So Long, Pricey Degree: Grads From These Schools Outearn Ivy Leaguers Posted: 10 Dec 2015 03:58 PM PST Using information from the IRS as well as the Education Department's College Scorecard, a new analysis from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce ranks more than 1,400 four-year colleges and universities across the nation based on the highest earnings of former students. Titled Ranking Your College: Where You Go and What You Make, the analysis is designed as a guide for students and families preparing to make what is, for most, the investment of a lifetime. The groundbreaking analysis of federal and higher education information is ushering in "a new era of data transparency" in higher education, says Jeff Strohl, research director at Georgetown CEW. |

They also are urging the school to rescind the longtime Temple supporter's honorary degree. |
No Child Left Behind Is Dead, So What Happens to Standardized Testing? Posted: 10 Dec 2015 01:44 PM PST On Thursday morning, President Barack Obama signed the Every Student Succeeds Act into law, effectively ending the unpopular, George W. Bush–era legislation that had, since 2002, helped make high-stakes standardized test scores a main focus of public K–12 education. "I want this not just because it's good for the students themselves, the communities involved, and it's good for our economy, but because it really goes to the essence of what we are about as Americans," Obama said at the White House signing ceremony. In particular, it moves away from the use of federally mandated high-stakes testing as the key determinant of the quality of the nation's 100,000 public schools and how well the 50 million kids in the country are learning. Many of those kids were taking more than a dozen standardized tests a year, leaving teachers with little option but to teach to the tests. |
#FlotusBars: Why is Michelle Obama rapping about college? Posted: 10 Dec 2015 12:10 PM PST Michelle Obama has danced with a turnip in the name of promoting healthy eating. The first lady has "mom-danced" with Jimmy Fallon to promote exercise. Now, Mrs. Obama is dropping a beat with Saturday Night Live regular (and frequent Barack Obama impersonator) Jay Pharoah to promote higher education. |
FLOTUS on the track: Michelle Obama makes rap video for college campaign Posted: 10 Dec 2015 03:31 AM PST Fill your head with knowledge," Obama rhymes as comedian Jay Pharoah, known for his Saturday Night Live impression of her husband President Barack Obama, makes a stack of bills rain onto the floor of the White House. The video is a funny and affectionate send-up of the celebrity culture that Obama has said she wants to turn on its head to try to get more American kids thinking about higher education. Obama's "Better Make Room" campaign, targeting students aged 14 to 19, encourages them to go to college by giving them a brush with fame on social media with help from celebrities like Pharoah and basketball great LeBron James. |
Fear grips U.S. Muslim college students after Trump proposal Posted: 09 Dec 2015 08:28 PM PST By Scott Malone CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (Reuters) - At colleges and universities across the United States, Republican White House front-runner Donald Trump's proposal to stop Muslims from entering the country was met with fear and concern - but has so far triggered no large protests. The billionaire real estate developer and television personality's call, which followed last week's massacre in California by a married couple inspired by Islamic State militants, has been harshly criticised by world leaders and members of his own political party. Muslim leaders said this reflects both fear and a desire not to attract even more attention. |
Muslim proposal prompts calls to ban Trump from UK, Israel Posted: 09 Dec 2015 05:37 PM PST By John Whitesides WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Israeli politicians and more than 370,000 Britons urged their governments on Wednesday to bar Donald Trump from their countries after the Republican presidential front-runner said Muslims should be denied entry into the United States. The calls were part of a growing global backlash against Trump's proposal that cut across nationalities and religions, and began to hit the real estate mogul's brand in the Middle East. Although Israeli politicians demanded Trump be blocked from a planned visit, a Dec. 28 meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was still on. |
Training Teachers to Raise Tech Bar Posted: 09 Dec 2015 04:19 PM PST All 28 teachers at P.S./I.S. 217 on Roosevelt Island huddled over computers in a training session on a recent afternoon, trying to make a ball on their screens bounce against a paddle. "We're stuck," said one teacher with a sigh. It was almost the end of their six classes in Computer Science 101 this fall, and several said it would take a lot more practice and guidance for them to bring elements of this unfamiliar world to their students. |
