Condoleezza Rice Bails on Rutgers Commencement After Protests Posted: 03 May 2014 11:46 AM PDT Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice backed out of a planned address at Rutgers University's commencement ceremony following a week in which student protestors staged sits-in. Rice was scheduled to receive $35,000 for her speech and also snag a coveted Doctor of Letters from the New Jersey institution. As a Professor for thirty years at Stanford University and as it's former Provost and Chief academic officer, I understand and embrace the purpose of the commencement ceremony and I am simply unwilling to detract from it in any way. |

Arizona high school student accused of up to 18 sex attacks Posted: 03 May 2014 02:38 AM PDT An Arizona high school student has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting up to 18 girls and threatening to kill victims and witnesses, the Pinal County Sheriff's office said. Tyler Kost, 18, was being held without bond after being arrested on Thursday, suspected of assaults on high school students between early 2011 and last month, the sheriff's office said. One of the alleged victims was 13 years old, it said. "Tyler Kost was a predator who threatened, harassed, stalked and then either forcibly sexually abused or sexually assaulted his victims," Sheriff Paul Babeu said in a statement. |
55 colleges with Title IX sexual violence cases pending: Is yours listed? Posted: 01 May 2014 12:58 PM PDT As part of its campaign to reduce sexual violence on college campuses, the US Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) published a first-of-its kind list Thursday of all higher education institutions currently under investigation for possibly violating civil rights law in how they've handled complaints of sexual violence and harassment. |
Florida Is the Latest State to Grant In-State Tuition for Undocumented Immigrants Posted: 01 May 2014 12:24 PM PDT Florida looks set to become the latest state to allow "Dreamers" — young undocumented immigrants brought here by their parents — access to in-state college tuition, a move that will help the state's conservative legislature attract the ever-important Hispanic vote. The decision comes two days after Mark Herring, Virginia's attorney general, said in-state tuition should be extended to Dreamers. As Lizette Alvarez reports in The New York Times, Florida will become the 20th state to "offer some kind of in-state tuition" to children brought to the United States illegally as children, and therefore don't have lawful status in the country. The bill is expected to pass the state Senate on Thursday, a remarkable feat considering Gov. Rick Scott's "Arizona-style crackdown" on illegal immigration in 2010, and his veto of a driver's license bill for Dreamers last year. It has taken a decade for the bill to pass in Florida, largely because of arguments like the one made by state Sen. Jeff Brandes: "A Purple Heart-receiving combat veteran could be bumped for an undocumented student." |
Teachers Plus Louis CK Plus Common Core Equals Anger Posted: 01 May 2014 11:14 AM PDT The Tea Party is still leading the charge against the federal government's Common Core educational standards, but the cause is suddenly getting support from some teachers and some (famous) parents. "I had students tell me they felt like they were failures. I had students cry during the exam," Prospect Heights International High School English teacher Emily Wendlake told the New York Post. Teachers at the school are refusing to administer the standard's English test to their students, since many of the students aren't native English speakers. In a press release, the teachers said that "50% of parents have opted their children out of the test" and that "this test serves no purpose for the students, and ultimately only hurts them." That complaint is shared by Tea Partiers, who see the new standards as a one-size fits all approach to education. |
Heartbreaking video shows students as ferry sinks Posted: 01 May 2014 09:40 AM PDT Soon after the ferry begins to tilt, nervous laughter can be heard from the high school students huddled below deck. In video clips from the cellphone of a victim of a disaster that has shaken South Korea, the teenagers talk of taking selfies, wonder if they'll make the news and discuss posting about the excitement later on Facebook. |

Here Are the 55 Colleges Being Investigated for Allegedly Mishandling Rape Cases Posted: 01 May 2014 08:55 AM PDT Just two days after the White House released its recommendations to curb sexual assault on college campuses, the Department of Education released the names of 55 colleges and universities currently under investigation for possible Title IX violations regarding sexual assault. An investigation doesn't necessarily indicate wrongdoing, obviously, but this list is important for the sake of transparency. Both Harvard University and Harvard Law School are currently being investigated. |
New York teachers get retroactive pay deal with city: report Posted: 01 May 2014 08:39 AM PDT New York Mayor Bill de Blasio could announce a deal as early as Thursday to settle a years-old labor dispute with city teachers who have been seeking retroactive pay worth up to $3.5 billion, according to a report in the New York Times. The report, which cites 'an official involved in the talks', said the 9-year contract will include retroactive pay of about 8 percent of wages going back to 2009 and raises of up to two percent in subsequent years, as well as healthcare savings for the city. |

State college tuition skyrocketed during recession, study finds Posted: 01 May 2014 06:58 AM PDT But all but two states – Alaska and North Dakota – still spend less per student than they did before the recession. With both college tuition and student loans skyrocketing in recent years, much attention has gone to those state funding levels – a major reason behind the spiraling cost of attending college, at least for public institutions. "In many states the cuts have been extraordinarily deep," said Michael Mitchell, an author of the report, in a call with reporters. "Over the last 25 years, nearly every state has shifted higher education costs from the state to students – this has been a trend for some time. |

Korea ferry disaster exposes cozy industry ties, soft penalties Posted: 29 Apr 2014 11:56 PM PDT By Jack Kim and Ju-min Park SEOUL (Reuters) - A culture of cozy personal ties that can blur the lines between businesses and those regulating them, of profit over safety, and soft courts is in focus as South Korea demands answers over the sinking of a ferry with the loss of more than 300 lives, mainly high school students. Prosecutors are investigating two shipping trade organizations responsible for vessel safety checks and for certifying ships that operate in domestic waters. Two officials at the Korea Shipping Association (KSA) have been arrested on charges of obstructing justice for destroying documents related to a probe into lobbying government officials. Prosecutors are also investigating Korean Register (KR), which tests and certifies ships. |
10 Best Cities for Today’s College Graduates Posted: 29 Apr 2014 06:15 PM PDT The unemployment rate for the class of 2013, after all, is at 10.9 percent – far above the national average. Still, that's the lowest unemployment rate for new college graduates since 2007, when the rate was at 7.7 percent. With the job market improving for this group of Americans, especially in certain parts of the country, where should these new grads go? A new study by NerdWallet examined criteria in each major U.S. city – such as the job market, average income, affordability and percentage of young people – all crucial to this cohort, and came up with the 10 places most appealing to new college graduates. |

The Surprising Reasons America's High School Graduation Rates Have Skyrocketed Posted: 29 Apr 2014 02:03 PM PDT One of Barack Obama's goals when he ran for president in 2008 was for more American students to graduate from high school. New reports by the National Center for Education Statistics and America's Promise Alliance show that the high school graduation rate is rising. 81 percent of all high school students graduated in 2012, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. That is the highest graduation rate in history. |
Teargas fired on protesting teachers, students in Nigeria Posted: 29 Apr 2014 10:54 AM PDT Nigerian police fired teargas at teachers and students and shot live rounds into the air as they tried to disperse a rally over college closures on Tuesday, protesters said. The march, in the capital Abuja, was called by two academic unions who have been on strike for several months, but protesting teachers were also joined by a number of students. The organisers of the rally, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) and the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), have been demanding facility improvements at a range of technical colleges across the country. The march, which the unions said involved about 100 people, began at Abuja's Eagle Square -- which is often the site of political rallies -- before moving towards the parliament, where organisers had planned to formally present their grievances to lawmakers. |
