On her return, Murad went to see her house and emerged clutching some clothing left there since 2014. A Yazidi fighter said it belonged to Murad's mother, who was killed during the purge because she was considered too old to be taken as a slave. |

The software was discovered on the carmaker's diesel A7 and A8 sedans with V6 and V8 motors, built between 2009 and 2013, Dobrindt told Germany's DPA news agency. DPA said it was the first time that rigged Audis had been found in Germany. |

Ivanka Trump tweets support for LGBTQ people, and you can guess what happens next Posted: 01 Jun 2017 08:16 PM PDT Oh, Ivanka. With June being Pride Month, Ivanka Trump hopped back on to Twitter Thursday evening to voice her support for the LGBTQ community. Feel free to read that again. SEE ALSO: Trump flips the middle finger to the world, your future "This month we celebrate and honor the #LGBTQ community," she wrote. Or that questions concerning the LGBTQ community will be struck off the 2020 U.S. Census and a survey which helps decide funding for groups that support the elderly. Let's not get started about Mike Pence. So if there's anyone that Ivanka should be telling about her support for the LGBTQ community, it's not the public. Here’s a gorgeous iPhone 8 concept that Apple could never make Posted: 01 Jun 2017 07:18 AM PDT The iPhone 8 continues to be one of the hottest topics in the tech world, and today we've got another interesting concept to look at, one that proposes an amazing design. But sadly, it's probably this new concept iPhone 8 features a design that Apple will likely never actually make. Concocted by designer David Chapman as the "iPhone Pro," this iPhone 8 device looks very much like an iPhone 7. If it were not for the all-screen design and the rear camera, you might think this is indeed an iPhone 7 variation. And that's precisely what makes this iPhone 8 concept unlikely. https://twitter.com/DaveChap/status/870024536468500480 Sure, Apple will adopt an all-screen design for the iPhone 8, and eliminate the physical home button in the process. And sure, the phone will have a vertical dual camera on the back. But what Chapman gets wrong here based on the many iPhone 8 rumors and leaks from reputable sources, is the phone's rear design. The iPhone 8 is expected to support wireless charging, a first for Apple. That means the phone's shell can't be made out of metal. All reports do say the phone will feature a glass sandwich design consisting of a stainless steel chassis that houses all the internal components, sandwiched between two sheets of 2.5D glass. https://twitter.com/DaveChap/status/869928460247908352 With metal out of the picture, those hideous antenna bands will also disappear, and they're likely to be replaced with tiny antenna bands on the edges, similar to what Apple did with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 — those iPhones also had a glass sandwich design. There are other details in Chapman's designs that do not jibe with more recent rumors. The camera flash should be placed between the two rear cameras, the power button should be slightly longer, and the front-facing camera and sensors should "protrude" into the top side of the display. At least there's no fingerprint sensor on the back, though. As for the screen design Chapman imagines, we're looking at a display that resembles the LG G6 and the Galaxy S8, although the top and bottom bezels appear to be even smaller. |
In Hebron, 'miracle' for settlers ended 'golden age' for Palestinians Posted: 01 Jun 2017 08:43 PM PDT Its Old City is in constant lockdown, its holy site where the biblical Abraham may have been buried guarded by Israeli soldiers at checkpoints. Fifty years after the Six-Day War, the ancient city of Hebron, set in the hills of the southern West Bank, has become perhaps the starkest symbol of Israel's occupation. Israeli soldiers keep a close watch, and parts of the city are off limits to Palestinians. |

