| Massive Google Outage Turned Smart Homes Into Zombies Posted: 03 Jun 2019 11:56 AM PDT  Your smart home is only as smart as the network that runs it.On Sunday, some Google users found themselves locked out of YouTube and Gmail as the tech giant experienced major outages across the U.S. But while the service disruption only affected most users' browsing history, others saw their homes malfunction. Nest, a Google-owned smart home company, was also affected by the outage. For Nest users, that meant losing access to smart thermostats, smart baby monitors, and smart front doors.They might seem like a plot device in a heavy-handed sci-fi movie, but smart home glitches are an inevitability as more people invite digital helpers into their homes."Can't use my Nest lock to let guests into my house," a commenter on the tech forum Hacker News wrote on Sunday. "I'm pretty sure their infrastructure is hosted in Google Cloud."The commenter, StanfordKid, had been trying to use Nest to unlock his door for guests while he was away. In theory, the software is safer than leaving the keys under a doormat. Unless Google is down—then the smart home device loses its brain.StanfordKid wasn't the only Nest user locked out of his devices on Sunday. Nest also makes smart smoke detectors, smart camera systems, and smart thermostats, some of which were reported useless during the four-hour outage. (Nest did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)For gaming YouTuber jDantastic, that meant a thermostat that wouldn't work wirelessly because the Nest app was down, he tweeted. (He acknowledged that the inconvenience was relatively minor, as the thermostat had a manual override.) Another Twitter user said he lost access to his baby monitors."It's very inconvenient when the system is down," TheBigWax tweeted at Nest. "Especially if you use Nest Cameras for baby monitors. Is the outage expected to end soon? Sometimes I wish I just got simple baby monitors instead of paying a premium price and a monthly fee for an inconsistent service."But "simple" devices of old are often on their way out, replaced by their always-online counterparts. These web-enabled products form what's known as the "Internet of Things," a network of gadgets connected to the internet, sometimes for almost no discernible purpose. Dubious usefulness aside, these smart products are making moves on their analogue counterparts, sometimes with major Silicon Valley backing.Take the Juicero. A $400 juice machine that raised more than $118 million in funding (including funding from Google Ventures), Juicero promised an unparalleled fruit juice experience by syncing to the internet to perform minor tasks like confirming that its proprietary juice packets hadn't been recalled. The juicer didn't work unless it was connected to the internet, although savvy users soon found a workaround: they could make juice by squeezing Juicero packets with their hands. The company went out of business soon after Bloomberg revealed the manual hack.Undeterred, other companies have tried selling internet-dependent beverage accessories. Ember, a temperature-controlled coffee mug ($99.95-$149.95), needs regular software updates and a smartphone connection.And unlike a $5 coffee mug, glitches sometimes render these homegoods unusable. When Europe adopted new privacy laws, some web-enabled light bulbs announced that, due to their new privacy policy, they would no longer turn on, according to the popular Twitter account "Internet of Shit."Sometimes clunky tech even becomes a human rights issue. In May, elderly residents in a Manhattan apartment building won a settlement in a lawsuit against landlords who installed smartphone-enabled smart locks in the building. Some residents, including a 93-year-old, said they almost never left home after the locks were installed, because they did not own smartphones. Others objected to an 84-page smart lock contract that surrendered all the residents' smart lock data to the landlords."It's a form of harassment," resident Beth McKenzie told the New York Post. "What happens if your phone dies? I don't want to be stuck on the street and I don't want to be surveilled."In extreme cases, the Internet of Things can cause internet outages of its own. The devices, which often have shoddy security, are prime hacking targets. On multiple occasions, hackers have wrangled huge networks of home devices and turned them into botnets capable of breaking the internet.In October 2016, a huge distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack knocked out large sections of the internet on the East Coast. Originally thought to be the work of hostile state hackers, the culprits turned out to be a group of teens. | Apple introduces iPadOS with new UI and much more Posted: 03 Jun 2019 11:06 AM PDT  With WWDC 2019 finally upon us, Apple is at long last ready to reveal all of the software refinements, improvements, and new features it's been working on for the last year. As in previous years, Apple at WWDC