This Picture Is a Clue on How China Plans to Dominate the South China Sea Posted: 04 May 2018 06:22 AM PDT The news comes less than a month after The Wall Street Journal reported that "military jamming equipment" had been installed on the Spratly Islands, one of the locations also identified in the report this week. "This should be seen as China crossing an important threshold. Missile platforms present a clear offensive threat," Gregory Poling, a fellow at the Washington DC-based Center for Strategic and International Studies told CNBC. |
Passengers compare scene inside Caribbean cruise ship to the Titanic after 50 rooms were flooded Posted: 05 May 2018 11:56 AM PDT The scene on board a cruise ship in the Caribbean drew comparisons to the Titanic as 50 staterooms on Deck 9 were flooded. A breach in the Carnival Dream's fire extinguishing system led to water pouring into a corridor. One passenger said people had been relocated to the spa to sleep on yoga mats. Marla DeAnn Haase, a passenger, posted images of the flooding on Facebook . She wrote: "Um....FB folks.....this is a rare moment of internet connection ....we are flooding on a cruise, we heard the violins and the silverware all came crashing down. What in the world....say a prayer for us all." That was a reference to violinists continuing to play as the Titanic went down. Marla DeAnn Haase, a passenger, posted images of the flooding on Facebook Credit: Marla DeAnn Haase /Facebook One user responded: "What in the Titanic?" Another said: "I literally thought this was a scene from Titanic." Images from the ship showed staff trying to clean up the mess with buckets. Carnival Cruises said passengers affected would get full refunds, a 50 per cent credit for a future cruise, and could be flown home before the end of the cruise. Staff used buckets to clean up the water Credit: Marla DeAnn Haase / Facebook A spokesman said: "Our onboard teams began cleanup immediately related to this clean water from a fire suppression system. "We appreciate our guests' understanding and sincerely apologise. We also thank our crew members for their quick action and hard work." |
Trump offers full embrace of NRA, leaving Parkland pause behind Posted: 04 May 2018 10:23 AM PDT In the aftermath of the Parkland shooting, President Trump offered a series of a proposals to fight gun violence, such as raising the age limit for purchasing assault rifles to 21 and giving law enforcement the authority to confiscate guns from suspicious citizens even if they have not broken any laws. But during the NRA convention on Friday, that version of Trump was a distant memory. |

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupts, forcing hundreds to evacuate Posted: 04 May 2018 03:33 PM PDT By Terray Sylvester PAHOA, Hawaii (Reuters) - The Kilauea volcano spewed fountains of lava into residential areas on Hawaii's Big Island on Friday, forcing hundreds of people, including many retirees, to evacuate their homes, officials said on Friday. The volcano, one of five on the island, began erupting on Thursday after a series of earthquakes over the past week, the U.S. Geological Survey reported on its website. Residents in Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens subdivisions, home to about 1,700 people, were ordered to evacuate after public works officials reported steam and lava burbling up from cracks in the road, the county's Civil Defense said. |

Palestinian president apologises for alleged anti-Semitic remarks Posted: 04 May 2018 03:55 AM PDT Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas apologised Friday for alleged anti-Semitic comments that drew global condemnation. "If people were offended by my statement at the Palestinian National Council, especially people of the Jewish faith, I apologise to them," he said in a statement, days after appearing to suggest Jewish behaviour, including money lending, led to their persecution in Europe. The English-language statement added that he opposed "anti-Semitism in all its forms" and wanted "to reiterate our long held condemnation of the Holocaust, as the most heinous crime in history". |

US warns China over reported missile deployment in South China Sea Posted: 04 May 2018 09:09 AM PDT The White House has issued a warning to China over its increased military presence in the hotly contested South China Sea. "We're well aware of China's militarization of the South China Sea," White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters, adding that there would be "near-term and long-term consequences" for the country. Ms Sanders was responding to reports that China had recently deployed missiles to three of the Spratly Islands – fortified outposts in the South China Sea where Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Brunei have also claimed sovereignty. |
Fresh quakes hit Hawaii after Kilauea volcano erupts, hundreds flee Posted: 04 May 2018 06:10 PM PDT By Terray Sylvester PAHOA, Hawaii (Reuters) - GA series of fresh earthquakes on Friday, including a powerful magnitude 6.9, hit Hawaii's Big Island, where the Kilauea volcano has been spewing fountains of lava into residential areas and forcing hundreds to evacuate. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the strongest tremor at 12:32 p.m. (2332 GMT) measured 6.9, a magnitude capable of causing severe damage. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake, whose epicenter was on the south flank of the volcano, was not large enough to cause a tsunami although it generated sea level changes around the island of up 15.7 inches. |

Hezbollah, allies eye gains in Lebanon vote Posted: 04 May 2018 07:28 AM PDT By Tom Perry and Laila Bassam BEIRUT (Reuters) - The Lebanese Shi'ite group Hezbollah and its allies expect to emerge stronger from a parliamentary election on Sunday, a result that would affirm Iran's regional ascendancy from Tehran to Beirut. The Western-backed Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri, Lebanon's leading Sunni, is meanwhile battling to limit losses he is expected to suffer in the first parliamentary election in nine years. A majority for the Iran-backed Hezbollah and its allies would underline a balance of power already tilted in favor of the heavily armed Shi'ite group, and the diminished role of Saudi Arabia in a country where it once held big sway. |
Critical US-China trade talks end in Beijing Posted: 05 May 2018 12:03 AM PDT China and the US ended the second day of high-stakes trade talks Friday with "big differences", Beijing said, leaving the world's two largest economies on the brink of a trade war that could have knock-on effects on the global economy. "Both sides recognise there are still big differences on some issues and that they need to continue to step up their work to make progress," China said in a statement released by the official Xinhua state news agency. The discussions promised a potential off-ramp for the trade conflict -- US President Donald Trump has threatened to levy new tariffs on $150 billion of Chinese imports while Beijing shot back with a list of $50 billion in targeted US goods. |
Quakes, lava and gas: Hawaii residents flee volcanic threats Posted: 04 May 2018 06:25 PM PDT Many rural residents living on an erupting volcano in Hawaii fled the threat of lava that spewed into the air in bursts of fire and pushed up steam from cracks in roadways Friday, while others tried to get back to their homes. Officials ordered more than 1,700 people out of Big Island neighborhoods near Kilauea volcano's newest lava flow, warning of the dangers of spattering hot rock and high levels of sulfuric gas that could threaten the elderly and people with breathing problems. Officials said highways, buildings and utility lines were not damaged, but residents said they felt strong shaking and more stress as they dealt with the dual environmental phenomena. |

Two sides weigh in on 'constitutional carry' bill Posted: 03 May 2018 06:22 PM PDT If Gov. Fallin signs Senate Bill 1212, gun owners over the age of 21 will be able to skip getting a license to concealed carry. The bill, which is similar to so-called constitutional carry legislation that has been adopted in a dozen other states, authorizes people 21 and older and military personnel who are at least 18 to legally carry a handgun, either openly or concealed, without a state-issued license or permit. "This is a constitutional right so you shouldn't have to pay a fee or a tax to exercise a right," said Don Spencer, with the Oklahoma Second Amendment Association. |
PM May defies expectations in England local elections Posted: 04 May 2018 09:38 PM PDT British Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party fared better than expected in local elections in England as the final results were announced early Saturday, in her first test at the polls since losing her parliamentary majority last year. The centre-right party held on to key London councils despite a big push by Labour, the main opposition, which failed to live up to its own hype. The ruling party also scored highly in areas that voted in favour of Brexit in the 2016 referendum, while losing some ground in more pro-EU heartlands. |
