Here are some outrageous things the Philippine leader has said.President Trump shocked both human rights advocates and, reportedly, members of his own administration this weekend when he extended an invitation for a White House visit to Rodrigo Duterte, the outlandish authoritarian president of the Philippines. Duterte said he might be too busy to swing by Washington, but the invitation itself is striking. He has been been accused of inciting extrajudicial killings as part of a violent crackdown on drug abuse and crime that's resulted in thousands of civilian deaths since he took office last June.

This is the stupidest thing on Microsoft’s new laptop

Posted: 02 May 2017 12:01 PM PDT

This is the stupidest thing on Microsoft's new laptop

Microsoft has a new laptop. It's called the Surface Laptop, and it appears to do many things well. It's basically a spiritual successor to the MacBook Air, but more quirky, because it comes in various colors and has fabric on the keyboard.

Unfortunately, Microsoft took its rather good-looking laptop out behind the woodshed and murdered it with one particularly dumb choice: there's no USB-C port.

Microsoft chose to go with its proprietary magnetic charger, a USB-A port, a miniDisplayPort, and a headphone jack. Apple was lambasted (and rightly so) for the lack of ports on its new MacBook, but at least it had an explanation: USB-C is the future, therefore we're just going to stick only USB-C ports on our futuristic laptop.

Microsoft's approach seems to just be to give a stiff middle finger to common sense.

USB-C is the future. It's not the only port you need right now -- chances are you still have a whole bunch of things that use USB-A -- but it is a fantastic standard for the future. The port is tiny, you can connect it both ways, and it's incredibly powerful. You can use it to charge device, you can use it to hook up a laptop to a monitor and charge it with just one cable. You can use the same cable that you use to charge your phone to charge your laptop.

Even better, using USB-C for charging gives people choice over chargers. I've been using a tiny USB-C charger for my laptop for months now, and it really does feel like the future. Remember when cellphones used to have proprietary chargers, and then everyone switched to microUSB and the world became a better place? That's what's about to happen with laptops, but Microsoft apparently doesn't want to be a part of it.

During the education-focused event, Microsoft said that the Surface Laptop would be "just as good on graduation day as day one." As USB-C infiltrates portable hard drives, projector hookups, flash drives and phone cables, Surface Laptop-toting students are going to be left behind. That's the opposite of what Microsoft wants, and I just don't understand.

Hamas softens stance on Israel, drops Muslim Brotherhood link

Hamas softens stance on Israel, drops Muslim Brotherhood linkBy Nidal al-Mughrabi and Tom Finn GAZA/DOHA (Reuters) - The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas on Monday dropped its longstanding call for Israel's destruction, but said it still rejected the country's right to exist and backs "armed struggle" against it. In a policy document presented in Doha by its leader Khaled Meshaal, Hamas also said it would end its association with the Muslim Brotherhood, a move apparently aimed at improving ties with Gulf Arab states and Egypt, which view the Brotherhood as a terrorist group. Israel responded to the announcement by accusing Hamas of trying to "fool the world", while the group's main Palestinian political rival, the Fatah faction of President Mahmoud Abbas, also reacted coolly to the policy shift.

Merkel pushed Putin at a frosty encounter to ensure a ceasefire in war-torn east Ukraine, but the Russian leader laid the blame on Kiev for a European-brokered peace deal hitting a dead end. The rare visit also saw the German chancellor confront Putin over rights issues in Russia, including the alleged persecution of gay men in the North Caucasus region of Chechnya.

The sound of a spacecraft passing between Saturn and its rings is straight out of 'Alien'

