Posted: 20 Jun 2018 08:44 AM PDT It costs more than double the amount to detain children separated from their families at the US-Mexico border in tent cities than keeping the whole family together, a new report has revealed. It costs $775 (£586) per night, per child, to be detained in the new tent cities facilities, NBC News reported, citing Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) officials. The higher costs for the newly-separated children are due to new construction of these tent cities, air conditioning for the facilities, certified medical workers, labour for the facilities, food, water, and other supplies which had to be procured quickly. |

War-ravaged South Sudan at a glance Posted: 19 Jun 2018 10:46 PM PDT South Sudan, the world's newest country, has been mired in a devastating civil war for more than four years, with tens of thousands of people killed, nearly four million displaced and its economy in ruins. War broke out when President Salva Kiir accused his former deputy Riek Machar of plotting a coup just two years after the country gained independence from Sudan in 2011. Before independence, the south of Sudan was ravaged by two civil wars (1956-1972 and 1983-2005) that pitted mainly Christian and animist insurgents in the south against Khartoum's Arab-dominated government. |

In Turkish election, democracy itself is at stake Posted: 19 Jun 2018 09:11 AM PDT It's a week before an election, and the firebrand candidate takes the podium to speak to a small, private crowd of loyal supporters. Turkey is holding snap elections on June 24, and in the run-up, Erdoğan's stump speeches have grown more and more Trumpian. Like the American president, Erdoğan fashions himself as populist representative of the common man facing down an array of corrupt elites. |

China says it regrets U.S. quitting U.N. rights council Posted: 20 Jun 2018 01:52 AM PDT China expressed regret on Wednesday over a U.S. decision to withdraw from the U.N. Human Rights Council, with state media saying the image of the United States as a defender of rights was "on the verge of collapse". U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley announced the decision to pull out of the council on Tuesday over what she said was chronic bias against Israel and a lack of reform. Rights group have criticized the decision as sending a message that the United States was turning a blind eye to abuses across the world. |

Malaysia murder case linked to Najib 'may be re-opened' Posted: 19 Jun 2018 04:54 AM PDT A probe into the sensational murder of a young woman linked to Malaysia's ousted leader could be re-opened, a lawyer said Tuesday, after a meeting between the victim's father and the attorney-general. Altantuya Shaariibuu was shot dead and her body blown up with military-grade plastic explosives near Kuala Lumpur in 2006. The Mongolian's murder was the most shocking aspect in a scandal involving allegations that an associate of recently ousted premier Najib Razak arranged huge kickbacks for the purchase of French submarines in 2002. |

Syria strike blamed on Israel kills 22 Iraqi fighters Posted: 18 Jun 2018 06:36 PM PDT More than 20 fighters from an Iraqi paramilitary force key to the battle against the Islamic State group were killed in an eastern Syria air raid the United States linked to Israel. The bombing raid hit Al-Hari, a town controlled by regional militias fighting in Syria's complex seven-year war alongside President Bashar al-Assad's forces. Both Syrian authorities and Iraqi forces pointed the finger at the US-led coalition, which denied it was involved in Sunday night's attack. |
