The Atlantic Politics & Policy Daily: Nothing Says Summer Friday Like Tax Returns Posted: 12 Aug 2016 02:52 PM PDT Today in 5 Lines Hillary Clinton released her 2015 tax returns, as did her running mate Tim Kaine; Donald Trump has refused to make his returns public, citing an IRS audit. Trump said on Twitter that his claim that President Obama founded ISIS was sarcasm. A federal judge blocked an Ohio law meant to defund Planned Parenthood, saying the group would suffer "irreparable injury." Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the odds of Republicans keeping control of the Senate in November are "very dicey" in an address in Louisville, Kentucky. And in Fort Worth, a federal judge heard opening arguments from Texas in a lawsuit between 11 states and the federal government over the Obama administration's directive to accommodate transgender students in public schools. |
Texas, other states ask judge to halt Obama transgender policy Posted: 12 Aug 2016 02:15 PM PDT By Jon Herskovitz FORT WORTH, Texas (Reuters) - Texas and a dozen other states asked a U.S. judge on Friday to block Obama administration guidance to public schools that transgender students must be allowed to use bathrooms of their choice, saying it usurps the authority of school districts nationwide. Gay youth endure violence at higher rate than peers, CDC study shows Posted: 12 Aug 2016 12:48 PM PDT The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released its first study on the risks facing lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) high school students in the United States on Friday. After surveying more than 15,000 students and analyzing data from various school districts across the country from 2015, the CDC found that LGB students in grades 9 through 12 experience sexual and physical violence at a much higher rate than their heterosexual peers. "The majority of sexual minority students cope with the transition from childhood through adolescence to adulthood successfully and become healthy and productive adults," writes the CDC in the report. |

Home Equity Loans Come Back to Haunt Borrowers, Banks Posted: 11 Aug 2016 09:30 AM PDT The bill is coming due for many homeowners on a type of loan that was widely popular in the run-up to the housing bust, causing a rise in delinquencies at banks. More homeowners are missing payments on their home-equity lines of credit, or Helocs, a type of loan that allows borrowers to withdraw cash from their house to pay for renovations, college tuition or almost any other expense. This is becoming an issue now because many borrowers signed up for Helocs in the run-up to the housing bust as home values kept rising. Roughly 840,000 Helocs taken out in 2006 are resetting this year, with principal payments on an additional nearly one million loans expected to hit in 2017. |
