Iran accuses United States of breaching nuclear deal Posted: 01 Aug 2017 07:44 AM PDT By Bozorgmehr Sharafedin LONDON (Reuters) - Iran believes new sanctions that the United States has imposed on it breach the nuclear deal it agreed in 2015 and has complained to a body that oversees the pact's implementation, a senior politician said on Tuesday. Under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed by the United States, Russia, China and three European powers, Iran curbed its nuclear work in return for the lifting of most sanctions. The U.S. Senate voted on the same day to impose new sanctions on Iran, Russia and North Korea. |

Posted: 01 Aug 2017 07:09 AM PDT A shooting in a courthouse in a Moscow suburb resulted in three assailants dead and two heavily injured on Tuesday afternoon. Two convoy officers, a man and a woman, also sustained injuries, as did an officer of the National Guard, Russia's newest law enforcement task force. A bailiff stands behind a fence at the main entrance of Moscow Regional Court Credit: Andrey Nikerichev/Moscow News Agency The shooters were alleged members of the so-called "GTA gang" - a reference to the popular video game Grand Theft Auto - a mysterious crime group that used to terrorise drivers heading south on the M4 highway that connects Moscow and Rostov-on-Don. Between 2013 and 2014 the gang was reported to stop cars on the highway by using different methods to damage their tyres, including shooting at the wheels. Gang members would then approach drivers, pretending to offer help but instead robbing and brutally murdering them. In November 2014 the Investigative Committee reported arresting the supposed gang members. In August 2016, a trial of nine of them began in the Moscow Region Court located in a northwestern suburb of the capital. On Tuesday, five of the accused were being transported to the courtroom by two convoy officers, a man and a woman, for another court hearing of the case. In the elevator, it is reported that one of them attacked one of the convoy officers, while the others seized the officers' guns. Once the elevator arrived to the third floor of the courthouse, the accused started shooting at the National Guard officers waiting for them in the hall in an attempt to flee from the courthouse. Both of the convoy officers were injured, as well as one National Guard officer. The other National Guard officers tried to disarm and stop the shooters, killing three of them and heavily injuring two in the process. According to the statement National Guard issued on the heels of the shooting, no one among "civilians" present at the courthouse at the moment was hurt "thanks to the brave and professional actions of the National Guard officers." The prosecutor's office of the Moscow region opened a criminal probe into the accident. Moscow region prosecutor Alexei Zakharov promised to investigate possible violations of the convoy procedure. Perpetrators of the shooting are likely to face additional charges of attempt at murder of a law enforcement officer, stealing firearms and attempt at fleeing custody. The shooting happened at the Moscow Regional Court, around 12 miles from the centre of Moscow |

Nissan attacked for one of 'nastiest anti-union campaigns' in modern US history Posted: 01 Aug 2017 04:00 AM PDT Days before a potentially historic union vote at the Nissan plant in Canton, Mississippi, the car company has been accused of running one of the "nastiest anti-union campaigns in the modern history of the American labour movement". The vote, a fiercely contested effort by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union to represent a foreign automaker's US plant, is planned for Thursday and Friday this week. In the closing days of the campaign, which has attracted support from the former presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders, UAW officials and their allies have become increasingly confident of victory even as managers have pressured workers to vote no. "People are rallying," says Frank Figgers, co-chair of the Mississippi Alliance for Fairness at Nissan. |

