South Korea says North agrees to hold summit preparation talks on March 29 Posted: 24 Mar 2018 12:54 AM PDT By Cynthia Kim SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea has agreed to hold high-level talks with South Korea on March 29 at the border truce village of Panmunjom to prepare for a summit of their leaders planned for April, the South said on Saturday. A team of three officials will be led by Ri Son Gwon, the chairman of North Korea's committee for the peaceful reunification of the country, the North told its neighbor early on Saturday, the South's Unification Ministry said. "This morning, North Korea sent a message through a communication channel in Panmunjom agreeing to our suggestion made on the 22nd to hold high-level inter-Korea talks," the ministry said in a statement. |
France honours 'hero' officer who was killed after swapping himself for hostage Posted: 24 Mar 2018 09:32 AM PDT Flags were flown at half-mast in gendarme stations across France as the country honoured the officer declared a national hero by President Emmanuel Macron after he swapped himself for a hostage and was killed by an Islamist gunman. "Arnaud Beltrame died in the service of the nation to which he had already given so much," Mr Macron said. "In giving his life to end the deadly plan of a jihadi terrorist, he fell as a hero." The 45-year-old Lieutenant Colonel in the gendarmerie died in hospital overnight from gun wounds after he offered himself in exchange for a hostage held by an attacker holed up in a supermarket in the southwestern town of Trèbes on Friday. Arnaud Beltrame, 45, took the place of a woman who gunman Radouane Lakdim was holding as a hostage Credit: AP Unbeknownst to his Morocco-born captor, who had by then killed three people in a shooting spree and wounded 16 more, he left his mobile phone on so police outside could hear what was happening inside the store. They stormed the building when they heard gunfire - the gunman shot and stabbed his captive - and shot dead the hostage-taker. Mr Beltrame was taken out alive and transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital, but died a few hours later. Carcassonne shooing - locator map They stormed the building when they heard gunfire and shot dead the hostage-taker. But Mr Beltrame was wounded in the intervention and died hours later. Tributes to the dead officer, who first took his place among the elite police special forces in 2003 and was decorated in 2007 after serving in Iraq, flooded in on Saturday morning as the country woke to the news of his death. The president was among the first to respond, with a long statement listing the gendarme's glittering career - which included four years handling security at the Elysée - and saying he "deserved the respect and admiration of the entire nation." The officer's name was the top trending hashtag on the French edition of Twitter, with members of the public in France and around the world paying tribute to what many of them called a "true hero." Police gather outside a supermarket in Trebes Credit: AP The name of the 25-year-old Islamist hostage-taker, Redouane Lakdim, who claimed allegiance to the Islamic State, was the second most used term on Twitter. It was General Richard Lizurey, the director general of the national gendarmerie, who ordered the French tricolour to be flown at half-mast at stations across the country, saying he wanted to pay "solemn homage to the heroism of our comrade." Arnaud Beltrame was killed after swapping himself for a hostage in the town of Trebes, southwestern France Credit: AFP Locals placed flowers on the ground outside the barracks in the town of Carcassonne where Mr Beltrame was based. "At school, we were very scared," read one note placed by the flowers and signed by a little girl named Lilou. "You were very brave." "He gave his life for someone else, for a stranger," said the officer's brother Cédric. "He departed as a hero." Mr Beltrame's mother, speaking late on Friday while her son was still fighting for his life in hospital, said that when she heard the news that a gendarme had swapped himself for a hostage, she immediately "knew it was him." "He's always been like that. He is someone… who would do anything for his country," she said. Gendarmes and police officers at a supermarket after a hostage situation in Trebes Credit: REUTERS Mr Beltrame, who was married with no children, graduated from France's elite Saint-Cyr military academy in 1999. He later trained for the elite GIGN police force that specialises in counter-terrorism and hostage rescue, and at one point trained to become a military freefall parachutist, a type of high-altitude parachuting most often carried out by special forces. He worked as an advisor at the ecology ministry for three years before going back to field work last year in the Aude region where his final - and fatal - intervention took place on Friday. Mr Beltrame had organised a training session in the region in December for just such a hostage situation. At the time, he armed his officers with paintball guns, according to Depeche du Midi, the