Investigators focus on wreckage in deadly California crash Posted: 11 Apr 2014 02:44 PM PDT By Sharon Bernstein SACRAMENTO, California (Reuters) - A probe into a California crash that killed 10 people focused on Friday on whether the truck driver lost consciousness, his vehicle had mechanical failure or another collision caused him to swerve across a median and slam into a bus full of students. Those killed in Thursday's crash include five high school students, the drivers of both vehicles and a college recruiter on their way to Humboldt State University in Northern California as part of a program to help disadvantaged college hopefuls. The powerful explosion that followed the collision was so loud it was heard throughout the nearby community of Orland, about 90 miles north of Sacramento, said Glenn County Sheriff Larry Jones. "We don't know whether the Fed-Ex driver had fallen asleep, whether he experienced a mechanical failure with his vehicle or whether there was a separate collision on the southbound side that caused him to lose control," said Lieutenant Scott Fredrick, lead investigator for the California Highway Patrol. |
Denver hires teachers who came to U.S. illegally as children Posted: 11 Apr 2014 01:07 PM PDT By Keith Coffman DENVER (Reuters) - The Denver Public School system is allowing immigrants who have resided illegally in the United States since they were children to teach in its classrooms under a relaxed employment policy advanced by the Obama administration, district officials said this week. Superintendent Tom Boasberg said in a statement that Denver schools were the first in the country to hire teachers under a directive signed by President Barack Obama in 2012. Under that directive, the Deferred Action of Childhood Arrivals (DACA), immigrants who came to the United States as children and meet certain other criteria can apply for a work permit for a renewable period of two years. "These teachers often are bi-lingual or multi-lingual and have a deep personal understanding of the challenges that many of our students face who similarly came to this country in undocumented status as young children," Boasberg said. |

Ten dead in road accident in California Posted: 11 Apr 2014 11:38 AM PDT A delivery truck ploughed into a bus carrying American students in northern California, killing ten people and injuring at least 30, the California Highway Patrol said. The bus was one of three bringing high school students to tour Humboldt State University on Thursday, which is about a six-hour drive north of San Francisco. "My understanding is the FedEx truck crossed the highway divide, and it was a head on collision with our bus," Joyce Lopes, a university official, told AFP. On the bus were low-income and first-generation prospective college students, traveling as part of a university-sponsored program to introduce them to the college and other prospective students. |

Minority Students Should Weigh Pros, Cons of Online Education Posted: 11 Apr 2014 06:00 AM PDT As an African-American undergraduate at Tennessee State University, a historically black school, she felt like other students were judging her for her dark skin. There, Jordan was comfortable with her virtual classmates -- and her skin color -- in ways she never was in an on-campus setting. "With an online course, nobody knows who you really are," says Jordan, who works for the Tennessee Board of Regents, the state's higher education system. Jordan, who successfully completed her program in 2011, is one of many minority students taking advantage of the growing number of online offerings in the U.S. |
