Russia says it sent 'specialists' to Venezuela, rebuffs Trump Posted: 28 Mar 2019 08:23 AM PDT Trump said on Wednesday that "all options" were open to make Russia pull troops out of Venezuela after two Russian air force planes landed outside Caracas on Saturday carrying nearly 100 Russian troops, according to media reports. As Venezuela has descended into political turmoil this year, Russia has emerged as a staunch backer of President Nicolas Maduro while the United States backs the country's opposition and has imposed sanctions. Venezuela's military attache in Moscow said on Thursday Russia had sent "servicemen" to Venezuela, but that they would not take part in military operations, Interfax news agency reported. |

Apple, Qualcomm gird for next phase of patent battle after mixed U.S. rulings Posted: 26 Mar 2019 06:30 PM PDT The International Trade Commission, a government agency empowered to hear disputes over patented technology, issued a final ruling in one case that went in Apple's favor while an ITC administrative judge made a non-binding recommendation that supported Qualcomm in another. In both cases Qualcomm Inc sought to have imports of Apple Inc iPhone 7, 8 and X models containing chips made by Intel Corp banned. Because iPhones are made overseas, banning imports would choke Apple's sales of the phones in the United States. |
Saudi must make Khashoggi trials public: UN expert Posted: 28 Mar 2019 09:53 AM PDT A UN human rights expert said Thursday that Saudi Arabia needed to hold public trials for those accused of murdering journalist Jamal Khashoggi in order for the process to be credible. "Contrary to Saudi Arabia assertions, these are not internal, domestic matters," said Agnes Callamard, the United Nations special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions. The kingdom "is grievously mistaken if it believes that these proceedings, as currently constituted, will satisfy the international community," she added in a statement. |

Jury begins deliberations in Roundup trial phase 2 Posted: 27 Mar 2019 01:13 AM PDT San Francisco (AFP) - "Monsanto knew" its weedkiller Roundup was carcinogenic yet sold it anyway, the lawyer for an American retiree said on the last day of a trial to determine the agriculture giant's culpability for his cancer. The company's attorney meanwhile denied the allegations and accused Monsanto's critics of concocting a conspiracy, as arguments drew to a close and the jury began its deliberations midday on Tuesday. The same San Francisco jury previously found that a quarter century exposure to Roundup, whose principal ingredient is controversial chemical glyphosate, was a "substantial factor" in giving 70-year-old Edwin Hardeman non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. |
Five migrants arrested after Maltese special forces raid brings end to high seas hijack drama Posted: 27 Mar 2019 11:15 PM PDT Five migrants who allegedly led the hijacking of a tanker in the Mediterranean to avoid being returned to Libya were arrested in Malta on Thursday after special forces stormed the vessel to take back control. The five men, some of whom were led off the merchant vessel in plastic handcuffs, were among 108 asylum seekers who were rescued by the El Hiblu 1 tanker north of Libya on Tuesday. The tanker was ordered by Libyan authorities to take the migrants to Tripoli, but they allegedly subjected the 12-man crew to physical threats and forced the vessel to sail north instead, towards Europe. Migrants in Libya are held in horrific conditions and are often subjected to beatings, torture and rape, according to the UN and humanitarian agencies. A migrant suspected of hijacking the ship is detained in Valletta, Malta Credit: Reuters The Maltese military intervened in the early hours of Thursday, with armed commandoes boarding the tanker in an operation that involved Maltese naval vessels and helicopters. Maltese authorities established communications with the captain of the 170ft-long oil tanker when it was about 30 nautical miles away from Malta and proceeding towards the island. "The captain repeatedly stated that he was not in control of the vessel and that he and his crew were being forced and threatened by a number of migrants to proceed to Malta," the authorities said. The tanker was escorted by navy vessels to Valletta, Malta's capital, where the five alleged ringleaders were arrested and taken away for questioning. They are likely to be charged with "illegally forcing the captain of the ship to hand over control through coercive action and changing its course," Maltese government sources said. No one was injured during the high seas drama, but the outnumbered crew said they were threatened with assault unless they followed orders. The rescued migrants consisted of 77 men, 19 women and 12 children. "We do not shirk responsibility, despite our size. We will now follow all international rules accordingly," said Joseph Muscat, Malta's prime minister. Matteo Salvini, the hardline deputy prime minister of Italy, had called the migrants "pirates" and vowed that they would not be allowed to land on Italian soil. Police buses await migrants who arrived on the 'hijacked' merchant ship Credit: DARRIN ZAMMIT LUPI/REUTERS "Immigration is managed by criminals and should be blocked by any legal means necessary," he said. Sea-Eye, a German migrant rescue NGO, said one of its vessels had overheard radio messages between a European