local newspaper. "We want to be as close to real conditions as possible," he said then. The identities of the three other fatal casualties of Friday's attacks have been made public. Jean Mazières, a winemaker in his 60s, was the first to die when Lakdim hijacked the car he was travelling in in Carcassonne and shot him dead. The driver of the car, a Portuguese national, was seriously injured. Christian Medves was the butcher in the Super U shop in Trèbes. He was shot in the head when the attacker burst into the supermarket Hervé Sosna, a retired bricklayer, was a customer standing next to Medves when he was gunned down. Investigators probing Friday's attack are focusing on establishing how the gunman, who was known to police for petty crime and drug dealing, got his weapon and how he became radicalised. Two people have been detained over alleged links with a terrorist enterprise, one woman close to Lakdim and one friend of his, a 17-year-old male, the Paris prosecutor's office said. |

UK regulators search Cambridge Analytica offices Posted: 23 Mar 2018 06:05 PM PDT British regulators on Friday began searching the London offices of Cambridge Analytica (CA), the scandal-hit communications firm at the heart of the Facebook data scandal, shortly after a judge approved a search warrant. Around 18 enforcement agents from the office of Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham entered the company's London headquarters at around 8:00pm (2000 GMT) to execute the warrant. The High Court granted the raid request less than an hour earlier, as Denham investigates claims that Cambridge Analytica may have illegally harvested Facebook data for political ends. |

Mount Etna slowly 'sliding towards the Mediterranean Sea' Posted: 24 Mar 2018 08:20 AM PDT Mount Etna, Europe's largest and most active volcano, is slowly sliding towards the Mediterranean Sea, scientists have observed. The entire 3,350m (11,000ft) stratovolcano, located on the east coast of the Italian island of Sicily, is currently moving downslope at an average rate of 14 mm per year - or 1.4 metres over 100 years. Experts have warned the sliding could eventually lead to greater risk of large scale slope failure, which could trigger landslides, however researchers at The Open University emphasised there is currently no sign of that happening. Dr John Murray, lead author of the paper published in the Bulletin of Volcanology, stressed the minute movement currently posed no danger to life, but warned that monitoring the volcano for more significant changes was crucial. "At the moment there is no cause for concern from the sliding of the volcano towards the sea, the movement is just too small," Dr Murray told The Telegraph. "However, the possibility of things changing in the future needs to be taken seriously, so it is important to keep monitoring the movement." At a glance | Deadliest volcanic eruptions The UK-led team, who monitored the changes using GPS technology placed around the mountain, found the sliding is lubricated by the weak sediments beneath Etna and the slope of the basement. Dr Murray, who has been working for 49 years studying the active volcanoes of Mount Etna, said if a sector collapse were to occur, the results could be "catastrophic". "Around one million people live on Etna and its immediate surroundings, so the destruction of property and loss of life could be catastrophic; but I cannot emphasise enough that there is no sign of this happening at the present time," he explained. "Clearly even the mention of such a dangerous event would be very unnerving for the people who live on Etna, so I am anxious that they don't get the wrong impression." At a glance | Where are the world's most famous volcanoes? It is the first time basement sliding of an entire active volcano has been directly observed, with the team suggesting that similar edging may be taking place at other active volcanoes such as Mexico's Volcán de Colima and Mount Teide in Tenerife. Dr Murray said he did not expect the rate of movement to increase, but added: "I regard it as essential to keep measuring our stations, and will be on the lookout for any kind of change in rate of downslope sliding." |
Russia denies aiding Afghan Taliban in wake of U.S. general's comments Posted: 24 Mar 2018 11:46 PM PDT Russia has rejected comments by NATO's top commander in Afghanistan that it has been supporting and even supplying weapons to the Taliban, in a clash of words that underlines growing tension over Moscow's involvement in the conflict. In an interview with the BBC last week, General John Nicholson said that Russia had been acting to undermine U.S. efforts in Afghanistan despite shared interests in fighting terrorism and narcotics, with indications that Moscow was providing financial support and even arms. "We've had weapons brought to this headquarters and given to us by Afghan leaders and said this was given by the Russians to the Taliban," he said. |

