States consider requiring US citizenship test for graduation Posted: 16 Jan 2015 03:11 PM PST PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona's new law requiring high school students to pass the U.S. citizenship test in order to graduate appears likely to be adopted in a handful of other states this year, though educators warn it's not a fix-all solution to the nation's dire knowledge of civics. |
Will John Boehner regret use of Taylor Swift GIFs? Posted: 16 Jan 2015 02:13 PM PST Representative Boehner – or, let's be honest, some younger Boehner staffers who know more what's up with the kiddies – compiled a bunch of Swiftian clips, Buzzfeed-style, to illustrate what they consider the overreach of Obama's promotion of "free" community college tuition. This could turn out to be like New Jersey's GOP Gov. Chris Christie getting all excited at Bruce Springsteen concerts, and then getting snubbed by his idol. |
What to Expect Out of an Online Graduate Program in Criminal Justice Posted: 16 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST If shows like "Homeland" and "NCIS" make your heart flutter, it's possible an advanced criminal justice degree might be a good fit. Criminal justice is one of the most popular degrees among online graduate students, according to a 2014 study by Aslanian Market Research and the Learning House, a company that helps colleges and universities develop and deliver online degree programs. Just like brick-and-mortar students, they will be required to read, watch videos, complete assignments and even take quizzes every week, says Mary Ellen Mastrorilli, faculty coordinator of the online master's in criminal justice program at Boston University, which tied for the No. 2 spot in the U.S. News rankings. |
Obama's Free Community College Plan: What Students Need to Know Posted: 16 Jan 2015 05:30 AM PST President Barack Obama's proposal for free community college tuition is either a game changer or an empty promise. The president's plan, dubbed America's College Promise, would cover students' tuition for qualifying community college programs, so long as students maintain a 2.5 GPA. This is an important difference, says Evelyn Waiwaiole, director of the Center for Community College Student Engagement at the University of Texas--Austin. "The average age at a community college is 28. |
Arizona first-in-nation law mandates students pass civic test Posted: 15 Jan 2015 07:28 PM PST By David Schwartz PHOENIX (Reuters) - Arizona's high school students will be required to pass the same civics test that immigrants must pass to gain citizenship, under a first-in-the-nation bill signed into law on Thursday. Arizona Republican Governor Doug Ducey, who had championed the idea in his state-of-the-state address on Monday, signed the measure only hours after it sailed through the state House and Senate on Thursday. |
