Campus assault claims: 75 men sue for putting accusers' rights before theirs Posted: 24 Mar 2016 02:23 PM PDT The government-led push against sexual assault on college campuses has unintentionally produced a new batch of victims: male students accused of rape, yet never found guilty in criminal court. Overall, sexual assault is believed to remain vastly underreported, despite a strong push from the US Department of Education in 2011. |
Who votes Trump? Sketch of a typical backer Posted: 24 Mar 2016 12:31 PM PDT Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump's most enthusiastic supporters are predominantly white, lack college education, and bemoan their apparent marginalization in a rapidly changing America. Confoundingly for Trump's rivals, so-called "Trumpeters" refuse to conform to conservative orthodoxy. The demographic that routinely scores highest for Trump is those whose formal education ended with high school. |

Are colleges doing enough to support low-income students? Posted: 24 Mar 2016 09:45 AM PDT A report by the US Department of Education describes practical strategies for the federal government, states, and the institutions themselves to help with recruiting – and graduating – students from low-income backgrounds. "For years, colleges and universities have adopted an approach that was around admitting the best students they could and the onus was on the student to make it," said Andrew Nichols, a researcher at The Education Trust whose data was used in the report. The Dispute Over Whether Attending a Good College Helps or Hurts Average Students Posted: 24 Mar 2016 04:30 AM PDT According to a leading economist, the public debate over affirmative action's role in higher education is missing the point, and could actually lead to worse academic outcomes for students who get a boost from a college's affirmative-action policies. That view, however, is hotly contested by a wide range of scholars. |
Chicago teachers authorize one-day walkout Posted: 23 Mar 2016 06:17 PM PDT The Chicago Teachers Union's governing body voted on Wednesday to send its 27,000 members and support staff off the job for one day next month to protest slow-moving contract talks and inadequate education funding. The planned walkout, which Chicago Public Schools (CPS) administrators characterized as illegal, represents the latest jolt for the nation's third largest public school system that faces a $1.1 billion structural budget deficit, caused largely by escalating annual pension payments. The walkout was announced early Wednesday evening after the union's governing body voted overwhelmingly in favor of the work stoppage despite earlier reports that the approach favored by CTU president Karen Lewis had fueled dissension within the union's ranks. |
Chicago Teachers Union approves walkout on April 1 Posted: 23 Mar 2016 06:09 PM PDT CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Teachers Union voted Wednesday to walk off the job on April 1 and close down the schools for the day in a battle with district officials over funding and a new contract. |
8 Financial Decisions You'll Regret Forever Posted: 23 Mar 2016 05:40 AM PDT According to John Sweeney, executive vice president for retirement and investment strategies at Fidelity Investments, you're likely to reduce or suspend new contributions during the period you're repaying the loan. Keep in mind, too, that you'll be paying the interest on that 401(k) loan with after-tax dollars -- then paying taxes on those funds again when retirement rolls around. College tuition, for instance, can be covered with student loans and PLUS loans for parents. |