military aircraft and the captain of the tanker. "The captain of the ship…said unequivocally on the radio that people are very upset and do not want to be brought back to Libya," Sea-Eye said. Vincent Cochetel, the UN refugee agency's special envoy for the central Mediterranean, said that the safety of merchant ship crews was as important as that of "human beings fleeing a hellish situation and not wanting to return there." A Maltese special forces soldier guards a group of migrants Credit: DARRIN ZAMMIT LUPI/REUTERS Italy's populist coalition closed its ports to rescued migrants last summer, leading to a number of stand-offs with other EU countries over boatloads of rescued migrants. There has been a sharp drop in the number of asylum seekers crossing the Mediterranean, as the EU-trained Libyan coast guard intercepts them and returns them to the Libyan coast. Humanitarian organisations said the migrants should not be characterised as criminals or "pirates" because they were trying to avoid returning to a hellish existence in Libya. "It is entirely legitimate for people found in distress at sea to reject being returned to Libya, the very place they know they will only continue to suffer the gravest of violations of their rights and the most degrading treatment," said Johannes Bayer, the chairman of Sea-Watch. Matteo Salvini, the Italian interior minister and deputy prime minister Credit: AFP EU countries such as Italy and Malta "alert the Libyan coast guard when refugees and migrants are spotted at sea so they can be taken back to Libya, despite knowing that people there are arbitrarily detained and exposed to widespread torture, rape, killings and exploitation," said Matteo de Bellis, an expert on migrants for Amnesty International. In November, dozens of migrants seized control of a container ship that had picked them up at sea, barricading themselves inside and refusing to disembark in the Libyan port of Misrata. After 10 days, Libyan authorities forcibly removed them from the ship and placed them in a detention centre. NASA explains why it didn’t have enough space suits for an all-female spacewalk Posted: 27 Mar 2019 04:06 PM PDT This was supposed to be a history-making week for NASA, with the first all-female spacewalk originally planned to take place on Friday. Unfortunately, a last-second swap has led to one of the expected participants, Anne McClain, being replaced with fellow ISS inhabitant Nick Hague.NASA's explanation was that McClain wouldn't have a space suit available to her for the spacewalk due to sizing, since Christina Koch will be wearing the medium-sized suit that McClain wore during her previous spacewalk last week. This left a lot of people scratching their heads. After all, NASA says there's two of every size of space suit on board the ISS, so why can't both McClain and Koch wear the same sized suits? Speaking with CNN, NASA representatives offered a deeper explanation. The lengthy discussion reveals some of the quirks of life aboard the International Space Station, as well as some insight into how human bodies change once they are in space. While still back on Earth, McClain had trained in both the large and medium sized suits. Originally, NASA was planning on having McClain wear the larger sized suit while Koch would wear the medium rig. However, during McClain's recent spacewalk it became clear that the medium sized suit fit her body better in space, which left NASA in a bit of a pickle.NASA has two of each size of space suit on the ISS, but only one of them is fully outfitted and ready to use at any given time. The other suits, which are considered backups, can't be pulled out and used immediately, and they must be prepped for use in space.NASA's Brandi Dean explains it like this:> We do our best to anticipate the spacesuit sizes that each astronaut will need, based on the spacesuit size they wore in training on the ground, and in some cases (including Anne McClain's) astronauts train in multiple sizes. However, individuals' sizing needs may change when they are on orbit, in response to the changes living in microgravity can bring about in a body. In addition, no one training environment can fully simulate performing a spacewalk in microgravity, and an individual may find that their sizing preferences change in space.Training in various space suits on Earth can't adequately predict what suit will fit you better in space, and in this case the time crunch between the two spacewalks has forced NASA to replace McClain with Hague. It's obviously a bummer for McClain, but nobody wants to be floating around in space in a suit that doesn't fit. |

