Witnesses: Residents prevented much worse attack in Egypt Posted: 31 Dec 2017 11:06 AM PST CAIRO (AP) — Witnesses to an attack outside a Coptic Christian church in Egypt that left nine people dead said it was residents and worshippers, not police, who kept the death toll from soaring even higher. One man in particular — a 53-year-old resident who pounced on the gunman as he was reloading his automatic rifle — likely saved dozens of lives. |

In address, Merkel promises more work on social divisions Posted: 31 Dec 2017 07:22 AM PST By Andrea Shalal BERLIN (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel, under mounting pressure after three months of failing to form a new conservative-led coalition, vowed on Sunday to address growing social divisions. "And Germany will only prosper if its success serves all people and improves and enriches our lives." Merkel, seeking a fourth term in office, is trying to persuade the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) to extend the "grand coalition" that has ruled for the past four years, even though both blocs suffered big losses in September's election. Party leaders will meet on Jan. 3, with exploratory talks scheduled from Jan. 7 to 12. |

Three big US cities saw homicides decline last year Posted: 01 Jan 2018 12:26 PM PST New York, Chicago and Washington all experienced significant declines in homicides in 2017, though the murder rate rose in Baltimore, Maryland amid drug problems and lingering racial tensions. The homicide decline was dramatic in New York, which experienced 2,245 killings as recently as 1990 but just 286 in 2017 as of December 27, according to the New York Times. Chicago, which in 2016 suffered through its deadliest year in two decades with 754 killings, saw its murder total drop last year to 650, the largest year-to-year decline since 2004, the Chicago Tribune reported. |

Posted: 30 Dec 2017 11:45 PM PST Two people are understood to have been killed after Iranian security forces reportedly opened fire on anti-government demonstrators on Saturday as the largest protests seen in the country since 2009 continued for a third day. Reports of the two deaths were were posted on social media. There was no official confirmation of the fatalities but the posted images appeared to show several bodies being carried away after clashes with police in the western city in Dorud Angry protests escalated in cities across Iran as demonstrators tore down posters of Ayatollah Khamenei, the Islamic Republic's supreme leader, while police on motorbikes charged into crowds swinging batons. Protesters reportedly stormed the governor's compound in the western city of Arak and started fires at government offices in Ahvaz, a city in the country's southwest. People protest in Iran's capital Tehran Credit: Reuters Donald Trump, the US president, warned Iran's government that the "world is watching" its response to the demonstrators. He accused authorities of "squandering of the nation's wealth to fund terrorism abroad". Later, he posted two clips of his speech to the UN General Assembly in September in which he took aim at Iran, which Washington has held out as its top adversary in the Middle East. "Oppressive regimes cannot endure forever, and the day will come when the Iranian people will face a choice," he tweeted, quoting from the speech. The Iranian government shot back at Mr Trump, calling his comments "deceitful" and "opportunistic". مخاطبان بیبیسی فارسی این تصاویر را از "خیابان طالقانی #ابهر" فرستادهاند. گروهی از مردم در این ویدیو بیلبورد با عکس آقای #خامنهای را به زیر میکشند pic.twitter.com/q5RejFwYV2— BBC Persian (@bbcpersian) December 30, 2017 The demonstrations began on Thursday in the northeastern city of Mashhad, largely over the rising cost of living, but quickly spread around the country and became more explicitly critical of Ayatollah Khamenei and of Hassan Rouhani, Iran's president. While the security forces showed relative restrain during the first 48 hours of protests, their response hardened on Saturday and authorities reportedly cut off some internet access in Tehran to try to stop the spread of unrest. Several dozen students at the University of Tehran protested at the campus gates yesterday and chanted "death to the dictator" in apparent reference to Ayatollah Khamenei. Security forces fired tear gas and made arrests and the protesters were eventually replaced by a larger crowd of pro-government students who chanted "death to the seditionists" as they took back control of the gates. Thousands of people also turned out for annual pro-government rallies to mark the defeat of the last major protest movement in 2009. Mr Trump said in a tweet that the "Iranian government should respect their people's rights, including right to express themselves. The world is watching!" It was not clear what impact his intervention would have. Mr Trump's decision to focus worldwide attention on the protests may discourage the Iranian government from using violence. But the protesters may also be sullied by association with Mr Trump, who is widely unpopular in Iran. The protests are a wildcard in the complicated political balance between Mr Rouhani, a relative moderate who was re-elected this year as president, and his more hardline political rivals. Mr Rouhani has not yet addressed the protests Credit: Vahid Salemi/AP Mr Rouhani has made no public comment since demonstrations began on Thursday. Some analysts said he might try to turn the demonstrations to his advantage by promising a more aggressive campaign against corruption in response to the demands from people on the streets. "The country is facing serious challenges with unemployment, high prices, corruption, lack of water, social gap, unbalanced distribution of budget," said Hesamoddin Ashena, his cultural advisor. "People have the right for their voice to be heard." One of the popular chants has "No Gaza No Lebanon, My Life for Iran", an expression of frustration money being spent on Iran's foreign interventions around the Middle East instead of on domestic programmes. |

Exclusive: Pakistan plans takeover of charities run by Islamist figure U.S. has targeted Posted: 01 Jan 2018 09:16 AM PST By Asif Shahzad ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan's government plans to seize control of charities and financial assets linked to Islamist leader Hafiz Saeed, who Washington has designated a terrorist, according to officials and documents reviewed by Reuters. Pakistan's civilian government detailed its plans in a secret order to various provincial and federal government departments on Dec. 19, three officials who attended one of several high-level meeting discussing the crackdown told Reuters. Marked "secret", a Dec. 19 document from the finance ministry directed law enforcement and governments in Pakistan's five provinces to submit an action plan by Dec. 28 for a "takeover" of Saeed's two charities, Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) and the Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation. The United States has labeled JuD and FIF "terrorist fronts" for Lashkar-e-Taiba ("Army of the Pure" or LeT), a group Saeed founded in 1987 and which Washington and India blame for the 2008 attacks in Mumbai that killed 166 people. |
Quarter of land will be drier under 2 C warming: study Posted: 01 Jan 2018 10:28 AM PST More than a quarter of Earth's land surface will become "significantly" drier even if humanity manages to limit global warming to two degrees Celsius, the goal espoused in the Paris Agreement, scientists said on Monday. At 1.5 C, parts of southern Europe, southern Africa, central America, coastal Australia and Southeast Asia -- areas home to more than a fifth of humanity -- "would avoid significant aridification" predicted under 2 C, said study co-author Su-Jong Jeong of the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, China. "Accomplishing 1.5 C would be a meaningful action for reducing the likelihood of aridification and related impacts," he told AFP. |
