Spanish galleon laden with £13bn in gold found at bottom of Caribbean Sea, 300 years after sinking Posted: 22 May 2018 10:45 AM PDT US scientists found a Spanish galleon laden with treasure worth up to £12.6bn at the bottom of the Caribbean Sea, more than 300 years after it sank. The San Jose, considered the holy grail of shipwrecks, was discovered three years ago off the coast of Colombia but few details were released at the time. The 62-gun, three-masted galleon sank in June 1708, during a battle with British ships in the War of Spanish Succession, with the loss of nearly 600 lives. |

Kilauea volcano erupts on Hawaii's Big Island Posted: 20 May 2018 11:30 PM PDT White plumes of acid and extremely fine shards of glass billowed into the sky over Hawaii as molten rock from Kilauea volcano poured into the ocean, creating yet another hazard from an eruption that began more than two weeks ago. Authorities on Sunday warned the public to stay away from the toxic steam cloud, which is formed by a chemical reaction when lava touches seawater. |

Vietnam says Chinese bombers in disputed South China Sea increase tensions Posted: 21 May 2018 08:15 AM PDT Recent activity by China's strategic bombers in the South China Sea's Paracel Islands seriously violated Vietnam's sovereignty over the disputed territory, Vietnam's foreign ministry said on Monday. China's air force said bombers such as the H-6K had landed and taken off from islands and reefs in the South China Sea as part of training exercises last week. The flights "increase tensions, cause regional instabilities and are not good for maintaining a peaceful, stable and cooperative environment in the East Sea," foreign ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang said in a statement, using the Vietnamese name for the South China Sea. |

'Alien asteroid' may be the oldest object in the solar system Posted: 21 May 2018 12:54 PM PDT By Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An "alien asteroid" that circles the sun in the giant gas planet Jupiter's orbital path, but hurtling in the opposite direction, is the first-known permanent resident of our solar system that astronomers have concluded originated in another star system. Researchers said on Monday a close examination of the asteroid's orbit indicated it formed elsewhere and was captured by gravitational forces when our solar system -- the sun, planets and various other objects -- formed from a swirling cloud of gas and dust about 4.5 billion years ago. "It is a strong candidate for the oldest object in the solar system," said astronomer Fathi Namouni of Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur in France. |

Calls mount for US university president to resign over abuse scandal Posted: 22 May 2018 05:24 PM PDT Two hundred professors at one of California's top universities on Tuesday demanded the resignation of the school's president over a widening sexual abuse scandal involving a campus gynecologist. In their letter to the board of trustees, the professors said Nikias had lost the "moral authority" to lead the private institution or to oversee an investigation into decades of alleged sexual abuse by George Tyndall, a gynecologist formerly employed at the school. |
These were the most-visited theme parks in the world in 2017 Posted: 21 May 2018 05:36 AM PDT Last year, 20.45 million people took a trip to Magic Kingdom, giving it the edge over Disneyland in Anaheim, California and Tokyo Disneyland, which round out the top three spots. On the global scale, however, it was attendance at theme parks across China that helped overall visitor numbers among the major park operators rise nearly nine percent in 2017, notes The Theme Index and Museum Index, published by the Themed Entertainment Association and AECOM. |

China's H-6K: The 'Old' Bomber That Could 'Sink' the U.S. Navy Posted: 21 May 2018 04:56 PM PDT In recent days, the Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) has stepped up its activities in the South China Sea. For the first time ever, the PLAAF has landed Xian H-6K bombers on Woody Island in the disputed Paracel archipelago. The Pentagon decried the Chinese move as a part of "China's continued militarisation of disputed features in the South China Sea," U.S. Pacific Command spokesman Lt. Col. Christopher Logan said. |
Hundreds gather to party at spot where white woman called police on black family’s BBQ Posted: 21 May 2018 07:47 AM PDT Almost a month after a white woman called the police because a group of black people were having a barbecue, hundreds of people have turned up to the same spot to express their solidarity. Video footage of an unidentified woman went viral after she reported the al fresco diners for using a charcoal grill in a non-charcoal area. A friend of the family – Michelle Snider, who is also white – recorded the events at Lake Merritt, in Oakland, California, on 29 April. |

Ukraine tests anti-tank missiles bought from US Posted: 22 May 2018 10:18 AM PDT Ukraine on Tuesday carried out tests of the top of the range Javelin anti-tank missile it recently bought from the United States to boost its arsenal against Russian-backed rebels. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko posted video on Twitter showing a missile being fired and blowing up a target at a military testing ground. "Finally the day has come," Poroshenko said after the test, which he claimed boosted Ukraine's military capabilities as it fights a long-running conflict with Russian-backed separatists in its east. |

Syria's army captures last insurgent area near Damascus Posted: 21 May 2018 09:52 AM PDT By Angus McDowall BEIRUT (Reuters) - The Syrian army has restored control over all areas surrounding the capital Damascus for the first time since early in the seven-year-old war, after pushing Islamic State militants out of a south Damascus pocket, the military said. Pro-Syrian government forces have been battling for weeks to recover al-Hajar al-Aswad district and the adjacent Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp from Islamic State since driving rebels from eastern Ghouta in April. In a televised statement Syria's army high command said al-Hajar al-Aswad and Yarmouk had been cleared of militants. |