Obama condemns Trump for 'rejecting the future' by exiting Paris deal Posted: 01 Jun 2017 02:10 PM PDT Obama said cities and businesses 'will step up and do even more to lead the way, and help protect for future generations the one planet we've got'. Barack Obama led condemnation of his successor's decision to withdraw from the landmark Paris climate accord, which the former president's administration painstakingly negotiated over the course of several years. In a statement released just before Donald Trump officially announced that the US would remove itself from the deal, Obama said the administration had joined "a small handful of nations that reject the future". |
Taliban warns against retaliation over Kabul attack Posted: 01 Jun 2017 10:47 AM PDT By Sayed Hassib and Samar Zwak KABUL (Reuters) - The Taliban warned the Afghan government on Thursday against harming any of their prisoners after reports that President Ashraf Ghani would order the execution of 11 militants on death row in revenge for the devastating truck bomb attack in Kabul. Ghani's fragile and divided government has come under increasing pressure over its failure to provide security following a series of high-profile attacks that have killed hundreds of soldiers and civilians so far this year. One of the worst such attacks since the U.S.-led campaign to oust the Taliban in 2001, it was only the latest in a grim series that has killed thousands of civilians over the years. |

Philippine crisis deepens as air strike on rebels accidentally kills 11 soldiers Posted: 01 Jun 2017 07:37 AM PDT By Tom Allard and Neil Jerome Morales MARAWI/MANILA (Reuters) - An air strike on Islamist rebels holed up in a southern Philippine city has killed 11 government troops, the armed forces said on Thursday, in a major blow for a military struggling to end its biggest internal security crisis in years. The accident happened on Wednesday when one of two planes bombing rebel positions missed its target in the heart of Marawi City, where ground troops took on pro-Islamic State militants in a tenth day of fierce street battles. If you’re hoping humans find evidence of life on Mars, scientists have some very good news Posted: 01 Jun 2017 08:04 PM PDT Despite all of the breathtaking photos, video, observations, and scientific discoveries that have happened so far on Mars — thanks to probes, rovers, and the like — there's one burning question that remains completely unanswered: was there ever life there? We've found a wealth of minerals, evidence of water, and even the telltale signs of riverbeds and mud, but evidence of life remains illusive. A new report co-led by Roger Wiens of the Los Alamos National Laboratory doesn't confirm that living organisms took root on the red planet, but it does paint a picture that seems very optimistic. Drawing on various readings from the Curiosity rover, researchers have determined that a lake once existed in Mars' Gale Crater, and the body of water had some extremely interesting characteristics. Rather than carrying a uniform density of oxygen, the water in the ancient lake held dramatically different levels of oxygen depending on the location and time. "We're learning that in parts of the lake and at certain times, the water carried more oxygen," Wiens says. "This matters because it affects what minerals are deposited in the sediments, and also because oxygen is important for life. But we have to remember that at the time of Gale Lake, life on our planet had not yet adapted to using oxygen—photosynthesis had not yet been invented. Instead, the oxidation state of certain elements like manganese or iron may have been more important for life, if it ever existed on Mars. These oxidation states would be controlled by the dissolved oxygen content of the water." In short, the variety of conditions available in the lake at various times during its history could have offered ideal conditions for life to take hold, and that's pretty huge news if you're hoping to one day hear that humans have found evidence that martian life was real. |

Trump administration 'spying on journalists to find out who is leaking information' Posted: 01 Jun 2017 08:57 AM PDT Donald Trump's administration is spying on journalists who have been handed leaked information, it has been claimed. The removal of Brigadier-General Nixon Fortes as commander of the army brigade in Marawi City and his replacement by his deputy, Colonel Generoso Ponio, was not related to the battle that has raged in the city, the spokesman said. "That's not the reason," spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Ray Tiongson said when asked if Fortes' replacement was triggered by the course of the conflict. |

Pfizer defeats appeals linking Zoloft to birth defects Posted: 02 Jun 2017 11:40 AM PDT Pfizer Inc on Friday defeated an effort to revive more than 300 lawsuits alleging that its antidepressant Zoloft causes cardiac birth defects in children when taken by women during early pregnancy. A panel of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia upheld the April 2016 dismissal of the cases by a lower court judge, who said the plaintiffs had not shown a plausible scientific link between Zoloft and the birth defects. The plaintiffs accused New York-based Pfizer of playing down the risks to boost sales of Zoloft, which topped $3 billion annually before sales of generic versions began in 2006. |
