Five students injured in shooting near Atlanta area high school Posted: 13 May 2014 03:27 PM PDT By David Beasley ATLANTA (Reuters) - Five students were shot near an Atlanta area high school on Tuesday afternoon, although none of the injuries was life threatening, police said. The shooting occurred near Therrell High School in southwest Atlanta, Atlanta Police Department spokesman John Chafee said in an email statement. The high school was briefly locked down, although the shooting did not take place on its grounds, the Atlanta Public Schools system said. Those shot were believed to be students from Therrell High School, it added.

"It's incredibly disappointing that commencement speakers get cancelled because of the controversial nature of their remarks," says Ken Paulson, president of Vanderbilt University's First Amendment Center and dean of the College of Mass Communication at Middle Tennessee State University.

U.S. Senate advances bill for two-year tax breaks renewal Posted: 13 May 2014 09:13 AM PDT The Democratic-led U.S. Senate on Tuesday voted to advance a bill to renew $85 billion of individual and business tax breaks for two years, setting up a confrontation with Republicans in the House of Representatives. The bill includes tax breaks for auto race tracks, wind energy, multinational corporations, Hollywood, school teachers, Puerto Rican rum producers, college tuition and more.

Smith College Protestors Force IMF Head to Withdraw As Commencement Keynote Posted: 13 May 2014 08:45 AM PDT It seemed the perfect choice: one of the most powerful women in the world chosen as commencement speaker for a college founded in 1871 with the goal of proving women were the equal of men. But Christine Lagarde is out as the planned 2014 commencement speaker at Smith College, withdrawing after a protest campaign that labeled the organization she leads, the International Monetary Fund, as a supporter of economic policies that oppress and abuse women. Smith College President Kathleen McCartney on Monday lamented that a tiny but vocal "minority have prevailed." In a telephone interview, she voiced respect for the student activists but disagreed with their opposition. McCartney told The Fiscal Times that the overwhelming majority of the Smith community was disappointed.