Posted: 02 May 2017 11:42 AM PDT

The sound of a spacecraft passing between Saturn and its rings is straight out of 'Alien'On April 26, NASA's Cassini spacecraft shot between Saturn and its innermost ring, going where no human-made object has gone before. Cassini has already made some new discoveries thanks to its dive through the ring plane. One of those insights is that the area between the planet and its rings "sounds" different than other parts of space surrounding Saturn.  SEE ALSO: The Cassini spacecraft dove between Saturn and its rings: Here are the photos to prove it According to new audio files released by NASA, the 1,500-mile-wide gap between Saturn and its distinctive rings actually sounds pretty empty.  A raw image of Saturn as seen by Cassini not long after its ring dive.Image: NASA/JPL-CaltechOther parts of space around Saturn are filled with particles of dust that can be heard by Cassini's plasma detector. This instrument picks up the signal from dust that vaporizes as it hits the fast-moving spacecraft.  But the gap between Saturn and its rings is comparitively, and unexpectedly, silent.  "The region between the rings and Saturn is 'the big empty,' apparently," Cassini project manager Earl Maize said in a statement. "Cassini will stay the course, while the scientists work on the mystery of why the dust level is much lower than expected." Scientists compared data picked up from Cassini's ring dive and a previous pass through a faint ring of dust and debris on Dec. 18, 2016.  The 2016 data sounds crackly, with a high number of plasma pops heard as Cassini passed through the ring itself.  The data taken by the instrument late last month, however, sounds very different.  Instead of crackly pops, the April data sounds more like static from a TV screen punctuated by a high whistling noise that, according to NASA, is a type of plasma wave that scientists are planning to investigate further. "It was a bit disorienting — we weren't hearing what we expected to hear," Cassini scientist William Kurth said in the statement.  "I've listened to our data from the first dive several times and I can probably count on my hands the number of dust particle impacts I hear." During that first ring dive, the bits of debris Cassini ran into were only about the size of the particles found in smoke, NASA said.  Cassini is now in the last phase of its mission at Saturn.  The spacecraft will continue to make dives through the gap between Saturn and its rings until the planned end of its mission in September, when it will make its death dive into the world's thick atmosphere.  WATCH: Watch clouds move above Saturn's largest moon in new NASA video

Trump says China could have hacked Democratic emailsPresident Donald Trump said China may have hacked the emails of Democratic officials to meddle with the 2016 presidential election, countering the view of U.S. intelligence officials who have said Moscow orchestrated the hacks. In an interview transcript published on Sunday, Trump gave no evidence backing his allegation, first made on the eve of the Nov. 8 presidential election, that China could have hacked the emails of his rivals. "If you don't catch a hacker, okay, in the act, it's very hard to say who did the hacking," the president said in an interview with CBS "Face the Nation." "(It) could have been China, could have been a lot of different groups." The hackers roiled the presidential campaign by making public embarrassing emails sent by Democratic operatives and aides to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Boaters stranded 4 miles from land were saved by Siri on an iPhone 7

Boaters stranded 4 miles from land were saved by Siri on an iPhone 7

The iPhone's "Hey Siri" feature helped save three fisherman from what could have otherwise been a tragic turn of events. According to Fox 4 News out of Florida, three fisherman were cruising along about 4 miles off the coast when they began encountering a violent spate of waves. Before long, the crew's 18-foot boat proved no match for the waves as water began overtaking the boat.

Per the report, one of the fisherman used the "Hey Siri" feature on his iPhone 7 to call 911. Shortly thereafter, a helicopter from the coast guard went out in search of the trio before finding them and bringing them back to safety.

"They had an iPhone 7, which I'm learning today is waterproof. However, he couldn't touch the screen with his fingers because they were cold, but he used Siri to call 911," Sgt. James Barrett said.

Notably, this isn't the first instance we've seen of iPhone owners utilizing "Hey Siri" in order to call for help when dialing 911 wasn't feasible. Just a few months ago, for example, a four-year old used the feature in order to call 911 after his mom passed out. And this past summer, a mother in Australia used the feature to call for help while she tended to her 1-year-old daughter who had stopped breathing.

As the BBC reported a few months back:

Stacey Gleeson grabbed her iPhone and ran to the child's room to help her but dropped it as she turned on the light. She shouted at the handset to activate Siri and told it to get the emergency services on speakerphone as she began CPR.

Ms Gleeson told the BBC she feels it may have saved her daughter's life.

The "Hey Siri" feature on the iPhone was originally introduced on the iPhone 6s and is made possible by Apple's M9 motion coprocessor. Apple has advertised the feature as a helpful way to use the iPhone's various features hands-free -- with the company's Cookie Monster commercial being a prime example -- but "Hey Siri" appears to be incredibly useful in emergency situations as well.
