Tillerson ends China trip with warm words from President Xi Posted: 18 Mar 2017 11:14 PM PDT By Yeganeh Torbati and Michael Martina BEIJING (Reuters) - With warm words from Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson ended his first trip to Asia since taking office with an agreement to work together with China on North Korea and putting aside trickier issues. China has been irritated at being repeatedly told by Washington to rein in North Korea's nuclear and missile programs and the U.S. decision to base an advanced missile defense system in South Korea. Beijing is also deeply suspicious of U.S. intentions toward self-ruled Taiwan, which China claims as its own, with the Trump administration crafting a big new arms package for the island that is bound to anger China. |

Export bans hit Brazil's meat industry after scandal Posted: 20 Mar 2017 03:01 PM PDT Brasília (AFP) - The fallout from Brazil's rotten meat scandal accelerated Monday when China, a huge market, suspended imports and the European Union demanded a partial ban. Another ban on Brazilian meat imposed by Chile sparked fears of a trade spat between the two South American partners. A charm offensive by President Michel Temer, who even invited foreign ambassadors to a traditional meat restaurant in the capital Brasilia late Sunday, failed to calm importers. |

New Zealand expels US diplomat after police probe stymied Posted: 19 Mar 2017 10:30 PM PDT A US diplomat has been expelled from New Zealand after Washington refused to waive diplomatic immunity so police investigating a serious crime could question him, officials said Monday. Prime Minister Bill English labelled the US knockback on immunity regrettable and said he expected American authorities to carry out their own investigation. Earlier, Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully said he was "disappointed" at the US refusal and in response had asked for the man at the centre of the police investigation to be withdrawn from New Zealand. |

Meals on Wheels receives massive donations following proposed budget cut. Will it matter? Posted: 19 Mar 2017 10:12 AM PDT Following Thursday's White House budget proposal release, Meals on Wheels, a nonprofit organization that delivers food to elderly isolated or disabled citizens received more than $100,000 in donations over a two-day period. The surge in contributions came after last week's release of the White House budget proposal which includes a 17.9 percent cut for in federal funding for the Department of Health and Human Services, which according to Meals on Wheels, provides most of the organization's government support, according to Reuters. Some local branches of Meals on Wheels are also reporting increases in both financial donations and interest in volunteering. |
Choose the Right Contribution Rate for Your 401(k) Posted: 20 Mar 2017 06:24 AM PDT There's really no getting around it -- choosing the optimal 401(k) contribution rate is serious business -- akin to laying the foundation of a new home, or planning a household budget before raising a family. Your 401(k) contribution rate -- the amount deducted from your check every pay period that is redirected toward your company retirement plan, in percentages -- will set the financial tone for your retirement plan growth. Deduct from it and your retirement could wind up in serious peril. |

Peru struggles with devastating El Niño flooding Posted: 20 Mar 2017 06:26 AM PDT Peruvians struggled on Sunday to cope with avalanches, mudslides and extensive flash flooding caused by torrential downpours, and forecasters predicted still more rain ahead, prolonging the country's woes. The highly unusual rains follow a series of storms that have struck hard along Peru's northern coast, with voracious waters inundating hospitals and leaving some small villages isolated. Peru's government said that 374 people were killed in 1998 during a similar period of massive rains and flooding caused by rains blamed on the El Niño climate pattern. |

Macron, Le Pen clash in French TV debate Posted: 20 Mar 2017 03:28 PM PDT By Ingrid Melander and Michel Rose PARIS (Reuters) - The top candidates in France's presidential election clashed in a televised debate on Monday, with centrist Emmanuel Macron accusing far-right leader Marine Le Pen of lying and seeking to divide the French. Opinion polls show Macron and Le Pen pulling away from the pack in an election that has been full of twists and turns, and which is taking place against a backdrop of high unemployment and sluggish growth. One of the most heated exchanges came between the two frontrunners, after Le Pen accused Macron of being in favor of the burkini, a full-body swimsuit worn by Muslim women that created weeks of controversy in France last summer. |

