U.S. warship sails near disputed South China Sea islands: U.S. official Posted: 30 Sep 2018 04:51 AM PDT Beijing and Washington are locked in a trade war that has seen them impose increasingly severe rounds of tariffs on each other's imports. The operation was the latest attempt to counter what Washington sees as Beijing's efforts to limit freedom of navigation in the strategic waters, where Chinese, Japanese and some Southeast Asian navies operate. China's claims in the South China Sea, through which about $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes each year, are contested by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. |

US court opens new legal 'Stairway,' overturns Zeppelin case Posted: 29 Sep 2018 11:58 AM PDT The court in San Francisco overturned a 2016 judgment by a jury which found no proof the classic 1971 Zeppelin song breached the copyright of "Taurus," written by Randy Wolfe of a Los Angeles band called Spirit. Wolfe's trustee, Michael Skidmore, filed the case in 2015 on behalf of his late friend who long maintained he deserved credit for "Stairway" but drowned in 1997 having never taken legal action over the song. The case is "remanded for a new trial," the higher court panel ruled Friday in a 37-page decision supporting Skidmore's appeal. |

California governor signs gun control bills into law Posted: 29 Sep 2018 02:09 AM PDT (Reuters) - California Governor Jerry Brown signed several gun control bills into law on Friday, including one measure that raises the minimum age for buying rifles and shotguns from 18 to 21. The new laws come seven months after a gunman opened fire with a semiautomatic assault-style rifle at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 14 students and three adults, the second-deadliest mass shooting at a public school in U.S. history. The rampage, which authorities say was carried out by a former student who was 19, has spurred unprecedented activism by victims and their families to prevent future gun violence and demanding stricter gun control across the United States. |

As Brexit divisions widen, PM May challenges Brexit critics Posted: 30 Sep 2018 11:14 AM PDT At the start of what is set to be one of the Conservative Party's stormiest annual conferences, May's plans were once again attacked by two former ministers, with her ex-foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, calling them "deranged". Just six months before Britain is due to leave the EU in the country's biggest shift in foreign and trade policy in more than 40 years, the debate over how to leave the bloc is still raging in the center-right Conservative Party, and even in government. May's already fragile leadership was put under further pressure this month when the EU rejected parts of the so-called Chequers plan. |

Elon Musk to resign as chair of Tesla board but remain CEO Posted: 29 Sep 2018 06:22 PM PDT Elon Musk has reached a deal over fraud charges that will see him step down as electric automaker Tesla's chairman of the board and pay a $20 million fine but stay on as CEO, US securities regulators said Saturday. The agreement eases pressure on Tesla's embattled CEO, who faced potentially being barred from serving as an officer or board member of a publicly traded company as a result of the charges, which stemmed from a tweet by Musk about taking the company private. "The settlements, which are subject to court approval, will result in comprehensive corporate governance and other reforms at Tesla -- including Musk's removal as chairman of the Tesla board -- and the payment by Musk and Tesla of financial penalties" of $20 million each, the Securities and Exchange Commission said in a statement. |
Security services in Syria's Raqqa uncover Islamic State cell Posted: 30 Sep 2018 04:37 AM PDT Security forces in northern Syria's Raqqa city said on Sunday they had uncovered an Islamic State sleeper cell which was plotting series of large attacks across the devastated city. Raqqa served as the de facto capital of Islamic State's self-proclaimed caliphate until it was retaken by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) militia alliance last October. A spokesman for the Raqqa Internal Security Forces set up by the SDF said it had killed two members of an Islamic State cell and detained five others during an operation on Saturday. |

British PM tells divided party: Don't play politics with my Brexit plan Posted: 29 Sep 2018 03:22 PM PDT Britain is due to leave the European Union on March 29, 2019, but the terms of the departure remain unclear. In an interview with the Sunday Times newspaper ahead of her party's conference, May took aim at those who have scorned her "Chequers" Brexit proposals accusing them of "playing politics" with Britain's future and undermining the national interest. "Unlike the prime minister I fought for this, I believe in it, I think it's the right thing for our country and I think that what is happening now is, alas, not what people were promised in 2016." May says her "Chequers" proposals are the only viable option, but EU leaders have said parts of them are unacceptable and many Conservative lawmakers have threatened to vote down a deal based on May's blueprint. |