Ford’s Mustang is getting a ‘Good Neighbor Mode’ thanks to an engineer’s angry neighbors Posted: 01 Aug 2017 07:33 AM PDT Unless you live in the middle of nowhere, you've likely experienced the unfiltered rage that comes with being disturbed by a particularly loud car or motorcycle passing by your home. It can be incredibly annoying, especially if it jolts you out of an otherwise pleasant slumber, but Ford thinks it has a solution, and it's all thanks to a little incident between a former Ford engineer and his ticked-off neighbors. The 2018 Ford Mustang will come with what is being casually referred to as "Good Neighbor Mode." Activated within the vehicle's dash menu system, the quiet mode seeks to mute much of the rumble of the exhaust pipes in an effort to keep your neighborhood from turning against you. It can be set manually or activated on a set schedule, automatically turning on or off depending on the time of day. Steve von Forester is responsible for the neighborly new feature. He's the former head of vehicle engineering at Ford and now leads the team which designs and tweaks the overall user experience. Von Forester is also a Mustang owner with a V8 Shelby GT350, which had a habit of rustling his neighbors' feathers. After one particularly touchy situation in which one neighbor called 911 to complain about his loud exhaust, Von Forester came up with the idea for the quiet exhaust option. Along with an overall calmer exhaust note, the newest Mustangs will also get a "Quiet Start" option, which will prevent the vehicle from roaring as the driver turns the key. These features should add up to an overall more suburb-friendly sports car, but that's only if Mustang owners actually decide to use them. |
Elephants, tigers kill one human a day in India Posted: 31 Jul 2017 08:13 PM PDT Endangered elephants and tigers are killing one person a day in India as humans put a growing squeeze on their habitat, according to new government figures. India has lost vast swathes of forests to urbanisation in recent decades, forcing animals into human-occupied zones. According to the environment ministry, 1,144 people were killed in attacks across India in 1,143 days between April 2014 and May this year. |
Top Senate Democrat urges Trump to block China deals over North Korea Posted: 01 Aug 2017 10:15 AM PDT The top Democrat in the U.S. Senate called on President Donald Trump on Tuesday to block some Chinese investments in the United States to pressure China "to help rein in North Korea's threatening and destabilizing behavior." In a letter to Trump, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer urged him to use his authority through the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, or CFIUS, to pressure Beijing by suspending approval of "all mergers and acquisitions in the U.S. by Chinese entities." Schumer's request comes amid concern about North Korea, which fired a missile Friday that experts said was capable of hitting Los Angeles. Trump has repeatedly urged China to rein in its ally North Korea, and Schumer agreed. |

Alabama police hunt for inmate after peanut butter jail break Posted: 31 Jul 2017 02:23 PM PDT Walker County Sheriff James Underwood said in a phone call that 11 of the 12 missing prisoners had been recaptured, some at a highway truck stop, but 24-year-old Brady Kilpatrick remained a fugitive. Kilpatrick had been in jail facing charges of marijuana possession. Underwood said the men had managed the escape by using peanut butter to switch lettering on cell and outside doors, then told a guard in a control booth, a new employee with only a week on the job, to open the door leading to their freedom. |

Ancient fidget spinner confirms there's really nothing new under the sun Posted: 01 Aug 2017 01:09 PM PDT Old trends always have a way of popping back up, don't they? Wired editor, Arielle Pardes, left Twitter shook on Monday after posting a very revealing photo of how far we have come as a society. Spoiler: we haven't come that far. SEE ALSO: The Hidden History of Fidget Spinners You know these new wacky gadgets called fidget spinners that have taken over the internet? Apparently, they have been around since roughly 2000-1800 B.C.E., as made evident by this museum display. Proof that there are no original ideas anymore pic.twitter.com/7zPxYha7QQ — Arielle Pardes (@pardesoteric) July 31, 2017 Apparently, in ancient Iraq, they made a "spinning toy with animal heads" out of baked clay. Who knew people in biblical times had trouble focusing? Surely there were less distractions. Though the majority of Twitter found this revelation both hilarious and surprising, a few people pointed out that this ancient fidget spinner resembles more of a spice if anything. Looks like a chunk of ginger to me. — Laurence Pelletier (@laurpelletier) July 31, 2017 Who threw a lump of ginger into the display case? — COLIN ALSTON (@COLINALSTON1) July 31, 2017 Well at least our fidget spinners come in fun colors. See Samsung’s new flip phone powered on for the first time Posted: 31 Jul 2017 12:29 PM PDT Galaxy Note 8 leaks have been dominating the headlines of tech blogs for months now. We've seen renders, cases, release windows and rumored specs sheets, but it's easy to forget that the Note 8 likely won't be the only other phone Samsung releases in the second half of the year. Along with the S8 Active, Samsung is also reportedly working on two smart flip phones, both of which could launch in 2017. We highlighted the Samsung flip phone leaks last month, but over the weekend (via Slashleaks), photos of the SM-G9298 powered up and out in the wild appeared online for the very first time.
At a glance, the SM-G9298 looks relatively advanced for a flip phone. It features a near bezel-less 4.2-inch display on both the outside and the inside of the top flap, both of which look sharp in the leaked images. The phone could almost pass as a miniature Galaxy S8 from the front (if it didn't also flip open). The physical buttons are situated similarly to the buttons on the SM-G1650 we covered in June, though the Home, Back and Recent buttons now surround the control pad while the dedicated buttons for camera and email functionality have vanished altogether. As for specifications, previous leaks suggest that the flip phone will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, 2,300mAh battery, 12-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front camera. Unfortunately, the phone will almost certainly launch in a few Asian markets, including China, so our Western readers will have to stick with non-flippable phones. The good news is that if a final or near-final version of the phone is floating around in the wild, the unveiling should come soon. |

