Macron hails French resistance spirit of heroic gendarme who swapped himself for hostage Posted: 28 Mar 2018 04:16 AM PDT President Emmanuel Macron led a national ceremony on Wednesday morning paying tribute to a heroic policeman who died after swapping with a female hostage during a jihadist attack. Lieutenant-Colonel Arnaud Beltrame, 44, was was killed along with three others in the shooting spree last Friday in the southwestern towns of Carcassonne and nearby Trebes. "His greatness has stunned France," Mr Macron told family members, hundreds of dignitaries and "brothers in arms" at a solemn ceremony at Paris' Invalides near Napoleon's tomb. "The intolerable can never win the day," said the president. His act was the epitome of France's "spirit of resistance" against Islamist barbarity, he added. Mr Beltrame who had been part of an elite unit, had taken the place of a female employee held as a final hostage in a supermarket by 25-year-old gunman Radouane Lakdim, who pledged allegiance to Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. The president placed France's highest award on Lt Col Beltrame's coffin draped in the French flag with his military cap laid upon it. France has lost more than 240 lives to jihadists over the past three years, but this attack was the country's worst since Mr Macron became president last May. Earlier, police stations paused for a minute's silence. The pair attacked "an innocent and vulnerable woman because she was Jewish and who thus profaned our sacred values and our memory," said Mr Macron. Marine Le Pen and Jean-Luc Mélenchon say they will attend regardless, while the victim's son said it was wrong to ban people. Mr Macron's government has meanwhile come under fire from Right-wing opponents who claim that the attack could have been prevented. He said "ultimately no one thought that there would be a hasty attack" by Lakdim, a Moroccan-born French resident with dual nationality. How could they know he would act hours after taking a child to school, he asked. Prime Minister Edouard Philippe hit back at the criticism on Tuesday, telling parliament: "Those who say ignorantly that this attack could have been avoided, those who promise people zero risk - I say to them, these people bear a heavy responsibility in speaking so casually." |

Rick Santorum tries to correct his 'CPR' gaffe by digging an even deeper hole Posted: 28 Mar 2018 11:38 AM PDT Sentient mayonnaise blob Rick Santorum was back on CNN on Wednesday trying to walk back some controversial comments he made about the Parkland shooting survivor teens and still somehow wound up doubling down on his original comments. Santorum faced backlash after, over the weekend, he said students taking part in the March For Our Lives would be better off "maybe taking CPR classes or trying to deal with situations that when there is a violent shooter that you can actually respond to that." Speaking to CNN's Chris Cuomo on Wednesday, Santorum said, "I did misspeak in using the term CPR." But that was the extent to which Santorum made any sense. Here is more from Santorum's line of thinking: Right, okay, Rick, you just described the organizations behind March For Our Lives, so I'm not sure I see where you're going. Or like March For Our Lives? But go on. You mean the huge rallies across the country in support of bringing an end to gun violence are avoiding the issue of gun violence in schools and not unifying? Rick. Your sweater vest is too tight. After Cuomo called out Santorum and his ilk for "going after these kids, who are survivors, in the interest of political expediency," Santorum tried to wriggle free from everything he had previously said through several minutes of sparring with Cuomo. But he stood by his point that there were better ways for the students to help prevent school violence. Like take CPR, I guess? Posted: 27 Mar 2018 12:52 PM PDT Rare displays of public anger were directed at Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday following a fire over the weekend that killed dozens of children in a Siberian shopping centre. The outpouring of emotion since Sunday's inferno has been stoked by revelations about breaches of safety regulations, including locked fire exits and a faulty alarm system. Russian media have reported that 41 of the 64 dead were children. Two employees of the Zimnaya Vishnya shopping centre in Kemerovo appeared in court to face charges of negligence and compromising security systems on Tuesday afternoon. Nadezhda Suddenok, the manager of the shopping centre, and Alexander Nikitin, the employee responsible for the building's fire fighting and alarm systems, appeared at a hearing in the Siberian city's Zavodsky District Court on Tuesday afternoon. Russian President Vladimir Putin listens to locals and relatives of the victims Credit: Alexei Druzhinin They are among five people who have been detained in connection with failings that led to the tragedy, Alexander Batrykin, the head of the Russian Investigative Committee, said. In comments carried on national television, Mr Bastrykin told Mr Putin on Tuesday that the building's fire alarm system had been out of order since March 19 and that a guard had not turned on the public address system to tell people to evacuated. Earlier in the day Mr Putin made an attempt to respond to the outrage by visiting some of the victims and the site of the burnt-out shopping centre in the city of Kemerovo. He vowed to punish those guilty of what he said was "criminal negligence." "This isn't war, it's not an unexpected methane explosion at a coal mine. People came to relax, children. We're talking about demography and losing so many people," Mr Putin said in a televised meeting with local officials. Relatives held up pictures of children who had perished in the fire Credit: TASS/Barcroft Images "The first emotion when hearing about the number of dead and dead children is not to cry but to wail. And when you listen to what has been said here, speaking honestly, other emotions arise." Official pictures of Mr Putin's highly-choreographed visit contrasted with the raw anger on display at an impromptu rally in the city centre where people carried photographs, in black frames, of children who were killed in the fire. There were placards asking: "How many really died?", "Who's really guilty?" and "How much do your closed eyes cost?" At least one sign demanded that Putin and local officials resign, and chants of "resign, resign, resign" were heard from the crowd. Many of those present said they believed the number of victims to be much higher than officially acknowledged. The authorities appeared to do everything they could to try and minimize the impact of the furious crowds. At one point hundreds of riot police were deployed to stop people from storming a local government building. Thousands turned out for the impromptu protests Credit: Sergei Gavrilenko/ AP While Putin's visit was reported in detail by state-owned television, there was little coverage of protests. Aman Tuleev, the governor of Kemerovo Region, told the Russian president in a televised meeting that those demonstrating were "speculating on the grief of strangers." Several Russian cities held rallies of mourning on Tuesday evening as anger and grief swept the country. In Moscow, several thousand people gathered in silence to lay flowers and light candles at an improvised memorial on Pushkin Square, not far from the Kremlin. A chant of "Fire Putin" was briefly taken up by some members of the meeting, but petered out. |

Canada teen scores lottery win of $1,000, every week, for life Posted: 28 Mar 2018 04:20 PM PDT Turning 18 is the moment when most teenagers begin to wonder how they will pay their way in the world, but for one lucky Canadian woman, paying the bills will never be a problem. Charlie Lagarde never dreamed she'd strike lucky when she hit the legal age to buy a lottery ticket in Canada by spending C$4 on a winning scratch card. The Quebec teenager wound up winning a lifetime of weekly payments of $1000. Ms Lagarde was given the choice of receiving either C$1m (£550,000) in one go or in weekly installments of $1000 - meaning should could be paid up to $4m if she reaches the average Canada life expectancy for a woman of 83. After consulting with a financial adviser, Ms Lagarde opted for weekly payments so as to avoid tax. Patrice Lavoie, a spokesman for the lottery corporation, told the Canadian Press: "It's without taxes so it's equivalent to a salary of more than $100,000 a year, so it's a great start in life for that young lady." "That was her first lottery ticket ever and she fell upon a winning ticket." Ms Lagarde claimed her prize on Monday at the lottery corporation's head office in Montreal, surrounded by friends and family. She said she wants to use the money to travel and her studies. "I want to study photography. One of my dreams would be to work for National Geographic," she told the lottery officials. |
