Kaine to Trump: Syria slaughter is now on your watch Posted: 05 Apr 2017 09:26 AM PDT Sen. Tim Kaine, D- Va., rejecting the Trump administration's attempt to blame former President Obama for the continuing carnage in Syria, said it was time for President Trump to take responsibility for American policy in the Mideast. After a toxic gas attack reportedly left at least 70 people in Syria dead Tuesday, the White House released a statement faulting Obama's inaction in the Middle Eastern country after declaring the use of chemical weapons a "red line." |

EU's Barnier says quick Brexit means quick trade talks Posted: 05 Apr 2017 02:09 AM PDT The European Union's Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier told Britain on Wednesday that the sooner it agrees on divorce terms the sooner it can start talks on a future trade deal. "The sooner we agree the principles of an orderly withdrawal, the sooner we can prepare our future relations in trade," he told the European Parliament in Strasbourg. France's Barnier added that as the first EU institution to take a formal position on British Prime Minister Theresa May's letter triggering Brexit last week, parliament would set the "tone" for the negotiations. |
Zika causes birth defects in one in 10 pregnancies: U.S. study Posted: 04 Apr 2017 10:29 AM PDT By Julie Steenhuysen CHICAGO (Reuters) - About one in 10 pregnant women with confirmed Zika infections had a fetus or baby with birth defects, offering the clearest picture yet of the risk of Zika infection during pregnancy, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday. The report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is the first to analyze a group of U.S. women with clear, confirmed test results of Zika infection during pregnancy. Once considered a mild disease, a large outbreak of the virus that began in Brazil in 2015 and quickly spread through the Americas revealed that the mosquito-borne virus can cause severe brain damage and microcephaly, or small head size, when women are exposed during pregnancy. |

McConnell says he has the votes to scrap Supreme Court filibuster in Gorsuch standoff Posted: 04 Apr 2017 01:46 PM PDT Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday afternoon that he was confident he had the votes to change the body's rules if Democrats go through with their threat to filibuster President Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch. McConnell downplayed the significance of that change, even as other members of his caucus have said it would damage the Senate and lead to a more ideological, partisan Supreme Court. "The practical effect of all of this would be to take us back to where we were before Sen. Schumer convinced Democrats to routinely filibuster judges," McConnell said, referring to Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. |

These cities are totally slaying the solar power game Posted: 04 Apr 2017 02:20 PM PDT With the Trump administration targeting various government clean energy programs, we can think of no better time to celebrate the U.S. cities with the most installed solar energy. A new report found the country has made some serious solar strides in 2016, particularly in 20 cities across the country. SEE ALSO: Coal-fired electricity is at its lowest since officials started keeping track America's "shining cities" helped the country attain 42,000 megawatts of solar energy capacity by the end of 2016 — enough energy to power 8.3 million average homes and slash annual carbon emissions by 52.3 million metric tons, the Frontier Group and the Environment America Research and Policy Center reported. U.S. Cities by Cumulative Installed Solar PV Capacity, End of 2016.Image: Environment America Research and Policy CenterLast year, the 20 top U.S. cities collectively accounted for nearly as much solar power as the entire country had installed at the end of 2010. Solar power is rising across the U.S. and around the world as technology prices and installation costs plummet. In many major economies, solar power (sans subsidies) is starting to outcompete coal and natural gas, and new solar projects are costing less to build than wind farms, Bloomberg New Energy Finance found. Top 20 Solar Cities in 2016 (Total Installed Solar PV Capacity) San Diego, CA Los Angeles, CA Honolulu, HI San Jose, CA Phoenix, AZ Indianapolis, IN New York, NY San Antonio, TX Albuquerque, NM Las Vegas, NV San Fransisco, CA Denver, CO Sacramento, CA New Orleans, LA Riverside, CA Austin, TX Portland, OR Washington, D.C. Jacksonville, FL Newark, NJ Despite the serious increase in solar capacity, the majority of U.S. cities have only just started to tap into their true solar energy potential, the two environmental groups said in their report. Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, and San Antonio have the technical potential to generate "tens to hundreds of times more solar energy" than they do now, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)'s rooftop solar analysis for small buildings. The map below depicts each state's level of solar installation, so you can get a better sense of how beginners in the Midwest compare to "Solar Stars" on the West Coast — though even the top solar cities have room for improvement. Image: ENVIRONMENT AMERICA RESEARCH AND POLICY CENTERAccording to the report, San Diego — the nation's current solar energy installation leader — has developed "less than 14 percent of its technical potential for solar power on small buildings." With the Trump administration promising to double down on coal-fired power plants and unravel federal policies for clean energy, U.S. cities and states now have an even bigger role to play in tackling climate change. Russian metro bombing puts Putin's Syria policy to the test Posted: 04 Apr 2017 11:04 AM PDT By Denis Dyomkin and Christian Lowe MOSCOW (Reuters) - Islamist militants have targeted Russia many times before but Monday's bombing of a metro train in St Petersburg was, for President Vladimir Putin, personal: it happened in his native city on a day he was making a visit back home. The attack, which killed 14 people and wounded 50, is also a test for one of Putin's most contentious policies - his decision to launch a military intervention in Syria on the side of President Bashar al-Assad. Kremlin-watchers say the risk is that Russian voters could decide, after seeing the destruction in St Petersburg, that the Syrian operation is making them more vulnerable to such attacks - not safer as Putin promised. |

