How Should Transgender High School Athletes Pick Their Teams? Posted: 10 Mar 2015 06:54 AM PDT Minnesota's legislature is considering a Republican-backed bill that would essentially limit high school students to playing on the athletic teams of their gender at birth. The bill would also restrict transgender students' locker room and bathroom usage. The new legislation comes months after the Minnesota State High School League, a voluntary coalition of about 500 schools, approved a measure that would allow students to compete on whatever athletic teams best reflect their gender identity. Already, under Minnesota law, girls are allowed to play on boys' athletic teams. |

Myanmar riot police break up student protest over education law Posted: 10 Mar 2015 05:20 AM PDT A weeklong standoff between students and security forces in Myanmar turned violent Tuesday when baton-wielding riot police broke up a demonstration over a controversial education law. The students had been marching towards Yangon, Myanmar's biggest city and former capital. Hundreds set out on foot from the central city of Mandalay more than a month ago in a symbolic protest against a new education law they say curbs academic freedom by centralizing state control over higher education. The crackdown comes amid Myanmar's unsteady transition from military rule to democracy and signals that the country's reforms are far from complete. |