The Dragon capsule -- the only such vessel capable of returning research samples and other material to Earth -- remained docked with the ISS for nearly a month after delivering more than two tonnes of food, water and scientific equipment for NASA on February 23. Before its departure, the crew loaded the cargo ship with old equipment, waste and almost 4,000 pounds of research samples from experiments carried out in the station's condition of microgravity. |

Forty-eight percent said they supported "increasing the deportation of people living in Canada illegally," while 50 percent of Americans support "increasing the deportation of illegal immigrants," according to a US version of the poll conducted the same week. Legal immigration has enjoyed high bipartisan support in Canada for decades. |

Elon Musk’s lab forced bots to create their own language Posted: 19 Mar 2017 06:01 AM PDT Have you ever experienced the dread of overhearing two people, speaking a language you don't understand, begin laughing wildly? You just have to wonder what it is they're talking about, and if it's a joke at your expense. Heck, maybe you even check your teeth to make sure you aren't walking around with half of your lunchtime ham sandwich stuck to your gums. Now, thanks to Elon Musk's OpenAI lab, we're one step closer to experiencing the exact same thing, only with software bots doing the talking.
As Wired reports, researchers at OpenAI have made some huge strides in getting bots to communicate with each other, and without actually telling them how to do so. The group published a research paper earlier this week explaining exactly how they were able to accomplish the complex task, and it's all based on reinforcement learning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liVFy7ZO4OA Reinforcement learning is the same concept that many pet owners use to train their animals, and centers on rewarding correct behaviors. In the case of AI, it means knowing what actions help it in completing a task, and continuing to do them. In OpenAI's experiments, bots were assigned assigned colors, red, green, and blue. Then they were given a task, such as finding their way to a certain point in a flat, two-dimensional world. Without giving the three separate AI a dictionary of commands to help each other, the bots were force to create their own in order to achieve their goal. The bots successfully assigned text characters to represent themselves as well as actions and obstacles in the virtual space, sharing that information with each other until they all understood what was going on. Check out the video above to see the bots in action. |

German Social Democrat Schulz chosen to challenge Merkel Posted: 19 Mar 2017 09:31 AM PDT Martin Schulz on Sunday officially became Chancellor Angela Merkel's chief rival at Germany's September general election, leading the leftwing challenge to unseat arguably the world's most powerful woman. The bearded Social Democrat, already credited with giving his ailing party a strong shot in the arm, was unanimously elected SPD leader and standard bearer at a one-day congress in Berlin. In a speech to the SPD rank and file, the 61-year-old attempted to harness this momentum against Merkel, whose conservatives just a few months ago had an apparently invincible lead in the polls. |