Slimane back in black as king of Paris fashion week Posted: 29 Sep 2018 04:29 AM PDT Superstar designer Hedi Slimane returned to the Paris catwalk late Friday after a two-year absence with a slash and burn revamp of Celine that declared that black is back. With his two biggest fans, Lady Gaga and Karl Lagerfeld, sitting next to each other in the front row, Slimane drew a pitch-black portrait of his hometown which he called "Paris The Night". With the Kavanaugh Supreme Court vote having just ended on Capitol Hill, Slimane picked an"uncomfortable moment" to grind a female design legacy into the dust, The Guardian complained, especially since "Philo was notable for not equating a woman's power with her sexuality". |
Palestinians ask UN court to revoke US Jerusalem embassy move Posted: 29 Sep 2018 09:27 AM PDT Palestinian foreign minister Riyad al-Maliki said Saturday the Palestinians have petitioned the UN's top court, alleging that the US inauguration of an embassy in Jerusalem was illegal. The Palestinians have filed a lawsuit at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) "for violating international law by moving its embassy in Israel to the occupied city of Jerusalem", he said, quoted by the official Palestinian news agency WAFA. In December, US President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, despite Palestinian claims on part of the city and breaking with longstanding US policy. |

UK Conservative Chairman Lewis says working for election in 2022 Posted: 30 Sep 2018 01:24 AM PDT BIRMINGHAM, England (Reuters) - Britain's governing Conservatives are working towards a national election in 2022, the party's chairman Brandon Lewis said on Sunday, saying he hoped Prime Minister Theresa May would lead the party into that vote. Local media have reported May, under pressure over Brexit, could be considering calling an early election. May has said it would not be in the national interest. "The next general election is 2022," Lewis told Sky News. Asked if May would lead the Conservatives into that election, he said: "I hope she will and I think she will. ... |
North Korea refuses to denuclearise Posted: 29 Sep 2018 02:02 PM PDT North Korea's foreign minister has warned of increasing "mistrust" between Pyongyang and Washington DC, announcing that his country would not take the first steps towards denuclearisation without further guarantees from the Trump administration. Ri Yong-ho, addressing the United Nations general assembly on Saturday, said North Korea was growing frustrated at the slow progress since the June summit between Donald Trump, the US president, and Kim Jong-un, North Korea's leader. Mr Kim has said he would permanently dismantle North Korea's main nuclear complex, but only if the United States takes unspecified corresponding measures, and he promised to accept international inspectors to monitor the closing of a key missile test site and launch pad. But Mr Ri said the North has not seen "see any corresponding response" from Washington - only an increasing emphasis on sanctions. Mike Pompeo, the secretary of state, and Ri Yong-ho in Singapore in August "The perception that sanctions can bring us on our knees is a pipe dream of the people who are ignorant of us," he said, adding that the continued sanctions are "deepening our mistrust" and deadlocking the current diplomacy. "Without any trust in the US, there will be no confidence in our national security. "Under such circumstances there is no way we will unilaterally disarm ourselves first." Yet Mr Ri's comments were markedly different in tone from previous years, when the North lashed out after Mr Trump threatened to "totally destroy" the country. His speech was clearly meant to push a wary United States to agree to a declaration formally ending the Korean War, which ended with a ceasefire, not a peace treaty. Washington is wary of endorsing such a declaration, which could lead to a formal peace treaty. Mr Ri said that fully implementing the Singapore agreements - which were left vague - would mean the "current trend toward detente will turn into durable peace and the complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula. "The Korean Peninsula, the hottest spot in the globe, will become the cradle of peace and prosperity." |
China manufacturing activity slows as trade war rages Posted: 29 Sep 2018 11:14 PM PDT Chinese factory activity slowed in September, official data showed Sunday, as the Asian giant's trade war with the United States showed no sign of abating. The Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), a key gauge of factory conditions, came in at 50.8 for the month, down from 51.3 in August, the National Bureau of Statistics said. The figure was below the 51.2 reading tipped in a Bloomberg News survey of economists. |
