Trump to speak with Xi, Abe as North Korea, steel issues loom Posted: 02 Jul 2017 12:03 AM PDT U.S. President Donald Trump will speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Sunday, calls that come as frustration builds in the White House over North Korea's nuclear program and overcapacity in the steel market. The talks come ahead of meetings he will hold with both leaders on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, on July 7-8 where trade practices are expected to be high on the agenda. Trump, who pledged a hard line on trade during his campaign for office, has been weighing new quotas or tariffs on steel imports for national security reasons and plans to discuss his concerns at the G20. |

Tanker and freighter collide off Britain Posted: 01 Jul 2017 07:58 AM PDT A tanker and a cargo ship collided off Britain on Saturday on one of the world's busiest shipping routes, but no injuries or spills were reported, authorities said. The tanker had 38,000 tonnes of petrol onboard when it collided at around 0100 GMT with a 220-metre (720-foot) cargo vessel in the Strait of Dover, which is where the North Sea and the Channel meet. "Although both vessels have been damaged, there is no water ingress and no pollution," Britain's maritime and coastguard agency said. |

U.S., Philippines hold naval patrol to deter Islamist militants Posted: 30 Jun 2017 10:51 PM PDT The United States and Philippine navies held a joint naval patrol on Saturday in dangerous southern Philippine waters, amid rising international concern about Islamist militancy and piracy in the region. US Navy littoral combat ship USS Coronado joined a Philippine Navy frigate, BRP Alcaraz, in patrolling the Sulu Sea where numerous pirate attacks on commercial shipping have been made since 2015. "Our at-sea operations with the Philippine Navy demonstrate our commitment to the alliance and deter piracy and illegal activities," US Rear Admiral Don Gabrielson said in a statement issued by the US embassy in Manila. |

Drone kills two Qaeda suspects in Yemen Posted: 02 Jul 2017 08:29 AM PDT A drone strike likely to have been carried out by the United States killed two suspected Al-Qaeda members in southern Yemen, a security official said on Sunday. One of the suspects was identified as Ibrahim al-Adani, who was said to have run Al-Qaeda's finances in the region. The United States considers the Yemen-based Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP, to be the group's most dangerous branch and has conducted a long-running drone war against its leaders. |
Congo declares Ebola outbreak over after four deaths Posted: 01 Jul 2017 01:59 AM PDT Democratic Republic of Congo declared its two-month Ebola outbreak officially over on Saturday after 42 days without recording a new case of the disease. The outbreak in Congo's remote northeastern forests, a record eighth for the country where the disease was first discovered in 1976, killed four out of the eight people infected, Health Minister Oly Ilunga said in a statement. "I declare on this day, at midnight, the end of the outbreak of the hemorrhagic fever of the Ebola virus in DRC," Ilunga said. |

Central America hit by massive power outages Posted: 01 Jul 2017 08:19 PM PDT San José (AFP) - A huge power outage plunged millions of people across Central America into darkness Saturday, as authorities from Panama to Costa Rica to El Salvador scrambled to restore electrical service. The blackout affected some five million people in Costa Rica alone, where officials largely had managed to restore service after a nationwide power outage lasting about five hours. Authorities pinned blame for the power outages on a downed Panamanian transmission line that adversely affected the power supply for much of the region. |

Rebels accuse Syrian army of chlorine attack, army calls it fabrication Posted: 01 Jul 2017 12:31 PM PDT A Syrian rebel group accused the Syrian army of using chlorine gas against its fighters on Saturday in battles east of Damascus - an accusation the military swiftly denied as a fabrication. The United States said on Wednesday the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad appeared so far to have heeded a warning issued earlier in the week not to carry out a chemical weapons attack after saying it saw possible preparations for one. Western governments including the United States say the Syrian government was behind an April gas attack in the town of Khan Sheikhoun that killed dozens. |
Chicago schools make partial payment to teachers' pensions Posted: 30 Jun 2017 05:41 PM PDT The cash-strapped Chicago Public Schools (CPS) said it sent $464 million to its teachers' pension fund by Friday's fiscal year-end deadline, leaving an additional $250 million payment to be made in the fall. Unlike other Illinois school districts, which are part of a state-wide teachers retirement system subsidized with state dollars, CPS has its own pension fund. "Only CPS has to take hundreds of millions of dollars out of the classroom for teacher pensions, but despite the unfairness of this law, CPS is meeting its obligation to our teachers' pensions today," CPS CEO Forrest Claypool said in a statement. |
US planning to create 'Space Corps' as sixth branch of armed forces Posted: 01 Jul 2017 05:58 AM PDT The House Armed Services Committee has voted to create a US "Space Corps", which would become a new branch of the armed forces and incorporate the current space missions of the US Air Force. If the US Space Corps goes ahead, it would be the first new military service in the country since 1947. The move has caused consternation as committee members of the panel say they were only recently informed, giving them little time to protest against the proposal. |
Californians take a shine to solar power Posted: 01 Jul 2017 06:57 PM PDT Jacquie Barnbrook had grown tired of the high electricity bills and her gas-guzzling luxury car when she finally decided to take the plunge last year. The 52-year-old Los Angeles resident joined an ever-growing number of Californians who are switching to solar power for their energy needs in a bid to not only save money but to also do their part for the environment in a state setting the pace for the rest of the country in that sector. Nearly 4.9 million homes are powered by solar energy in California -- the nation's green trailblazer and the most populous state -- and that number is expected to continue to grow, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association, a non-profit trade association. |

