Clinton’s $350 Billion College Tuition Plan Built on Rosy Assumptions Posted: 10 Aug 2015 01:03 PM PDT Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton on Monday formally unveiled a $350 billion, ten- year proposal for addressing onerous college debt in a scheduled speech in New Hampshire, as she wades into a pocket-book topic of utmost concern to all middle class families. With college tuition and room and board costs running well above inflation, student debt has tripled over the past decade, reaching $1.2 trillion in the first quarter of 2015. Clinton, the Democratic presidential front-runner and policy wonk, has crafted ideas for directly addressing the plight of students at state and city run public universities and colleges, and their families who are drowning in debt, as well as cracking down on lending institutions engaging in unscrupulous practices. |

The announcement came as CPS released its $5.7 billion 2016 budget, which includes a historic $1.1 billion budget deficit driven by rapidly rising pension payments. The layoff notices will affect 479 teachers and 1,012 other staff members out of more than 41,500 employees, according to the school system. |

Why Schools Need More Teachers of Color—for White Students Posted: 06 Aug 2015 05:30 AM PDT Noah Caruso, 17, calls South Philadelphia home. Known for cheesesteaks, pizza, and bakeries, South Philly is a close-knit, largely Italian American neighborhood where much of the population has traditionally shared the same background, culture, and race. Though an influx of immigrants has made the area more diverse in recent decades, South Philly, like the rest of the city, remains highly segregated. Caruso's predominantly white community was echoed at his middle school, Christopher Columbus Charter School, where he says all of his teachers were white like him, as were virtually all of his classmates. It was against this backdrop that Caruso enrolled in Science Leadership Academy (SLA)—a public magnet high school in the city—and landed in the freshman English class of Matthew Kay, his first black teacher. |
