San Francisco skies turn orange as wildfires return to Northern CaliforniaSan Francisco took on a post-apocalyptic shade of orange, after smoke from Northern Californian wildfires reached the city on Sunday. Just under a year since the deadliest firestorms in state history, intense wildfire has returned to the region, fanned by high winds and hot temperatures. SEE ALSO: Flames once again return to California's wine country Smoke and ash from fires burning in the Yolo and Lake counties filled the sky about 75 miles south in the San Francisco Bay Area on Sunday morning, giving the city a foreboding orange filter. On Sunday morning, the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management tweeted a warning for city residents, announcing the air quality in the city had changed to "moderate," and that older adults, children, or people with heart or lung disease "should consider reducing prolonged/heavy exertion." Fury sparked after 11-year-old Thai girl married to Malaysian man

Fury sparked after 11-year-old Thai girl married to Malaysian manThe marriage of a Malaysian man with a 11-year-old Thai girl has sparked outrage in the Muslim majority country with one activist Sunday labelling the groom a "child predator". Malaysian Muslims below the age of 16 are allowed to marry if they obtain the permission of a religious court. But the country's women and families ministry said there was no record of religious authorities approving the union, which took place last month across the border in Thailand's largely Muslim far south. "Our officers have gone to the house and met the girl's mother. We are waiting for more reports before deciding on the next course of action," deputy prime minister Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was quoted as saying by the Sunday Star newspaper. The 41-year-old husband could be jailed for six months if he married without permission. Malaysian activists have called for law reform to end child marriage, which they said was widespread among the country's Muslim population. Some 16,000 Malaysian girls below the age of 15 are already married, advocates claim. "Marrying a 11-year-old girl is like the behaviour of a child predator or paedophile," child activist Syed Azmi Alhabshi said.  Mr Alhabshi said the man was a prosperous trader and already married to two women while the girl's parents were impoverished rubber farmers. Muslim men are allowed to marry up to four wives in Malaysia. The United Nations children's agency Unicef said it was "outraged" by the incident. "It is shocking and unacceptable. Unicef... calls on the government to make good its manifesto promise to ban child marriage," said the agency's Malaysia representative Marianne Clark-Hattingh.

North Korea appeals to China for economic help as it reopens radio channel with the South

Posted: 01 Jul 2018 04:29 AM PDT

North Korea appeals to China for economic help as it reopens radio channel with the SouthNorth and South Korea reopened a maritime communication channel on Sunday, with vessels from the two countries making radio contact for the first time in a decade, South Korea's Defence Ministry said in a statement. A North Korean patrol boat responded immediately when the South Korean Navy contacted it via an international radio channel at 9 am Sunday in the western sea, normalizing the maritime communication channel for the first time in 10 years, according to the ministry. The move showed the two Koreas were "taking practical steps" to uphold agreements made on April 27 when their leaders decided to defuse military tensions in a gradual manner, an official from the ministry said. It was also on Sunday reported that Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, has appealed to China's Xi Jinping to help end sanctions against Pyongyang following his landmark summit with US President Donald Trump. Kim made the request during his third meeting with Mr Xi in Beijing last month, and the Chinese president promised to do his "utmost" to satisfy it, the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper said. "We are feeling great pain due to economic sanctions. Now that we have concluded the US-North Korea summit in success, I want (China) to work toward early lifting of the sanctions," Kim reportedly told Mr Xi, according to the newspaper. Kim chose Beijing - his main economic patron and diplomatic protector - for his first official foreign trip in March and met Mr Xi again in May in the northeastern port city of Dalian. Timeline of Kim Jong-un in Beijing In recent months the Cold War-era allies have sought to repair ties strained by Pyongyang's nuclear tests and Beijing's support of subsequent UN sanctions. Kim asked Mr Xi to help ease the sanctions that have crippled North Korea's economy, and urged China to back Pyongyang in its denuclearisation talks with Washington, the report said. Mr Xi in turn told Kim he "actively supports North Korea's reform and opening-up and will proactively cooperate with issues associated with the efforts", according to the Yomiuri. He also urged North Korea to "continue (its) consultations with China" as it negotiates with the United States, the report said.