will introduce notable updates across the entirety of its software line, including tvOS, watchOS, macOS, and of course, iOS. Apple's WWDC keynote kicked off not too long ago, and we've already seen some intriguing updates regarding tvOS, watchOS, and of course, a number of iOS improvements -- including Dark Mode -- designed to enhance the user experience across the board. Per usual, though, Apple had a few tricks up its sleeve. Just a few moments ago, Apple introduced iPadOS, a completely rethought OS to enhance the entirety of the iPad user experience. The overarching benefits of iPadOS is that it brings the iPad user experience that much closer towards a traditional desktop experience. In short, users with iPadOS will have more control and flexibility than ever before. The homescreen on the iPad with iPadOS looks similar but the alignment of icons is a bit more condensed. If you swipe to the right, you're presented with a view of useful widgets. Some other new features include a column view for Files, iCloud drive folder sharing, USB drive and SD card support, improved text editing, and desktop-class browsing to Safari which includes 30 new keyboard shortcuts and a download manager. To the latter point, browsing the web on mobile Safari on the web will yield a desktop version of a site, not a stripped down mobile version. A look at the homescreen with the widget view open can be seen below. Apple also introduced multi-window support from within applications, > iPad users can now work with multiple files and documents from the same app simultaneously with updates to Split View, or can quickly view and switch between multiple apps in Slide Over. For example, customers can compose an email while viewing another email side by side or access multiple apps like Messages or Calendar with just a swipe. App Exposé provides a quick view of just the open windows for any one app with a simple tap.Regarding the revamped Files app, Apple notes: > The Files app is a central place to quickly access and manage documents, and with iPadOS, it gets even better with iCloud Drive support for folder sharing. Anyone with access to a shared folder will see it in iCloud Drive and will always have the ability to access the latest version. iPadOS also supports external drives, allowing users to easily plug in USB drives, SD cards or log into an SMB file server, all from within the Files app. A new Column View with high-resolution previews helps users navigate directories, while support for Quick Actions such as mark up, rotate and create PDF make it easy to be more productive on iPad. iPadOS also introduces local storage, zip and unzip, and new keyboard shortcuts.There are also some welcome UI additions when it comes to selecting text, navigating through a long document, and cut, copy, and paste actions.

Andrea Nahles announced she was stepping down as leader of the centre-Left Social Democrats (SPD) after the party suffered its worst ever result in the European elections. Her decision led to renewed calls for the SPD to pull out of Mrs Merkel's coalition government, which would leave it without a majority in parliament. But the party's MPs are believed to be reluctant to force new elections in which they could suffer even more damaging losses. Ms Nahles' resignation came as a shock new opinion poll showed the German Green party in first place for the first time, after overtaking Mrs Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU). "Discussions and feedback from the party have made it clear to me that I no longer have the necessary support to continue in office," Ms Nahles said in a statement to party members on Sunday. European election results: New EU Parliament "I sincerely hope that you will be able to restore trust and mutual respect again and find a leader you can support." Her decision to step down after just a year in office comes amid panic in the party at its rapidly collapsing vote. One of the two mainstream German political parties, the SPD has seen its role on the centre-Left usurped by the Greens in recent years. Ms Nahles took over as party leader in the wake of the decision to enter a new coalition with Mrs Merkel after the SPD suffered its worst ever general election result in 2017, winning just 20 per cent of the vote. But the party's support has continued to plunge under her leadership. It came third in the European elections with only 15.8 per cent, and hit a new low of just 12 per cent in an opinion poll released at the weekend. Facing growing discontent within the party and a rumoured coup plot by her predecessor as leader, Martin Schulz, Ma Nahles issued a "back me or sack me" ultimatum to MPs by calling a vote on her leadership scheduled for Tuesday. Mrs Merkel has already said she will not fight another election, and there is no obvious alternative coalition partner. But most observers think the SPD will not be prepared to risk new elections while it is doing so badly in the opinion polls. "Nobody wants to be the author of his own