Russia bus crash 'kills 14' Posted: 02 Jul 2017 06:08 AM PDT Fourteen people died, two of them children, when a long-haul passenger bus collided with a truck in Russia on Sunday, the authorities said. The bus was travelling from Samara on the Volga river to Izhevsk, around 900 kilometres (550 miles) east of Moscow, when the accident happened, according to the Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes. The bus rolled over and caught on fire as a result of the collision, the regional interior ministry said, adding that it would be arresting both drivers. |
Defiant Kashmiri militant denounces U.S. terrorist designation Posted: 01 Jul 2017 05:34 AM PDT By Abu Arqam Naqash MUZAFFARABAD, Pakistan (Reuters) - A Kashmiri militant commander on Saturday denounced his designation as a terrorist by the United States, vowing to continue his armed fight against Indian rule over its part of the divided Himalayan territory. Syed Salahuddin called the decision by U.S. President Donald Trump's administration "idiotic", saying it was a gift to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was visiting Washington on Monday, the day Salahuddin was declared a Specially Designated Global Terrorist. "They cannot quote a single incident to prove that we are terrorists," Salahuddin told a news conference in Muzaffarabad, the capital of the Pakistani portion of Kashmir, where he has been based for some 25 years as leader of the Hizbul Mujahideen, the largest of the anti-Indian Kashmiri militant groups. |

Glamorous pet owners are getting matching manicures with their cats Posted: 01 Jul 2017 07:33 AM PDT First thing's first: you should never, ever paint your pet's claws with actual nail polish. It's toxic to them! But should you hunger for you and your cat to have matching manicures, there's a glamorous alternative. Cristi, a cat owner from California, routinely purchases nail caps for her cat, Wednesday. One day, she found a purple, glittery set — the same purple glitter as her own manicure. SEE ALSO: Cats have been getting humans to do their bidding for 9,000 years Hell yeah. Bffs pic.twitter.com/aa7eCQbxVX — cristi cupcake (@cristimari_) June 24, 2017 As it turns out, Cristi wasn't the only one to have this idea. After another user shared her image, it went viral, and other pet owners started sharing manicure pics, too. the only way to be pic.twitter.com/6n49uyyee3 — POI$ON IV¥ (@jadejumps) June 25, 2017 I've done this with my ruby ♥️✨ pic.twitter.com/JSTqvHSSm2 — Melanie (@reverseoceans) June 25, 2017 pic.twitter.com/SEHjPJQejV — J (@rockmanticsoul) June 24, 2017 And for those sneering right now, we'd like to point out that, from a logical standpoint, this makes perfect sense. Friends get matching manicures all the time. Pets are the best friends ever. Therefore, it would stand to reason that humans and their pets should have matching manicures. Checkmate. "The international agreement for the development of phase 11 of South Pars will be signed on Monday in the presence of the oil ministry and managers of Total, the Chinese company CNPC and Iranian company Petropars," a ministry spokesman told AFP. Total signed a preliminary deal with Iran in November as the lead partner alongside China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and Iran's Petropars. |

What Is the Difference Between Key Limes and Conventional Limes? Posted: 01 Jul 2017 07:00 AM PDT Well, in the case of "regular" limes vs. Key limes, the truth is, not a ton. Of course there's more separating the two than meets the eye, but the differences are fairly minute and, indeed, the two can often be used interchangeably in recipes without risk of total disaster. Key limes are smaller than the standard Persian limes and have thin, leathery skin. |
Germany produced record 35 percent of power from renewables in first half Posted: 02 Jul 2017 04:48 AM PDT Germany raised the proportion of its power produced by renewable energy to 35 percent in the first half of 2017 from 33 percent the previous year, according to the BEE renewable energy association. Germany is aiming to phase out its nuclear power plants by 2022. Its renewable energy has been rising steadily over the last two decades thanks in part to the Renewable Energy Act (EEG) which was reformed this year to cut renewable energy costs for consumers. |
US warship sails close to S. China Sea island occupied by Beijing Posted: 02 Jul 2017 10:41 AM PDT An American warship on Sunday sailed close to a disputed island in the South China Sea occupied by Beijing, a US official said, a provocative move that could further strain relations between the superpowers. The USS Stethem destroyer passed less than 12 nautical miles (22 kilometers) from tiny Triton Island in the Paracel Islands archipelago, which is also claimed by Taiwan and Vietnam, the official told AFP. The operation, meant to demonstrate freedom of navigation in disputed waters, came just hours before a previously scheduled phone call between President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. |
