Will teachers' 'sickout' help or harm Detroit's students? Posted: 11 Jan 2016 12:05 PM PST Detroit Public Schools (DPS) serve more than 46,300 students, who often learn in buildings that lack basics like working water fountains and educational materials, according to teachers. Official strikes by public employees are illegal in Michigan, and the DFT does not support the January 11 sickouts. Calling teachers "the glue that holds this system together," DFT interim president Ivy Bailey has not endorsed the sick-outs, but suggested that those criticizing teachers for their protest should see schools' "deplorable conditions," such as rat infestations. |
Teacher 'sick-out' absences close dozens of Detroit schools Posted: 11 Jan 2016 11:56 AM PST Sixty-four of the district's 97 schools were closed on Monday morning, Detroit Public Schools spokeswoman Michelle Zdrodowski said. Roughly 46,300 students are enrolled in district schools. The school district is drowning under $3.5 billion of debt and needs to be rescued by the state of Michigan, according to a report released on Wednesday by Citizens Research Council of Michigan, a nonprofit public affairs group. |

A Q&A About College ‘529’ Plans Posted: 10 Jan 2016 07:25 PM PST When 529 funds are used to pay for college tuition, how does one prove to the IRS that the money was spent on tuition? When you have a 529 plan, you'll get a form 1099-Q detailing any withdrawals you make from your account, says Keith Bernhardt, vice president of retirement and college products at fund manager Fidelity Investments. "However, it is up to the account owner to keep track of which withdrawals were for qualified higher education expenses and which withdrawals are not eligible for favorable tax treatment," he says. |
Spain's Princess Cristina to stand trial in landmark corruption case Posted: 10 Jan 2016 06:36 PM PST Spain's Princess Cristina and her husband go on trial Monday under intense global media scrutiny in a landmark corruption case that has outraged the country and sullied the monarchy's reputation. Cristina, a 50-year-old mother-of-four with a master's degree from New York University, will be the first Spanish royal to face criminal charges in court since the monarchy was reinstated following the 1975 death of dictator General Francisco Franco. The trial of the princess and the 17 other accused, including her husband, former Olympic handball player Inaki Urdangarin, will get underway at 9:15 am (0815 GMT) at a court in Palma on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, where the Spanish royals have a holiday home. |