Drowning horse saved by father and son, after collapsing in their doorway Posted: 04 Apr 2017 09:43 PM PDT A horse narrowly escaped drowning in floods, thanks to the efforts of a family from the Australian town of Murwillumbah. Now a man, his wife and their son are being praised all over social media, having spent over five hours keeping the horse, who collapsed in their doorway, alive. SEE ALSO: Add this cheeky fella to your 'suburb-wandering seals of Australia' file Last Thursday night, Leigh Shepherd's wife noticed a noise coming from their neighbour's horse, Tilly, who was struggling in the deep water as a result from the floods. Shepherd decided to help retrieve the horse, after his wife said she was going to get it, according to ABC News. "I couldn't stand all my friends saying 'you let your wife swim out into flood waters, what were you doing?' So obviously I had to go out and get the bloody thing," he told the news outlet. Aided by their son Rob, the pair used a cord to help lead the horse to their house. It made it up the stairs, but collapsed in the middle of the doorway. The pair used a bodyboard to help keep Tilly's head above water, sitting by its side for the five hours it took for floods to subside. "She was just buggered, she couldn't move, she just lay there and was dependent on us," Rob told the news outlet. "We thought if she wasn't going to drown maybe hyperthermia or something like that would have got her." Despite fears it would not make it through, Tilly escaped relatively unscathed. It had a deep laceration on one of its front legs, as well as being very tired and sore from the ordeal. Tilly is now recovering back at home with its friend, a pig named Snooky. Nawww. South Sudanese troops butchered civilians, shot children: refugees Posted: 05 Apr 2017 08:01 AM PDT Hundreds of South Sudanese refugees fled into Uganda for a second day on Wednesday, bearing further grim testimony of an attack by government forces on the border town of Pajok in which at least 17 people were killed, according to a Reuters tally. The government denies its Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) forces target civilians and said Monday's operation in Pajok, a town of more than 10,000 people 15 km (10 miles) north of the Ugandan border, was to flush out rebel guerrillas. Reports that its soldiers had killed residents were untrue, SPLA deputy spokesman Colonel Santo Domic Chol said. |

U.S. coal companies ask Trump to stick with Paris climate deal Posted: 04 Apr 2017 03:39 PM PDT By Valerie Volcovici WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Some big American coal companies have advised President Donald Trump's administration to break his promise to pull the United States out of the Paris Climate Agreement – arguing that the accord could provide their best forum for protecting their global interests. Remaining in the global deal to combat climate change will give U.S. negotiators a chance to advocate for coal in the future of the global energy mix, coal companies like Cloud Peak Energy Inc and Peabody Energy Corp told White House officials over the past few weeks, according to executives and a U.S. official familiar with the discussions. |

Tesla overtakes giant Ford in market value Posted: 04 Apr 2017 03:34 AM PDT Tesla has become the second-largest US car maker in terms of market capitalization, displacing Ford, whose sales lagged amid concerns about the ability of the US market to keep growing. Many major auto makers reported US sales declines in March compared to a year ago, but Tesla over the weekend said it saw a huge jump in vehicles delivered to consumers in the first three months of the year. Tesla said it delivered 25,000 of its high-tech vehicles in the January-March period -- a 69 percent surge compared to the first three months of 2016 -- indicating it was on its way to meeting its goal of 50,000 vehicle deliveries by mid-2017. |

7 Tips for Millennials Who Would Like to Retire Someday Posted: 04 Apr 2017 06:21 AM PDT It's easy to put retirement on the back burner. Millennials have been presented with a unique set of challenges and opportunities, says Jason R. Staley, investment relationship manager at Schneider Downs Wealth Management Advisors in Pittsburgh. The "lack of wage growth and uncertain job markets, combined with significant amounts of student debt and the likelihood of social safety net programs like Social Security and Medicare being less generous to millennials than baby boomers, create an uncertain economic future," Staley says. |
Outrage as Syria 'chemical attack' kills dozens in rebel-held town Posted: 04 Apr 2017 07:37 PM PDT A suspected chemical attack in rebel-held northwestern Syria killed dozens of civilians including children and left many more sick and gasping, causing international outrage Wednesday. The attack on the town of Khan Sheikhun killed at least 58 civilians and saw dozens suffer respiratory problems and symptoms including vomiting, fainting and foaming at the mouth, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said. Syria's opposition blamed President Bashar al-Assad's forces, saying the attack cast doubt on the future of peace talks. |
