Stephen Willeford, who lives near the Texas church targeted yesterday, grabbed his own rifle and rushed to confront Devin Kelley after being told an attack was under way by his daughter. As the 55-year-old arrived outside the church he came face-to-face with Kelley. Mr Willeford, a plumber with no military experience, shot him in the side through a gap in his body armour, forcing the killer to flee. Johnnie Langendorff, left, and Stephen Willeford helped stop the gunman Mr Willeford and another passing resident, Johnnie Langedorff, then chased him at almost 100 miles per hour in a car as the wounded killer tried to make a getaway after taking a hostage. Kelley is said to have killed 26 people – including a child aged five – when he stormed into the church on Sunday dressed in black tactical gear and armed with an assault rifle. The man then chased the gunman." Mr Langedorff said: "He got a little bit of a jump on us. So we were doing about 95 miles per hour, going around traffic and everything. "He just lost control and that's when I put the vehicle in park. The other gentleman jumped out and had his rifle drawn on him and he didn't move after that." Suspect Devin Kelley Credit: Mr Langendorff told KSAT television that he was acting on instinct to try to prevent the suspect from escaping. He said the member of the community asked for help and got into Mr Langendorff's truck. They took off at high speed in pursuit of the gunman on a nearby highway as police were going in the opposite direction toward the church. Mr Langendorff said the gunman eventually lost control of his vehicle and crashed. He said the other civilian walked up to the vehicle with his gun drawn and the suspect did not move. He stood guard over the gunman until police arrived five to seven minutes later. Mr Langendorff said: "I was strictly just acting on what's the right thing to do." "We know that his ex-in-laws or in-laws came to church here from time to time," Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt Jr. told CNN in an interview. "They were not here yesterday." Kelley served in logistics readiness at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, and was jailed for one year in 2012 on two counts alleging assault on his wife Danielle Shields and their child. In 2014, he was kicked out of the military. Old school friends described Kelley, who lived in nearby New Braunfels, Texas, as a "creep" who made no secret of his anti-religious views. Local TV images as police look at the alleged gunman's car Nina Rose Nava, who went to school with Kelley, said: "He was always talking about how people who believe in God were stupid and trying to preach his atheism.' On Kelley's Facebook page, he appeared to have a fascination with guns. | Giant cruise ships to be diverted away from Venice's historic centre - but there's a catch Posted: 08 Nov 2017 03:20 AM PST  After years of see-saw debate between Venetians and the tourism industry, giant cruise ships are to be banned from sailing past St Mark's Square, the Italian government announced. Passenger liners are currently allowed to pass within a few hundred yards of St Mark's Square and Venice's historic centre on their way to the lagoon city's international passenger terminal. Campaigners have long argued that the huge vessels, which carry up to 5,000 passengers and crew, dwarf Venice's cupolas, spires and palaces, while eroding canal banks with the waves they create as they churn down the picturesque Giudecca Canal. Under the new plan, they will be diverted well away from the World Heritage city and will have to dock at a terminal in the industrial port of Marghera on the mainland – a far cry from the romance of St Mark's and the Grand Canal. Passengers will then be ferried to Venice in smaller boats, or in coaches, along the narrow land bridge that connects the city to the mainland. The new navigation route will involve big cruise ships entering the Venetian lagoon from the Adriatic through an inlet far to the south of the one currently used. Graphic: The new routes Smaller cruise vessels – those of 55,000 tonnes or less – will be allowed to continue to use the present route. But there is a catch – the new measures will not come into effect for three or four years. The move was announced by Graziano Delrio, the transport minister, after a meeting of a governmental committee tasked with protecting Venice's delicate cultural heritage. "After years of study, we have found a viable solution for a sustainable route through the lagoon, without penalizing the tourism industry, which is so important for Venice," the minister said. Luigi Brugnaro, the mayor of Venice, hailed the plan as a sensible compromise that would satisfy the cruise ship industry whilst addressing the concerns of locals and preserving the lagoon environment. "We want it to be clear to Unesco (the UN's cultural heritage body) and the whole world that we have a solution," he said. "This takes into account all the jobs created by the cruise industry, which we absolutely couldn't afford to lose, and we can start to work seriously on planning cruises." Gianni Berengo Gardin, an Italian photographer who takes striking black and white images of cruise ships looming over Venice's canals and churches, said he was cautiously optimistic about the plan. "It worries me that it is going to take three or four years, because in that time they may change their minds. "But it at least seems possible that in future we will no longer see huge ships pass along the Giudecca Canal and in front of St Mark's Square," he wrote in a front page opinion piece for La Repubblica newspaper. Credit: AFP In an informal referendum organised by a campaign group in June, nearly 99 per cent of the 18,000 Venetians who took part voted in favour of banning giant cruise ships from the city's lagoon altogether, saying they disgorge too many tourists and damage the environment. They were asked: "Do you want big cruise ships to stay outside Venice's lagoon and no new shipping channels dug inside the lagoon?" The organisers of the referendum support an alternative plan which would involve the construction of an entirely new cruise ship terminal at one of the three entrances to the lagoon. Called Venice Cruise 2.0, the terminal would consist of a 2,000ft-long pier capable of accommodating four large ships at a time. Passengers would then be transferred to smaller boats which would take them to Venice.

Farhana Ahmed, 40, from north-west London, had been in custody since being charged over the 2015 social media posts while her home-schooled children, aged between six and 16, were cared for by relatives. Judge Christopher Moss QC sentenced her to a suspended term of two years after she pleaded guilty to encouraging terrorism and three counts of disseminating documents. The judge was "moved" by a letter from her eldest son and told Ahmed: "In your exceptional case, the sooner you are returned to your children, the better for all concerned." The court had heard how Ahmed had been a "prolific" contributor to a Facebook group, which described itself as a "pro-IS group, the purpose of it is to connect mawhideen brothers from different parts of the world and to help each other". She posted messages in favour of Isil Credit: Ed Willcox/Central She praised the Paris terror attacks and her posts included a speech by an IS spokesman and a link to an "extensive online library" of terrorist publications, the court heard. Ahmed used a fake name to encourage terrorism on the social media site between September and November 2015. Prosecutor Ben Lloyd said: "It is clear from the defendant's decision to join this group, and then by virtue of the material that she posted, that she shared the group's ideology and aims." Ahmed's posts had attracted a large number of followers. The British national travelled to Turkey with her husband Muhammed Burmal Karwani and their five children in November 2013. She and the children returned to Britain while her husband stayed behind and, when she tried to go to Turkey in August 2015, she was turned away by authorities, the Old Bailey heard. Mr Lloyd said: "It may be that following this, the defendant decided to begin her campaign on Facebook encouraging terrorism." The court heard Ahmed's behaviour was borne from a difficult period of her life, and she had now rejected extremism. The court heard she had been effectively a lone parent living in temporary accommodation and had "suffered at the hands of strangers". In mitigation, Hossain Zahir said his client was a "good mother" and was full of remorse. Judge Moss said her period in custody had already had an "extremely adverse effect on the children". He told Ahmed: "You have devoted your life, apart from this abhorrent behaviour, to the care of your children. "There is no realistic danger of you returning to the mindset evidence of your conduct of two years ago. "You want nothing more than to return to your family and your family want nothing more that to return to them. They have suffered greatly by your period in custody. Your case is in an entirely exceptional category." As she left the dock, Ahmed, who wore a headscarf, acknowledged the judge and quietly said "thank you". The prosecution offered no evidence on two terrorism-funding charges which related to thousands of pounds sent to Ahmed's husband, who has since been acquitted of terrorism offences in Turkey and returned to the UK.
