Ohio State latest university to crack down on fraternities after hazing allegations Posted: 17 Nov 2017 02:36 PM PST Ohio State University has become the latest US academic institution to ban on fraternity ceremonies amid concern that alcohol-fuelled initiations are putting students at risk. The move comes within days of Texas State University outlawing all "Greek Activities" - encompassing both fraternities and sororities - following the death of a Phi Kappa Psi inductee. Similar steps have been taken in recent weeks at the University of Michigan and Florida State University. There has been mounting concern at the human toll arising from the incidents of "hazing" at many universities in the US. Such rituals involve pledgees drinking copious amounts of alcohol in a very short time, with at times fatal consequences. In May, 18 students at Penn State were charged with offences including aggravated assault and furnishing alcohol to minors following with the death of Timothy Piazza, a 19-year-old engineering student. It is estimated there have been 40 deaths from hazing at US campuses over the last 10 years. Attorney Stacy Parks Miller, left, announces findings an investigation into the death of Penn State University fraternity pledge Tim Piazza Credit: Abby Drey/AP The Ohio decision was announced by Ryan Lovell, the senior director for sorority and fraternity life at the university, the New York Times reported. "During the period of this directive, your chapter may request to participate in essential activities only," Mr Lovell wrote. Since the start of the academic year, 11 of the university's 37 fraternities have come under investigation, although details of the alleged offences have not been disclosed. |

How the U.S. Military Could Soon Have a New Way to Crush North Korea's ICBMs Posted: 17 Nov 2017 04:28 AM PST A US military upgraded Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle, or EKV, a kinetic-force weapon that slams into its targets, destroyed an intercontinental ballistic missile for the first time during a Missile Defense Agency test of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense system several months ago. The Missile Defense Agency's first-ever successful intercept of an ICBM target using a Ground-based Midcourse Defense system, using the kinetic force of an Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle (EKV) to destroy the target, is paving the way toward advanced future kill vehicles able to discern and attack multiple approaching threats, industry and Pentagon officials said. |

Jared Kushner 'failed to disclose emails from close Putin ally' Posted: 17 Nov 2017 05:53 PM PST An ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin sought to arrange a meeting with Donald Trump's presidential campaign on the sidelines of a National Rifle Association meeting — outreach that Jared Kushner subsequently failed to disclose, sources have told NBC. Earlier this week, the top Republican and Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee contacted Mr Kushner's attorney asking for more documents from Mr Kushner, who is the President's son-in-law and a top aide. Specifically, the panel — which is conducting one of multiple investigations into potential collaboration between the Russian government and Mr Trump's presidential campaign — said Mr Kushner's attorney had not turned over documents concerning a "Russian backdoor overture and dinner invite". |

How North Korean Weapons Could Start a War (in the Middle East) Posted: 18 Nov 2017 04:48 AM PST On November 4, a ballistic missile exploded above King Khalid Airport near Riyadh after being intercepted by Saudi Patriot missiles. The attack, launched by Houthi rebels in Yemen, led the Saudi government to blame Iran for supporting the rebels, escalating tensions across the Middle East. Curiously, however, many of Yemen's ballistic missiles came from North Korea—a design that North Korea, in turn, had acquired from Egypt. |

Erdogan says Turkey must clear Syria's Afrin of YPG militia Posted: 17 Nov 2017 03:09 AM PST President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that Turkey needed to clear the Afrin region of northwest Syria of Kurdish YPG militia fighters, who have been in the forefront of the battle there against Islamic State insurgents. Erdogan, speaking in Ankara to officials from the ruling AK Party, also expressed disappointment with the United States, which backs the YPG. Ankara views the YPG as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has fought a decades-long insurgency in Turkey and is designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and European Union. |

Hezbollah holding Lebanon hostage: Saudi FM Posted: 17 Nov 2017 08:21 AM PST Saudi Arabia's foreign minister on Friday accused Hezbollah, which Riyadh blames for the shock resignation of Lebanese premier Saad Hariri, of holding Lebanon hostage and using its banks to launder money. Adel al-Jubeir told reporters in Madrid that the Shiite group was destabilising Lebanon by maintaining its arsenal and fighters in the Mediterranean nation. "You cannnot have a militia with a military force that operates outside the scope of the government," he told reporters after talks with Spanish counterpart Alfonso Dastis. |

Vatican says investigating alleged abuser who became priest Posted: 18 Nov 2017 07:56 AM PST The Vatican said on Saturday it had opened an investigation into reports that a former teenage altar boy, who allegedly repeatedly forced a dormitory mate to have sex with him, went on to become a priest. The allegations concerning the St. Pius X Institute, known as a pre-seminary, were made in a recent book and in Italian television reports. The pre-seminary is a residence inside the Vatican for altar boys who serve at masses in St. Peter's Basilica mostly presided over by priests, bishops and cardinals. |

Hero police officer saved 'many lives' by bear hugging suicide bomber Posted: 18 Nov 2017 06:49 AM PST A 'hero' Afghan police officer saved "many lives" by putting a suicide bomber in a bear hug, authorities say. Sayed Basam Pacha died when he confronted the man wearing an explosive vest in the Afghan capital of Kabul on 16 November. His brave actions prevented the bomber from getting closer to a security checkpoint outside a hotel where a political meeting of supporters of an influential regional leader had just finished. The bomber killed 14 people, including seven more police officers, and injured 18, when he detonated his device, however the death toll would have undoubtedly been higher without the officer's decisive intervention. "He's a hero, he saved many lives," Kabul police chief Basir Mujahid told the New York Times. "All seven of those policemen are heroes but especially him. "Just think if that suicide attacker got past the gate, what would have happened - well you cannot even imagine." His father, Gen Sayed Nizam Agha, said his son "sacrificed himself to save other people". The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, with the Taliban denying any involvement. Harun Mutaref, who was at the gathering, told AFP, said he saw "many bodies including police and civilians lying in blood". "After lunch as we were exiting the hall a huge explosion shook the hall, shattering glass and causing chaos and panic," he said. In October, a suicide bomber thought to be as young as 12 killed five in Kabul's diplomatic zone, with the Islamic State again claiming responsibility. |

US to sell Patriot missile system to Poland Posted: 17 Nov 2017 02:37 PM PST The US State Department said Friday it had approved the sale of a Patriot anti-missile system to NATO ally Poland, a move likely to irk Russia. The State Department said it had notified Congress on November 14 of its approval of the deal, which is worth up to $10.5 billion, and would mark the first time Poland has bought the sophisticated system. "A secure Europe capable of deterring air and missile threats and other forms of aggression promotes peace and stability within NATO and on the European continent," officials said in a statement. |