Historic non-stop flight between Australia and UK takes off Posted: 24 Mar 2018 03:53 PM PDT Passengers have taken off for the first direct flight between Australia and London, passing a major milestone by reducing to 17 hours a trip that once took 12 1/2 days. The 9,000-mile flight from Perth, one of the world's most isolated cities, marks the first direct passenger service between the continents. Qantas Airways' inaugural service between the Australian city of Perth and Heathrow took off on Saturday evening and will touch down in London at 5.05am on Sunday before departing for the return trip at 1.15pm that afternoon. Passengers will be on board the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft for 17 hours as they make the 9,009-mile journey. This is 24% further than the UK's existing longest route of 7,275 miles, operated by Garuda Indonesia between Heathrow and Jakarta. Everything you need to know about the first non-stop flights from Britain to Australia The new link with Perth will be around three hours quicker than routes which involve stopping in the Middle East to change planes or refuel. It will also enable faster journeys to Sydney and Melbourne than flying via Dubai. The new link is part of Qantas' ambitious plans, unveiled over the past two years, to add ultra long-haul flights to its global schedules. This will eventually include non-stop flights from Australia's eastern seaboard to Europe in an effort dubbed "Project Sunrise". Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce last year said such flights were "the last frontier of global aviation ... the antidote to the tyranny of distance and a revolution for air travel in Australia". Travel firm Flight Centre has recorded "high demand" for the new Qantas flights. Its head of aviation, Justin Penny, said: "Flight Centre definitely feels that long-term the new route is viable and we will see additional services being launched from Europe to Australia in the coming years." Top 10 | The world's longest flights Lisa Norman, the flight's captain, said "we have been working towards (this) for the past three years and it's very exciting". "When I joined Qantas not in my wildest imagination would I have thought this possible," she told the West Australian. Capt. Norman says she will be "absolutely exhilarated" when the plane touches down in London. "It's like when a painter puts the final brush stroke on the work." Alan Joyce checks in for the first Perth to London direct flight. Possibly the most filmed check in ever at @PerthAirport@7NewsPerthpic.twitter.com/KjKhpbfbdu— Rob Scott (@Rob7Scott) March 24, 2018 Aviation consultant John Strickland said the launch of the flights was a significant moment for the airline industry. He told the Press Association: "It will be a further test of how successful airlines can be with ultra long-haul flying and whether this delivers sufficient profitability to justify the investment in aircraft. "Qantas will certainly be hoping to attract a higher proportion of premium customers due to the speed advantage combined with the 787's better cabin atmosphere." The Dreamliners on the Perth-Heathrow route will have 42 business class flat-bed seats, 28 premium economy seats and 166 economy seats. The aircraft boasts a number of advantages over other models, including lower cabin noise, larger windows, improved air quality and technology to reduce turbulence. History is being made today. Our new international terminal will open and all @Qantas services will operate from T3/T4. Check your itinerary for your terminal number. The first non-stop flight from Perth to London will depart this evening. — Perth Airport (@PerthAirport) March 24, 2018 They are also heralded for their fuel efficiency, although the impact of this will be reduced by the weight of the fuel needed to fly between the UK and Australia without stopping. The world's longest regular passenger flight is operated by Qatar Airways between Doha and Auckland, at 9,025 miles. For Qantas, the Perth connection is a high-profile test for a planned ultra long-haul network that the airline hopes will span the world by 2022. "You have the resources sector on both sides, you have banks, you have lawyers that all want to fly fast and reliably and comfortably,"' said Rico Merkert, professor of transport and supply-chain management at the University of Sydney's business school. "And I think they're prepared to pay the premium." flight board is live! Perth-London non-stop - last two continents to be connected by direct air service. Care to guess exact flight time (scheduled 17hrs, 20min)? I'm tipping 16.59 pic.twitter.com/i3fOk73O9i— Andrew Parker (@ajamesparker) March 24, 2018 Mining companies in Western Australia dig up more than a third of the world's iron-ore and bring in some of the largest hauls of gems and rare earths. The sector also supports financial-services firms such as Hartleys Ltd., whose Perth-based director of corporate finance Steve Kite is booked on Sunday's flight -- the second in the new service to London -- for just a four-day trip. "It's effectively an overnight flight for me and that feels like I'm saving a lot of time," Mr Kite said. Not everyone is convinced of the route's commercial future. Aircraft