Easter 2019: Forbidden eggs, Eostre and how the date is decided Posted: 28 Mar 2019 02:33 AM PDT Easter weekend is fast approaching with all the fondant-filled Creme Eggs, sticky hot cross buns and sugar-coated Mini Eggs our stretchiest waistbands can withstand. Of course, the Christian festival is far more than its associated confectionery. Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ who, according to the New Testament, died on the cross on Good Friday and came back to life three days later. His resurrection is celebrated on Easter Sunday, which also marks the end of Lent's 40-day period of fasting. From the origins of the Easter bunny to the celebrations' ever-changing dates, here is your essential guide to the holiday. Jump to it, bunny: Your complete guide to Easter decorations When is Easter 2019? This year, Good Friday falls on April 19, Easter Sunday on April 21 and Easter Monday on April 22 - three weeks later than they did last year. While the holiday is a movable feast, it always falls somewhere between March 21 and April 25 every year. It is calculated as the first Sunday after the first full moon following the first day of spring. The full moon is known as the Paschal (Passover) Full Moon. Methods for calculating Easter are fiendishly complicated and a uniquely baffling synthesis of mathematics, astronomy and theology. As Christians believe Jesus was crucified during the Jewish Passover festival, Easter is celebrated around the same time. Nonetheless, different Christian groups were already marking it on separate dates by the end of the 2nd Century. Q&A; | Maundy Thursday These date-led disagreements even set the course of history for the British Isles at the Synod of Whitby in 664AD when the preferred date of the Roman - rather than the Celtic - church became the standard. The decision is said to have catapulted Britain into the European sphere of influence. Though disputes over Easter's exact timing have been used as proxies for deeper power struggles for centuries, most now accept that it falls on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox - which the Church approximated as March 21. This year, Easter Sunday falls on April 21, the longest stretch following March 21's full moon – which falls on a Sunday. In 2016, the Archbishop of Canterbury suggested Easter should fall on the same Sunday every year and the Most Rev Justin Welby said Anglican leaders would join discussions with other church leaders to fix the date for the first time, theoretically putting an end to almost 2,000 years of controversy. The 10 best destinations for Easter sun What do eggs have to do with Easter? Eggs illustrate new life, just as Jesus began his new life on Easter Sunday after the miracle of his resurrection. When eggs are cracked open they are said to symbolise an empty tomb. Originally, eating eggs was forbidden in the week leading up to Easter (known as Holy Week). They were saved and decorated in the run-up to the celebration and given to children as gifts. Sometimes they were coloured red, in recognition of the blood sacrificed by Jesus when he was crucified. Green was also used to symbolise spring re-growth after the winter. The first chocolate eggs appeared in France and Germany during the 19th century. As chocolate-making techniques improved, the Easter egg as we know it was popularised. Where does the Easter Bunny fit in to all of this? Rabbits and hares have been associated with spring for hundreds of years. It is thought that the Anglo-Saxon Goddess of Spring, Eostre – who many believe the Christian event is named after – had a hare as her companion, symbolising fertility and rebirth. It's hardly surprising that rabbits and hares have become associated with fertility as they are both prolific breeders and regularly give birth to large litters in early spring. The legend of the Easter Bunny is thought to have originated among German Lutherans, where the 'Easter Hare' judged whether children had been good or bad in the run-up to Easter. Easter bunnies and eggs are symbols of spring and fertility. Over time it has been incorporated into Christian celebrations, becoming especially popular in Britain during the 19th century. Many children believe that the Easter Bunny lays and hides baskets of coloured eggs, sweets and toys in their homes or around the garden the night before Easter Sunday – much like Father Christmas delivering gifts on Christmas Eve. This has given rise to the tradition of the Easter egg hunt which is still popular among children today. Why do we eat hot cross buns? A hot cross bun is a spiced, sweet bun marked with a cross on top. They are traditionally eaten on Good Friday as the cross represents the crucifixion of Jesus, while the spices are said to remind Christians of the spices put on his body. Hot cross buns appeared in the Oxford English Dictionary in 1733 but they are believed to have existed long before. Enriched, sweetened bread dough dates back to the Romans. Long before Christianity, loaves and buns were baked with symbols on them, one of which was a cross. Small, spiced cakes were also baked to honour the Saxon goddess Eoestre and celebrate spring, but it was the Tudors who began to link the spiced currant buns we know today with feast days, celebrations and - eventually - Lent. Delicious recipes to cook this Easter Wild garlic and parsley soup Jose Pizarro's roast rack of lamb with braised peas and lemon-thyme salsa Hot cross bun panna cotta Paul Hollywood's Easter simnel cake How is Easter celebrated around the world? In many central and eastern European countries decorating eggs with beautiful patterns is especially popular. In Switzerland, Easter eggs are delivered by a cuckoo and, in some areas of Germany, a fox. The egg-giving tradition arrived in the United States in the 18th century via protestant German immigrants in the Pennsylvania Dutch area. Traditional Easter foods from around the world On Easter Monday, the President of the United States holds an annual Easter egg roll on the lawn of the White House for young children. In the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland it is a day of remembrance for the men and women who died in the Easter Rising which began on Easter Monday 1916. |
