Boston suburbs gas pipeline accident biggest since 2010 Posted: 14 Sep 2018 02:01 PM PDT Some 8,000 people in Boston's suburbs had little hope of returning home soon as investigators scrambled on Friday to find out the cause of dozens of gas explosions that destroyed scores of homes in the biggest such accident in nearly a decade. The blasts on Thursday killed one person and left more than a dozen injured in Andover, North Andover and Lawrence - North of Boston - and stranded more than 18,000 homes and businesses without power, according to emergency officials. Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker declared a state of emergency for the area while expressing frustration with the utility company whose gas pipeline exploded. |

Turkey says Erdogan will meet Putin on Monday for Syria talks Posted: 14 Sep 2018 02:20 AM PDT Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Monday, officials said, amid rising international concern over a looming Syrian government assault on a rebel-held province bordering Turkey. "President Erdogan will meet with Mr Putin on Monday," Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told a televised press conference on Friday. Russia-backed forces of the Syrian regime have massed around the Idlib province in recent weeks, sparking fears of an imminent air and ground attack to retake the last major opposition bastion. |

Costco Wholesale Corporation (COST) Is a Victim of Its Own Success Posted: 14 Sep 2018 10:19 AM PDT After reporting consistent earnings and same-store sales beats throughout 2018 that have sent its stock up more than 30 percent on the year to new all-time highs, Costco Wholesale Corporation (NYSE: COST) may finally be becoming a victim of its own success. Wells Fargo analyst Edward Kelly downgraded COST stock from "outperform" to "market perform" and says it will be difficult for Costco to impress the market at this point. Kelly says Costco's performance has been stellar in recent quarters, but it's unlikely the company will continue to deliver its impressive sales growth in 2019. |

The area is served by the Columbia Gas of Massachusetts unit of NiSource, whose shares fell 11.7 percent to close at $24.79 on Friday. In an afternoon news conference officials including Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker criticized Columbia Gas for what they said was an inadequate response to the explosions. |
U.S. sanctions Russian, Chinese tech firms over funds for North Korea Posted: 14 Sep 2018 12:56 AM PDT WASHINGTON/SEOUL (Reuters) - The United States on Thursday imposed sanctions on a China-based tech firm, its North Korean CEO and a Russian subsidiary, accusing them of moving illicit funding to North Korea in violation of U.S. sanctions. The new sanctions target China-based Yanbian Silverstar Network Technology Co, its North Korean chief executive Jong Song Hwa, and a Russian-based sister company, Volasys Silver Star, the U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement. "These actions are intended to stop the flow of illicit revenue to North Korea from overseas information technology workers disguising their true identities and hiding behind front companies, aliases, and third-party nationals," Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement. |

Asian markets build on trade talks rally, Turkish lira holds up Posted: 14 Sep 2018 01:19 AM PDT Asian markets extended their gains Friday on hopes for China-US trade talks, while Turkey's lira held up after a shock hike in the country's interest rate and a dip in US inflation. After a tumultuous start to the month, investors finally had something to smile about Thursday after US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin invited Chinese officials for fresh talks to avert an all-out trade war. The news provided some much-needed support, which was improved on later in the day with data showing US consumer price inflation slid in August, easing pressure on the Federal Reserve to tighten borrowing costs. |

Poland says it will block any EU sanctions against Hungary Posted: 14 Sep 2018 09:31 AM PDT (The Sept. 13 story fixes spelling of 'flouting' in lead) WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland, the biggest former communist country in the European Union, said it will oppose any sanctions imposed by the bloc on fellow member Hungary, accused of flouting EU rules on democracy. "Every country has its sovereign right to make internal reforms it deems appropriate," Poland's foreign ministry said in a statement late on Wednesday. "Actions aimed against member states serve only deepening divides in the EU, increasing citizens' current lack of confidence to European institutions." The European Parliament voted on Wednesday to sanction Hungary for neglecting norms on democracy, civil rights and corruption in a first bid to launch the punitive process of the EU treaty's Article 7. |