Qatar Airways expected to access contingency routes in August: source Posted: 31 Jul 2017 04:16 PM PDT By Allison Lampert MONTREAL (Reuters) - Qatar Airways is expected to have access to three contingency routes over international waters in early August, after a UN-led meeting on Monday discussed air corridors for Doha following a rift with its neighbors, a source familiar with the matter said. Qatar had asked the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to intervene after its national carrier was denied access to the airspace of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates as part of economic sanctions. The four countries severed ties with Qatar on June 5, accusing it of supporting terrorism, something Doha denies. |
Indonesia says convict organised major drug trafficking ring Posted: 01 Aug 2017 02:38 AM PDT A convict in a maximum-security Indonesian prison masterminded an operation to import 1.2 million ecstasy tablets which led to two arrests and the death of another suspect, authorities said Tuesday. The alleged mastermind -- currently serving a 15-year sentence in the maximum security prison at Nusakambangan -- would also be charged in the new case and could face death if convicted, said national police chief Tito Karnavian. Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati warned that Indonesia has been targeted by major trafficking syndicates who see it as a highly lucrative market. |

Your cable company is robbing you every month, but we’ll tell you how to stop them Posted: 31 Jul 2017 05:30 PM PDT Like millions of other Americans across the country, you're probably paying more for home internet service than you should be. No, we're not simply talking about the inflated monthly fees ISPs charge for actual home internet service, because that's supply and demand. We're talking about the extra $8 to $10 you spend each month on your modem rental fee. You probably don't even realize it. Go look at your bill… it's there. What you might not know, however, is that you can purchase your own compatible modem for next to nothing, and that monthly fee with vanish as soon as you return your leased modem to your cable provider. There are a bunch of good options out there, but we recommend the NETGEAR CM400 (8x4) DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem, which is discounted right now on Amazon and compatible with every major ISP in the US. Here are some key details from the product page:

Climate change is already wreaking havoc on Miami Beach, and Al Gore has the clip to prove it Posted: 01 Aug 2017 08:10 AM PDT Much of the conversation around climate change is focused on what will happen or what could happen, but the truth is that you don't have to peer into the future to witness its dramatic toll. You could, for example, just take a look at what's happening right now in Miami Beach, Florida. SEE ALSO: Al Gore is back in theaters, with a powerful, anti-Trump message on climate change In a new clip from An Inconvenient Sequel, mayor Philip Levine shows Al Gore around the streets of Miami – which are under several inches of water, thanks to rising sea levels. The city's methods for dealing with flooded streets include pumping out the water ("it's not very effective," admits Levine) and raising the roads. But Levine's sensible enough to realize they can only do so much. "It's going to get worse and worse as the tide comes up," he says. And as Gore dryly notes, "It's kind of hard to pump the ocean." An Inconvenient Sequel hit theaters July 28. |

President Xi says China loves peace but won't compromise on sovereignty Posted: 31 Jul 2017 09:13 PM PDT By Philip Wen and Ben Blanchard BEIJING (Reuters) - China loves peace but will never compromise on defending its sovereignty, President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday while marking 90 years since the founding of the People's Liberation Army. China has rattled nerves around Asia and globally with its increasingly assertive stance in territorial disputes in the East and South China Seas and an ambitious military modernization plan. Relations with self-ruled Taiwan have also worsened since Tsai Ing-wen from the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party won presidential elections there last year. |

Trump urged to declare national emergency over US opioid epidemic Posted: 31 Jul 2017 04:59 PM PDT CDC figures show drug overdoses now kill more people than car crashes and gun homicides combined. President Trump is being urged to declare a federal state of emergency to address the epidemic of opioid overdoses that is claiming as many American lives as the terrorist attacks on 9/11 every three weeks. The call for dramatic measures to be taken comes from the commission looking into the opioid crisis that Trump set up by executive order in March. |
Royals and relatives mark centennial of WWI battle of Passchendaele Posted: 31 Jul 2017 10:06 AM PDT By Darren Staples PASSCHENDAELE, Belgium (Reuters) - Relatives read letters and diary excerpts from soldiers who died in the World War One battle of Passchendaele when they gathered on Monday for a ceremony to mark 100 years since the start of one of the war's bloodiest offensives. Politicians and royalty joined relatives of the dead for the centenary of the 103-day battle in western Belgium in which more than half a million Allied and German troops were killed or wounded. The brutal clash, which became a symbol of the horrors of the war, began on July 31, 1917 when Britain launched an assault against German forces who were holding the plateau overlooking the Belgium city of Ypres. |
