Since When Is Being Patriotic Racist? Posted: COMMENTARY | I am absolutely appalled a high school basketball team would be called out for a "U.S.A." chant. Being patriotic is not being insensitive. In fact, America needs more patriots, but apparently, some folks in Texas don't agree. As reported by KENS5 in San Antonio, Alamo Heights High School students have had a complaint filed against them for chanting "U.S.A., U.S.A., U.S.A." |
Surgeon general declares youth smoking an "epidemic" Posted: CHICAGO (Reuters) - Smoking among America's youth has reached epidemic proportions, starting them on the path to a lifetime of addiction, the U.S. surgeon general's office said in its first report on youth smoking since 1994. B.C. teachers defiant as public schools reopen after three day strike Posted: VANCOUVER - Public school teachers in British Columbia head back to class today as they wrap up a legal, three day strike. |
Cash-poor schools raid rivals in bid to boost student rosters Posted: (Reuters) - As American public school administrators look to bring in more money by recruiting students overseas, they are also hunting closer to home - hoping to poach pupils from rival schools and to draw in home-schooled children. Schools generally get more state funding as their enrollment rises, so districts across the United States are seeking to boost their numbers by attracting students from other public schools in their town or even elsewhere in the state. They're also trying to reel back in students who have left the public system to be home-schooled. ... |
Utah lawmakers pass bill to curb sex education in schools Posted: SALT LAKE CITY (Reuters) - Utah would become the first state to ban public schools from teaching contraception as a way of preventing pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases under a bill given final legislative approval by state lawmakers. The measure, which cleared Utah's Republican-controlled House and Senate mainly along party-line votes, would also bar instruction on homosexuality or other aspects of human sexuality except for materials that encourage abstinence before marriage. ... |