downfall. Even the SPD does not want to destroy itself," Werner Weidenfeld, a leading German political scientist, told Bild newspaper. Most of the SPD's losses have been at the hands of the German Green party. A new poll released at the weekend showed the Greens in first place for the first time on 27 per cent, just ahead of Mrs Merkel's CDU on 26 per cent. The SPD were third on 12 per cent, ahead of the nationalist Alternative for Germany party (AfD), which continued to fall well short of its highs of last year on just 11 per cent. The report goes into greater detail about that, in addition to ranking each state and the top 50 US cities with the fastest speeds.Among the key findings of the report, tech hub cities surprisingly don't excel when compared to the 50 largest cities. For example, San Francisco, Seattle, and Austin are all ranked in the bottom half of that list of 50 when measuring download and upload speeds, plus overall video experience.Across all 50 states, the report continues, smartphone users experienced download speeds that range from 12.1 Mbps in Mississippi to 32.9 Mbps in New Jersey. States with the fastest speeds are mostly concentrated in the mid-Atlantic and New England regions, while the two fastest cities are Cleveland and Minneapolis, according to the report. There's also a wide divergence in speeds between the top and bottom of that list of 50 cities, with the fastest cities offering speeds that are almost twice as fast as Oklahoma City, which ranks at the bottom.High upload speeds in New York and Salt Lake City mean you'll have the best experience there when sharing smartphone photos and videos. Interestingly, Los Angeles (the home of Hollywood) comes in at a middling 30th place when ranked for mobile video experience.5G offers significant promise in these areas, but, of course, it will still be a while longer before most ordinary customers get to experience that level of connectivity. "In even the lowest-scoring US city for 4G availability," Opensignal notes in the report, "smartphone users spend 94.7% of the time connected to 4G rather than older technologies such as 3G. Opensignal expects it will be years before smartphone users spend as much time connected to 5G networks as they do 4G networks and hence measures of 4G mobile experience such as 4G availability will continue to be important."

| Virginia Republicans blocked law to ban sales of gun parts used in mass shooting Posted: 02 Jun 2019 03:02 AM PDT  A Virginia bill designed to ban sales of large capacity gun magazines similar to those used by the Virginia Beach shooting suspect died in committee in January on a party-line vote.The fate of the legislation, SB1748, was so widely expected that the outcome drew virtually no public attention.For more than 20 years, Republicans and a few rural Democrats in the General Assembly have killed almost every measure aimed at restricting gun ownership.The Republicans blocked a major push for gun control after the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings, where 33 people died.They chose instead to respond to that shooting by joining Democrats to enact mental-health reforms.Although there are signs that public opinion has been shifting in favour of gun control in Virginia, the state has a history of support for gun rights symbolised by the location in Fairfax of the headquarters of the National Rifle Association (NRA).Each year, Democrats propose multiple gun-control measures, such as strengthening background checks, limiting handgun purchases to one per month and allowing localities to regulate guns in public buildings.They call these "common-sense" measures to save lives.Each year, Republican majorities in one or both chambers of the legislature vote them down, usually in committee. GOP legislators say their goal is never to infringe on people's Second Amendment rights."There's been no tragedy that has got the [Republican] majority to think twice and consider reasonable efforts," said Adam Ebbin, a Democrat from Alexandria, who sponsored SB1748 and is co-chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Caucus.A big reason, he said, is the political influence of gun rights organisations."Part of the problem is that the [Virginia] Citizens Defence League and the NRA have a stranglehold on the votes of the Republicans," Mr Ebbin said.League President Philip Van Cleave, whose organisation prides itself on taking stronger positions than the NRA, defended his group's record."Gun control does not save lives. It endangers innocent life by making it harder for good people to defend themselves," Mr Van Cleave said in an email. "The Republican leadership understands that basic truth."Mr Van Cleave said his group opposes all magazine restrictions, such as the 10-round limit proposed by Mr Ebbin's bill. "DC has those 10-round restrictions and eight times the murder rate of northern Virginia, which has no limits on magazine size," he said.The NRA did not respond to requests for comment. It typically maintains