leaving Perth for London will need feeder passengers from around Australia, said Volodymyr Bilotkach, author of the book "The Economics of Airlines." But flying from Sydney to London via Perth saves little time over a transfer in Asia or the Gulf, he said. Historic flight Perth-London direct tonight with @Qantas Dreamliner making the first 17-hour non-stop service. Glad to be a part of last night's launch. Sure beats four days and 9 stops in 1947. Great boost for WA tourism and investment. pic.twitter.com/BpqLJY8Ueq— Michael McCormack MP (@M_McCormackMP) March 24, 2018 Andrew McGinnes, a spokesman for Qantas in Sydney, said bookings on the new route "have been strong" and corporate clients in eastern Australia have indicated they'll stop in Perth for meetings on their way to London. "It's a very competitive market but this is a unique flight," Mr McGinnes said. An analysis of flight times and prices highlights the challenges Qantas faces. Flying business class from Perth to London with Qantas in mid-June would cost A$6,614 (£3,600). Opting for Singapore Airlines via Singapore would take an extra 2 1/2 hours but cost just A$4,843 (£2,600), according to fares on Webjet. Qantas has challenged Boeing and Airbus to build a jet by 2022 that can fly fully loaded from Sydney to London without a break. Success on the Perth-London service would lay the foundations for even longer routes to Europe. "It's really just the beginning," said Merkert at the University of Sydney. |
UK investigators search London office of firm at centre of Facebook data storm Posted: 24 Mar 2018 04:24 AM PDT Investigators from Britain's data watchdog searched the London offices of Cambridge Analytica, the data analytics firm at the centre of a storm over allegations it improperly harvested Facebook data to target U.S. voters. The officials, who were let into the building by security guards, were seen checking books and papers through the windows of the second-floor offices on London's busy New Oxford Street, a Reuters witness said. |

Pope Francis urges young people to speak out against elders Posted: 25 Mar 2018 09:51 AM PDT Pope Francis on Palm Sunday urged young people not to be silent and let their voices be heard, even in the face of corrupt or silent elders. The Pope's message yesterday came on the heels of a meeting of young Catholics who told the Vatican they want a more transparent and authentic church, and a day after hundreds of thousands marched in youth-led rallies across the United States to demand greater gun control. "The temptation to silence young people has always existed," Francis said. "There are many ways to silence young people and make them invisible. "There are many ways to sedate them, to keep them from getting involved, to make their dreams flat and dreary, petty and plaintive." But he told youths in his homily that "you have it in you to shout," even if "we older people and leaders, very often corrupt, keep quiet." Pope Francis encouraged young people to voice their concerns Credit: REUTERS/Tony Gentile As the Roman Catholic Church enters Holy Week, retracing the story of the crucifixion of Jesus and his resurrection three days later on Easter Sunday, Francis urged youth to join those who offer praise, and not the masses calling for crucifixion. "Dear young people, the joy that Jesus awakens in you is a source of anger and irritation to some, since a joyful person is hard to manipulate," the pontiff said. Some 300 youths meeting at the Vatican this week prepared a document for next October's synod of bishops at the Vatican focusing on to help youths better find their way in the church. Pope Francis held palm as he lead the Palm Sunday Mass in Saint Peter's Square Credit: REUTERS/Tony Gentile The document, which was presented to Francis on Sunday, asked church leaders to address the unequal roles of women in the church and how technology is abused. Before his traditional Sunday prayer at the end of Mass, the Pope recalled the importance World Youth Day, marked this year on Palm Sunday at a diocesan level rather than as a big international gathering. The Pope's message also resonated with the Saturday protests across the United States for tougher laws to fight gun violence, a movement galvanized by the school shooting last month in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 people dead. Thousands marched on Washington DC for the anti-gun-violence demonstration, March For Our Lives Credit: MANDEL NGAN/AFP/Getty Images At the end of Mass, the Pope and cardinals in red robes led a solemn procession clutching elaborately braided palm fronds as they walked through the throngs, followed by the papal blessing of palm fronds and olive branches. The processions recalls the bittersweet nature of Holy Week, with the faithful clutching simple palm fronds and olive branches to commemorate Jesus' triumphant entrance into Jerusalem only to be followed later by his death on a wooden cross. The Pope concluded by greeting the faithful in St. Peter's Square, getting out of the popemobile to shake hands as many cheered and took pictures. |