Galaxy S8 leaks: The 10 biggest leaks you missed over the weekend Posted: 20 Mar 2017 06:08 AM PDT With less than 10 days to go before Samsung officially takes the wraps off its new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ flagship smartphones, the dam is officially broken. A steady trickle of leaks and rumors over the past few weeks turned into a massive flood, with more than 15 — that's right, fifteen — big leaks that come from at least a dozen different sources. As exciting as Samsung's next-generation flagship Android phones are, we know you don't have time to dig around the web and find all of those leaks, so we did all of the heavy lifting for you. In this post, you'll find the 10 biggest Galaxy S8 leaks that washed ashore this past weekend. There are photos, pricing information, renders, dummies, and even some size comparisons to enjoy, and you can check them all out below. First and foremost, the only real question we had left has now been answered by not one but two separate leaks. That's right, Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ pricing has now seemingly been revealed. Serial leaker Evan Blass was first up, and he tweeted that the Galaxy S8 will cost 799€ in Europe while the larger Galaxy S8+ will cost 899€. Remember, we're only expecting Samsung to release each of its Galaxy S8 models with one internal storage size option this year — 64GB — and then users can add a microSD card if they want more space. Blass also noted that a new version of the Gear VR headset will cost 129€, and the desktop experience dock we're expecting Samsung to unveil alongside the Galaxy S8 will cost 150€. Backing up Blass is our second big leak of the weekend, which comes from a Weibo user with a very solid track record as well. He posted that the Galaxy S8 and S8+ will cost 5970 yuan and 6700 yuan in South Korea, respectively, which converts to roughly the same prices Blass posted in Euros. With those two out of the way, we turn to a flurry of leaked photos and renders of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Images came in from a wide range of different sources this past weekend, some showing the real phones and others showing dummy units, which are equally interesting since they're exact replicas of Samsung's new flagship phones built using leaked specs from the factories that are building the phones. Let's quickly run through a bunch of them: Blass is back in the #3 spot, since he posted what appear to be official marketing renders of the Galaxy S8 in three different different colors: Black sky, orchid grey and arctic silver. https://twitter.com/evleaks/status/843424632254468096 Renders are nice and all, but there's nothing quite like the real thing. Our fourth big leak comes from another Weibo user, who posted multiple photos of a real Galaxy S8 that is powered on. BGR was one of the first sites to exclusively post photos of an actual Galaxy S8 with the power turned on, and these new photos align perfectly with that leak. The fifth big leak we're covering today comes from Weibo yet again, and it shows a real Galaxy S8 on a table between an iPhone 7 and a Galaxy S7 edge. These photos give us a great idea of just how impressive Samsung's Galaxy S8 design truly is, since it fits a huge 5.8-inch display into a phone that's not much bigger than Apple's iPhone 7, which has a 4.7-inch screen. That covers the first five leaks, and the rest come from either Weibo, Twitter or from crowd-sourced gadget leaking site Slashleaks. Unlike the photos above, these leaks all show Galaxy S8 and/or Galaxy S8+ dummy units. But remember, these mockups are made of real glass and aluminum just like Samsung's actual phones, so they obviously give us a very good idea of what to expect from the real devices. A Weibo user with a handle that roughly translates to "Light Power Technology" posted photos showing that the Galaxy S8+ is roughly the same size as last year's Galaxy S7 edge. Next up is Slashleaks user "Leakspinner," who posted an image of a black Galaxy S8 dummy net to a purple Galaxy S8 dummy. It's unclear if this purple color will actually make it to Samsung's lineup. Over on Twitter, user "KK Sneak Leaks" also offered up a few photos of a Galaxy S8 dummy in purple. https://twitter.com/kksneakleaks/status/843100071012978688 And last but not least we have PCpop, which pulled a few photos off of Weibo that show a Galaxy S8 dummy positioned next to an iPhone 6. Once again, these photos show how compact the S8 is despite its large 5.8-inch Super AMOLED display. Samsung will unveil the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ during a special press conference next Wednesday, March 29th, and the phones are expected to be released about a month later on either April 21st or April 28th. |

Man dies after electrocuting himself by charging his iPhone in the bath Posted: 20 Mar 2017 08:37 AM PDT A man in London, England was electrocuted and pronounced dead in his home after attempting to charge his iPhone while using it in the bath. According to a report from the Daily Mail, Richard Bull's body was first discovered by his wife, who initially assumed he had been attacked based on the severity of the burns.
Police Commissioner Craig Pattison told the Mail that he couldn't rule out suicide when he heard the details of the incident, but after arriving at the scene, police concluded that it was an accident:
As a result of the tragedy, Dr. Sean Cummings -- the coroner -- plans to write a letter to Apple asking the company to attach warnings to its phones. Bringing an electronic device into the bath while it's plugged into an outlet is probably something you would avoid doing, but as unwilling as many of us are to walk away from our phones even for an instant, it's not nearly as surprising as it probably should be that this happened. Don't bring electronic devices with you into the bath. Let's keep hammering that point home. |