a low profile in the days immediately after a highly publicised shooting incident.After the Virginia Tech slayings, then the worst mass shooting by an individual in US history, gun-control advocates led by then-governor Tim Kaine, a Democrat and now a US senator, pushed hard to change some laws.The centrepiece of his package was a proposal to require gun sellers to conduct background checks on all buyers at gun shows.Instead, with Republican support, the legislature lowered the standard under which a mentally ill person can be forced into treatment, and expanded the criteria under which a mentally ill person can be barred from buying or owning guns.It also boosted funding by $42 million (£33 million) for community-based mental health treatment.The response disappointed gun-control advocates, including relatives and friends of Virginia Tech victims, who said people diagnosed with mental illness are less likely than others to commit violence with a firearm."The gun lobby likes to blame the gun violence problem on persons with mental illness, and nothing could be further from the truth," Lori Haas, state director for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, whose daughter was shot and injured at Virginia Tech, said. "While resources are necessary to increase services, and warranted for those state agencies and private organisations providing services, doing so is not going to stop the gun violence problem in Virginia," Ms Haas said.Virginia Senate Majority Leader Thomas Norment Jr, a Republican from James City, said it was too soon after the Virginia Beach shootings to talk politics."It is offensive, disrespectful, and tasteless that anyone – including Senator Ebbin and Ms Haas – would use a tragedy like this to promote a political agenda less than 24 hours after families and an entire community have suffered a loss of this magnitude," Mr Norment said in an email.Virginia Beach police said their officers shot and killed the suspected shooter after a lengthy gun battle in which he used two .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun that were purchased legally.Along with the weapons at the scene, investigators found a sound suppressor and extended magazines, which contain more than the standard number of rounds. Police have not identified a motive for the shooting.Mr Ebbin's bill would have prohibited any person from importing, selling, bartering or transferring a firearms magazine designed to hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition.Eight Republicans voted it down, with six Democrats in favour, in the Senate Courts of Justice Committee on 28 January.Police have not said how many rounds were contained by the Virginia Beach shooter's extended magazines.Internet advertisements for extended magazines for .45 semiautomatic handguns list standard magazines as holding seven to 15 rounds, and extended ones as holding 15 to 33 rounds.Another bill that died in the Virginia House in January would have allowed localities such as Virginia Beach to ban firearms from government buildings such as the one where the Friday shootings took place.Virginia Beach Council member Guy King Tower said after the shootings that it was regrettable that the city needed state approval to take such actions.Democratic governors have used executive powers at times to strengthen gun restrictions. In 2015, then-governor Terry McAuliffe, ordered a ban on guns in state office buildings.The biggest change in gun laws in Virginia in recent years has been one that relaxed controls. In 2012, then-governor Bob McDonnell signed a bill repealing the state's one-per-month limit on handgun purchases.Democrats have repeatedly sought to restore the limit, but without success.New York and other states have complained that the change has contributed to Virginia's status as a major centre of gun trafficking on the East Coast.Gun control advocates believe public sentiment is moving their way.They said they hit a major milestone in the 2017 elections by turning out as many of their supporters as their opponents did. Democrats won all of the state's top three elective offices that year, for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general.Some of those Democrats continued their efforts on Saturday.Governor Ralph Northam, in an interview with NPR, said he would continue to push lawmakers to pass gun safety legislation.Mr Northam noted that the Republican-controlled General Assembly killed gun-related bills he had proposed earlier this year as well as the year before.Earlier in the day, Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring told MSNBC that it was time to enact red flag legislation, background checks and other gun regulations.So far, it has not translated into success in the legislature. Both parties are expected to use gun control as an issue to mobilise their bases in the November elections, when all seats in the General Assembly will be up for grabs.At present, the GOP holds two-seat majorities in both the House and Senate.
