethiopian victims, told Bloomberg this weekend. The first passenger plane, Lion Air Flight 610, ditched into the Java Sea 12 minutes after taking off from Jakarta, Indonesia on October 29th last year. Six months later on March 10th, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed six minutes after take off from Addis Ababa. In both cases, the jets were Max 8 models and in both cases, all aboard died. Experts say the Boeing Company could be facing payouts in excess of $1 billion (£770 million) if it can be proved that it had knowledge that the model had safety flaws. Thirty individual law suits have now been filed against Boeing on behalf of families with many more expected. The European Commission looked at Google's Search, Android, and online ads practices and found that Google abused its position in the market.Separately, Russian regulators investigated the same alleged Android abuse, which resulted in a different fine, albeit not comparable to the EU's. In each case, Google had to make several concessions regarding Android. And now India appears to be Google's next nightmare when it comes to antitrust investigations.Google has allegedly abused its dominant position in the market to block rivals, two sources familiar with India's antitrust watchdog's actions told Reuters. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) is the local regulator that started looking at a complaint against Google last year. The CCI determined in mid-April that the complaint had merit, ordering its investigation unit to launch a full probe into the matter."It is a strong case for the CCI, given the EU precedent," a source said. "The CCI has (preliminarily) found Google abused its dominant position."The EU hit Google with a €4.34 billion ($5 billion) fine in the Android case. Google said it'd fight the ruling, but at the same time decided to modify Android in Europe to give users more choice when it comes to internet browsing apps and default search engines. The EU found that Google's contracts with Android vendors forced them to install Google Search and Chrome browsers on devices, alongside Google Play.The CCI's investigation could take about a year, and Google execs might be summoned before the Commission in the coming months, Reuters reports. Indian regulators could impose fines of up to 10% of the relevant turnover of Google's last three financial years. However, it's unclear how much money Google makes from Chrome and Search in the region.Google meanwhile said via a spokesman that the company is working with the CCI "to demonstrate how Android has led to more competition and innovation, not less." He said that Android had enabled millions of Indians to connect to the internet by making mobile devices more affordable.

| The Google Play Store is nagging some users to get rid of old apps Posted: 12 May 2019 11:08 AM PDT  There have been a handful of updates to the Google Play Store's operation that garnered headlines in recent days, such as the news that apps' rating calculations will start being more heavily weighted toward the most recent user ratings. Meanwhile, some users have started seeing something new from the Play Store -- a notification gently reminding them to remove apps they may have downloaded years ago and long since stopped using.The folks at Android Police note that the reminder is reminiscent of the Play Store's uninstall manager from back in 2016. The way this new reminder shows up is as a notification in the store's notification section, which you can then tap to see a list of apps that haven't gotten used for a while. Decide which ones you want to axe, and then you can also see how much space it's freed up.It doesn't appear to be a notification that's showing up across the board yet, which makes sense especially if you don't download many apps and don't, you know, need this reminder in the first place.This news comes, as we said, at a time of change for the Play Store, with Google confirming at I/O in recent days that the change to app ratings will manifest itself come August."Many of you told us that you want a rating that reflects a more current version of your app, not what it was years ago -- and we agree," Google Play project lead Kobi Glick explained in a company blog post. "So instead of a lifetime cumulative value, your Google Play Store rating will be recalculated to give more weight to your most recent ratings. Users won't see the updated rating in the Google Play Store until August, but you can preview your new rating in the Google Play Console today."Meanwhile, as we reported here, Google also in recent days booted one of the biggest app developers from the Play Store (and removed their apps) after a BuzzFeed analysis found that several of them may have been sharing data they collect with the Chinese government.

| Rouhani calls for unity to face 'unprecedented' US pressure Posted: 12 May 2019 04:54 AM PDT  Iranian president Hassan Rouhani has warned of a wave of coming economic hardships worse than in the 1980s as "unprecedented" pressure from international sanctions brings the country to its knees. "During the war we did not have a problem with our banks, oil sales or imports and exports, and there were only sanctions on arms purchases," Mr Rouhani said. "But I do not despair and have great hope for the future and believe that we can move past these difficult conditions provided that we are united," he said. The leader's comments, made to activists in Tehran, come as US-Iran relations, frosty since President Donald Trump pulled out the nuclear deal a year ago, hit a new low. Last week, the US deployed forces including an aircraft carrier and B-52 bombers to counter what it says is a rising threat from Iran to US forces there. The presence of USS Abraham Lincoln, replacing a carrier rotated out last month, has been seen as a clear provocation by Iran's security establishment. "An aircraft carrier that has at least 40 to 50 planes on it and 6,000 forces gathered within it was a serious threat for us in the past but now... the threats have switched to opportunities," said Amirali Hajizadeh, head of the Iranian Guards' aerospace division. "If (the Americans) make a move we will hit them in the head," he said. In a parliament session on Sunday, the commander of the Guards accused the US of starting a "psychological war" in the region. The regional sabre-rattling is picking up pace, with an Israeli cabinet minister on Sunday warning that Israel may be in the line of Iranian fire if the standoff escalates. "Things are heating up," Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz said of the Gulf. "If there's some sort of conflagration between Iran and the United States, between Iran and its neighbours, I'm not ruling out that they will activate Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad from Gaza, or even that they will try to fire missiles from Iran at the State of Israel," he told Israel's Ynet TV. Both Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad are Iranian-sponsored militant groups active on Israel's borders. Back in Tehran, Mr Rouhani's warning of hard times to come appears designed to rally support for his embattled government, which has been criticised by hardliners since Mr Trump pulled out of the nuclear deal a year ago. Despite the increasingly loud voices of hawkish members of his administration including national security advisor John Bolton, who led the military expansion into the Gulf, Mr Trump, at least, appears open to discussion. "What I'd like to see with Iran, I'd like to see them call me," he said.
