Nikol Pashinyan: from fugitive to victorious protest leader Posted: 24 Apr 2018 10:25 AM PDT Armenia's opposition lawmaker Nikol Pashinyan led mass anti-government protests that culminated in the resignation of newly appointed Prime Minister Serzh Sarkisian and has declared he is ready to lead the country. A fortnight ago, few in Armenia would have believed that the 42-year-old could bring tens of thousands of people out onto the streets of Yerevan and other cities, eventually forcing the veteran leader to resign. Before these protests, Pashinyan was mostly associated with the tragic events following the 2008 presidential vote that first brought Sarkisian to power, when 10 people died in clashes between police and supporters of the defeated opposition candidate. |

America Must Come to Terms with Reality in Syria Posted: 24 Apr 2018 04:40 PM PDT The joint attack carried out by the United States, United Kingdom and France on April 14 in Syria—targeting three sites related to Assad's chemical weapons program—was a firm reaction and punishment for Assad's continued use of chemical weapons against Syrian civilians. What singled out this chemical weapons attack from others Assad carried out over the past year was that it was not limited to the use of chlorine. The large number of civilian casualties and the fact that sarin nerve agent was mixed with the chlorine sparked the second military response by the Trump administration—this time together with the United Kingdom and France—with the aim of upholding the well-established international norm against the use of chemical weapons. |

'Maximum' security as Philippines readies Boracay shutdown Posted: 24 Apr 2018 01:52 AM PDT Police with assault rifles patrolled entry points to Boracay island on Tuesday just days before a six-month shutdown and clean-up of one of the Philippines' top tourist attractions. President Rodrigo Duterte had branded the renowned white-sand resort a "cesspool" fouled by dumped sewage and imposed the temporary ban on visitors that is due to take effect Thursday. In Boracay, police conducted exercises simulating clashes with protesters, terrorist attacks and a hostage incident even as they said there was no specific threat. |
Posted: 25 Apr 2018 01:22 PM PDT A former gang member sentenced to death for killing a five-year-old girl and her grandmother when he opened fire at a child's birthday party is to be executed in Texas. Erick Davila has spent nine years on death row after used a laser-sighted semi-automatic rifle to spray bullets at about 20 people — more than a dozen of them children — in apparent retaliation for an attack by one of the people attending the party. Annette Stevenson, 48, and her granddaughter, Queshawn Stevenson, were killed in the 6 April 2008 attack and four others were wounded, including the girl celebrating her ninth birthday. |

Trump and France's Macron seek new measures on Iran as deadline looms Posted: 24 Apr 2018 12:13 PM PDT By Jeff Mason and Marine Pennetier WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron pledged on Tuesday to seek stronger measures to contain Iran, as the U.S. leader considers whether to ditch an international accord meant to prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. At a joint news conference after lengthy talks, Trump did not repeat threats to withdraw from the 2015 agreement with Iran which was negotiated by his predecessor, former President Barack Obama, but made clear he has little patience for staying in the deal. Midway through a three-day state visit by Macron, the two leaders were remarkably chummy, repeatedly shaking hands and extolling each other's friendship. |

U.S. Admiral: China Is Now Capable of Controlling the South China Sea Posted: 24 Apr 2018 07:16 AM PDT Pick to take over as Pacific Command chief calls for maintaining U.S. presence. In response to questions for how to respond to China's increased military presence in the region, Admiral Davidson advocated a sustained US military presence and investing in weapons technology. If Chinese leaders thought that saying goodbye to their least favorite US military commander, current US Pacific Command chief Admiral Harry Harris, would mean a more amenable replacement is on the way, they had better guess again. |

Boeing reports jump in 1Q profits, lifts 2018 forecast Posted: 25 Apr 2018 06:39 AM PDT Boeing reported a surge in first-quarter profits on Wednesday and lifted its full-year earnings forecast following a strong performance in commercial aviation and defense programs. The results again reflect broad health in commercial aviation as the airline industry enjoys a more stable financial period and as flying becomes much more common in the Middle East, Asia and other developing regions. A big player in China, Boeing has often been seen as vulnerable to a trade war between the United States and China, a possibility that topped Wall Street's list of worries earlier this month but has receded of late amid softer rhetoric between Washington and Beijing. |
Posted: 25 Apr 2018 01:09 AM PDT The Toronto van attack, which killed 10 people and injured many more, seemed like an unexplained and unexpected act of brutality. Shortly before the attack on Monday, a chilling post appeared on the suspect's now-deleted Facebook feed. It saluted Elliot Rodger, and went onto use a number of words common to the dark internet community that appeared to have spawned it. |

Nigerian lawmakers invite Buhari to discuss communal killings Posted: 25 Apr 2018 07:16 AM PDT Nigerian lawmakers voted on Wednesday to invite President Muhammadu Buhari to the House of Representatives to discuss a spate of killings in central Nigeria. Hundreds of people have died in clashes this year between semi-nomadic herdsmen and settled farmers in central states, including 16 killed in an attack on a church in Benue on Tuesday. The violence has raised questions about the government's ability to maintain security in the country, putting pressure on Buhari less than a year before an election he wants to contest. |

Fadi Mohammad al-Batsh, 35, was killed in a hail of bullets by two attackers Saturday as he walked to a mosque for dawn prayers. The family of Batsh, a member of Islamist militant group Hamas who was said to be a rocket-making expert, has accused Israel's Mossad spy agency of carrying out the killing. |

Eurofighter doubts U.S. will use nuclear certification to tilt German jets bid Posted: 25 Apr 2018 01:48 PM PDT By Andrea Shalal BERLIN (Reuters) - The head of Eurofighter on Wednesday said he did not expect the United States to slow certification of the European fighter's ability to carry nuclear weapons as a way to influence a competition to replace Germany's aging 90 Tornado jets. The Eurofighter is a joint project between British defense group BAE, European airplane maker Airbus and Italy's Leonardo. Airbus and Eurofighter on Tuesday submitted six binders of information to the German defense ministry, which has said it will prioritize a European fighter, but has also asked for information about the Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jet and Boeing Co's F-15E and F/A-18E/F jets. |
Taiwan to stage live-fire drill simulating China "invasion" Posted: 24 Apr 2018 01:28 AM PDT Taiwan will practice thwarting a Chinese "invasion" in annual live fire drills in June, simulating surprise coastal assaults to reflect increased military threats from Beijing, officials said Tuesday. China's growing military is increasingly flexing its muscles and held live-fire drills last week in the Taiwan Strait -- the narrow waterway separating the Chinese mainland from Taiwan -- following weeks of naval manoeuvres in the area. Chinese officials said their drills were to safeguard Beijing's territorial sovereignty, a major priority for President Xi Jinping. |

Officers suspect Minassian was the driver of a rented white van that ploughed into pedestrians at about 1.30pm local time on Monday, killing 10 people and injuring 15 more. |
