Illinois Senate OKs school funding revamp with boost for Chicago Posted: 10 May 2016 03:36 PM PDT Illinois' Democrat-controlled Senate on Tuesday passed a bill to revamp the way the state funds K-12 public schools over the objections of Republicans, who labeled it a bailout for the cash-strapped Chicago Public Schools (CPS). The bill's sponsor, Democratic Senator Andy Manar, said it was time to rip up Illinois' nearly 20-year-old funding formula, replacing it with one that ensures school districts with high percentages of poor students get an adequate and equitable share of state money. Per-student funding in Illinois can range from $6,000 to $30,000, largely depending on a district's local property tax base, according to Manar. |
Teacher surprises students with inspiring desk messages on exam day Posted: 10 May 2016 03:30 PM PDT A teacher's ability to motivate can start with a few simple words doodled on a desk. Chandni Langford is a fifth grade teacher in the Woodbury school system in New Jersey. Langford's students were nervous about upcoming high-stakes exams that started on Monday, and last for seven days. To alleviate her students' fears, the teacher got creative. "A lot of my kids were nervous that if they don't pass this test with good scores they won't go to the next grade. They feel a lot of anxiety about that," Langford told Philly.com . "I thought this would be a cute thing for them to walk into." Langford also said she got the idea from a fellow teacher on Pinterest. She decided to connect the messages with the "growth mindset" learning strategy she has been using with her 19 students since January. The series of desk photos have been shared more than 18,000 times since they were posted. Most importantly, however, is the way Langford's students have reacted to the gesture. "When I read the message, my fear went away," her student Julissa told Philly.com . "I knew I could actually do it." 7 Ideal Summer Job Options for Teachers Posted: 10 May 2016 10:42 AM PDT Others are frantically looking for ways to supplement their teacher salaries to keep that savings account well-funded. "I became even more grateful for the opportunity to teach in the summers early in my career," says Jessica Bufkin, a Dallas-based editor for the personal finance site PTMoney.com, who taught English to junior high students for 13 years. Bufkin would pick up at least one semester of summer school each season, for a common reason. |