Who is Jack Brooksbank, the wine merchant fiancé of Princess Eugenie? Posted: 14 Sep 2018 12:49 AM PDT He was working as a waiter in a cocktail bar when he met her. But it was no rags to riches story for Jack Brooksbank, who is set to marry Princess Eugenie in October. Educated at Stowe School in Buckingham, where boarding fees are currently almost £12,000 per term, Brooksbank, 31, is a descendant of the Brooksbank baronets and reportedly a distant cousin of Eugenie's. (Her mother, the Duchess of York, is the great-great-granddaughter of Lady Julia Coke, who is the daughter of Jack's great-great-grandfather, Thomas Coke.) Son of George Brooksbank, 68, a chartered accountant and company director, and his wife Nicola, 64, Jack has a younger brother called Thomas, 29 - a possible candidate for best man. Since 2001, the family address has been an apartment in a gated period conversion in Wandsworth, not far from Battersea Park. Princess Eugenie's royal wedding | Read more Brooksbank was introduced to Eugenie, the younger daughter of Prince Andrew, during a ski holiday in Verbier, Switzerland and the couple have been together for more than six years. Back then, Eugenie was studying English literature, history of art and politics at Newcastle University and Brooksbank is said to have been waiting tables and serving drinks at Devonshire Terrace, a bar and restaurant near Liverpool Street in London. Having left school in the mid-noughties, he had given university a miss, choosing instead to launch himself straight into a career in hospitality. He went on to work at Chelsea's Admiral Codrington pub, from where he was poached by businessman and nightclub owner Piers Adam and employed by the Markham Inn nearby. "At the Markham Inn, I had to deal with lots of strange people, and everyone was demanding," he once said of his experience there. "I also got to know the locals, which I loved." These included Prince Harry and his close friend Guy Pelly who, according to Tatler, "pulled him into the Mahiki set". Then, in August 2016, he set up his own company, Jack Brooksbank Limited, a wine wholesaler. He is described by those who know him as "kind and selfless" and a perfect match for Eugenie. Jacobi Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe, a friend of the couple, tells the Telegraph: "Never have I known a couple with so much lust for life, who light up every room they enter with joy, laughter and unprecedented warmth. I'm sure you'll hear this a lot but Jack possesses one of the most infectious laughs you'll hear, and you will hear it!! They float with laughter and love .. although a boat helps! #engagement#eugieandjack@TheDukeOfYork@yorkiebeapic.twitter.com/Q7ezWecUsa— Sarah Ferguson (@SarahTheDuchess) January 22, 2018 I always say that the river flows well to it's destiny because of the guidance of a solid rock #engagement#eugieandjack@TheDukeOfYork@TheDukeOfYorkpic.twitter.com/hvCnnOwZpo— Sarah Ferguson (@SarahTheDuchess) January 22, 2018 "It has been a pleasure watching their relationship grow over the years, two people who enjoy each other's company so much. They are two of the kindest, [most] selfless and sensitive people I know. In that they have met their match." But Brooksbank hasn't entirely avoided scandal. In 2013, a tabloid newspaper reported that explicit photographs of him touching the naked breasts of a stripper while blindfolded and covered in candle wax during his 21st birthday celebrations had been leaked online. The pictures were quickly removed from the internet after they had been discovered. Newsletter Promotion - Royal Appointment - in article |
Pompeo slams Kerry for 'inappropriate' meetings with Iran officials Posted: 14 Sep 2018 03:29 PM PDT "What Secretary Kerry has done is unseemly and unprecedented," Pompeo told a news conference, adding that he "ought not to engage in that kind of behavior. It's inconsistent with what the foreign policy of the United States is, as directed by this president. It is beyond inappropriate." Pompeo's sharp criticism of Kerry comes a day after President Donald Trump accused the former secretary of state of "illegal" meetings on Iran in a late-night tweet. |

Optimism trumps despair at climate summit Posted: 14 Sep 2018 04:56 PM PDT Mayors, governors, entrepreneurs, CEOs, investors and celebrities delivered a double-edged message Friday at the close of a climate summit in San Francisco: global warming is making the planet unliveable -- but we know how to fix it. "We are using the sky as an open sewer, it's insane," former US vice president Al Gore told the conference, noting that humanity belches 110 million tons of heat-trapping pollution into the atmosphere every day. |

Corrected: Uber drivers in Denmark must pay fine for every ride, supreme court rules Posted: 14 Sep 2018 12:29 AM PDT The Danish supreme court on Thursday ratified fines given to four Uber drivers for operating illegally, paving the way for similar fines on a further 1,500 drivers. The four taxi drivers, one of whom was fined 486,500 Danish crowns ($78,060), were charged with failing to have permits and for violating a law introduced to combat Uber which imposed extra rules on taxis operating in Denmark. After launching its service in Denmark in 2014, Uber Technologies Inc was criticised by taxi driver unions, companies and politicians who said the company posed unfair competition by not meeting legal standards required for established taxi firms. |

Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu has described the week-long operation, which involves nearly 300,000 soldiers, 36,000 vehicles, 1,000 planes and 80 warships, as Russia's biggest-ever war games. |
