UC President Mark Yudof to step down in August

University of California President Mark Yudof said Friday Jan. 18, 2013 that he plans to step down as head of one of the nation's leading systems of higher education, citing a "spate of taxing health issues." CPS CEO: Most High Schools, High-Performing Schools Won't Close

According to an article from the Chicago Tribune on Friday, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) chief Barbara Byrd-Bennett announced that the district would not be closing the doors of high schools or high-performing schools, with some exceptions, as it proceeds with closing some schools due to major budgetary issues. The decision comes in light of CPS releasing a cumulative list containing 330 schools that are currently under-utilized for educational purposes and are subject to being shut down.

Despite their zombie makeup, there was nothing lifeless about the members of the Philadelphia Student Union on Wednesday. PSU members, dressed as zombies, gathered in front of the Philadelphia Public School District (PPS) building to protest the district's plan to close 37 public schools. The students executed a flash mob dance to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" in protest of the potential school closures. Their zombie attire, and signs reading "RIP Philly's Schools," symbolized their 'dead' futures without the education of Philadelphia public schools. 

Black student who helped integrate University of Alabama dies

James Hood(Reuters) - One of the first black students to enroll at the University of Alabama 50 years ago, defying then-Governor George Wallace's pledge to block integration of the state's public schools, died on Thursday of natural causes, a funeral home said. James Hood, 70, died in his hometown of Gadsden, Alabama, according to his obituary notice published on Friday. Hood and Vivian Malone were the first African-American students to register to attend the all-white state university, and did so over the objections of a governor known for his resistance to the U.S. civil rights movement. ...
