U.S. judge sets Manafort sentencing date in Washington case Posted: 04 Feb 2019 03:22 PM PST U.S. President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort will be sentenced on March 13 for attempted witness tampering and conspiring against the United States, according to a court filing on Monday. Judge Amy Berman Jackson, the federal judge presiding over Manafort's case in Washington, had previously tentatively scheduled the sentencing hearing for March 5. Manafort pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy against the United States and began cooperating with prosecutors working on U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and possible links between the Trump campaign and Moscow. |

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 11:25 AM PST If you were to design a perfect judge for the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals in a laboratory, that judge would look like Neomi Rao. The D.C. Circuit, the nation's second most important court, is the leading court in which administrative-law decisions are made and one that has exclusive jurisdiction over many federal regulatory agencies. As it happens, Rao currently serves as an extraordinarily effective head of the U.S. Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), from which she spearheads the Trump administration's approach to regulatory policy. |

Posted: 04 Feb 2019 03:55 AM PST Russia has warned against "destructive meddling" in Venezuela as Britain recognised opposition leader Juan Guaido as interim president. The US, Canada and several Latin American and European countries have disavowed Nicolas Maduro over his disputed re-election last year and recognised Mr Guaido, the national assembly president, as the country's rightful leader. "The international community's goal should be to help [Venezuela], without destructive meddling from beyond its borders," Alexander Shchetinin, head of the Latin America department at Russia's foreign ministry, told the Interfax news agency. |

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 02:41 AM PST A serial killer who has admitted eight murders was in the middle of another killing when police knocked on his door, a court has heard. Bruce McArthur, who killed eight gay men over seven years, had taken another intended victim back to his apartment in Toronto, Canada. When they arrived, they found McArthur had chained the man – identified in court only as John – to a four-poster bed and placed a black bag over his head. |
Iraqi president says Trump did not ask permission to 'watch Iran' Posted: 04 Feb 2019 09:25 AM PST U.S. troops in Iraq are there as part of an agreement between the two countries with a specific mission of combating terrorism, Salih said, and that they should stick to that. Trump said it was important to keep a U.S. military presence in Iraq so that Washington can keep a close eye on Iran "because Iran is a real problem," according to a CBS interview broadcast on Sunday. "Don't overburden Iraq with your own issues," Salih said. |

Graham Warns GOP to Back Trump on Wall Emergency Posted: 04 Feb 2019 01:58 PM PST "To every Republican, if you don't stand behind this president, we're not going to stand behind you, when it comes to the wall," Graham said in a speech in Greenville, South Carolina, of the political fight with Democrats over a border barrier. Graham said he doesn't expect Congress to come up with a deal that would provide money for a wall in spending negotiations to avert another government shutdown after Feb. 15. Trump has mused for weeks about invoking emergency authority to build the wall, potentially by shifting Defense Department or disaster aid spending. |
Turkmenistan Airlines ban strands hundreds in Britain Posted: 05 Feb 2019 09:18 AM PST Hundreds of passengers were left stranded in Britain on Tuesday after European aviation authorities suspended Turkmenistan Airlines over safety concerns. The isolated central Asian republic's flag carrier provides services from London and Birmingham to the Indian city of Amritsar which is popular with Britain's Punjabi community. Britain's Civil Aviation Authority cited a notice from its European counterpart announcing the suspension of flights on Monday. |

In east Syria, civilians escape IS but not death Posted: 05 Feb 2019 01:19 PM PST Umra Abbas Ammour, 60, dreamt of safety as she and her family fled jihadists in eastern Syria, but hours after reaching US-backed forces her son, daughter and granddaughter were all dead. "We try to escape death then, when we go out, we find death in front of us," said Ammour, who hails from the Iraqi province of Anbar. Ammour is just one of several to say they were hit while attempting to flee into areas controlled by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces. |
U.S. sends aid to Colombia-Venezuela border; Maduro rejects help Posted: 05 Feb 2019 12:36 PM PST Two officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said the aid will be staged at the main Colombian-Venezuelan border crossing at Cucuta. "I anticipate having perhaps a dozen locations all around Venezuela where such aid will be staged," the official said. The U.S. officials said trucks carrying the aid, including high-protein foods, would arrive in Cucuta this week at the request of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, who last month declared himself to be the South American nation's interim president. |

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 04:11 AM PST Donald Trump's postponed State of the Union address to Congress has been rescheduled for 5 February after the longest US government shutdown in history was brought to a close. Originally scheduled for 29 January, House speaker Nancy Pelosi asked the president not to go ahead with his speech during the diplomatic impasse and suggested he submit it by letter, a manoeuvre Republicans were quick to brand "political" and which appeared to provoke Mr Trump into denying Ms Pelosi's congressional delegation the use of a military plane to visit troops in Afghanistan. The president finally bowed to the speaker's right to refuse him an invitation but can now press ahead, albeit a week later than planned. |

Tonight's dinner: Onion tarte tatin Posted: 03 Feb 2019 10:00 PM PST Some ingredients are the cornerstone of everything you cook. Those few things you always have knocking about, which you can make dinner from in minutes. For me, they are pasta, garlic and onions. If I go to the cupboard and find any of them missing or even slightly low in stock I feel a bit panicky. Because when the fridge is bare and even the thought of going to the corner shop seems out of the question, the three of them alone will give you the most satisfying bowl of food. The other thing I love about that dish is that it puts onions (so often the base of what we cook rather than the star) front and centre. They punch above their weight, onions. All they need is a little salt, fat and acid and they are just one of the most deliciously sweet and savoury things you can eat. This tart makes great use of a couple of onions, a slosh of vinegar, and a bit of shop bought pastry. It looks impressive but it couldn't be simpler. Serve it with some crumbly goats cheese, good bread and a mustardy salad. SERVES 5 INGREDIENTS 2 large or 4 small onions 100g butter Olive oil 1 tbsp rosemary 50ml balsamic vinegar 50ml sherry vinegar or red wine vinegar 1 tbsp caster sugar 320g pre rolled puff pastry (roughly cut into a circle) Serve with goats cheese and mustardy salad Credit: Eleanor Steafel METHOD Preheat the oven to 200C/gas 6. Slice each onion in half from root to tip and peel off the skin. Cut each half into three wedges and trim off the root. Melt the butter in a heavy frying pan (the kind that can go in the oven) over a medium heat along with a glug of olive oil. Add the onions and a pinch of salt and fry for ten minutes, turning each wedge carefully every now and again. Arrange the onion wedges so that they fill the pan in a rough spiral. Add the rosemary and put the pan in the oven. Cook for another ten minutes so the onions get really soft and start to brown. Take the pan out of the oven and sprinkle over the sugar, and then the vinegar. Let it bubble up and shake the pan a little to coat the onions in the sugar and vinegar. Cook for about three minutes so the vinegar can reduce a bit. Take the pastry and lay it over the pan, tucking in the edges. Don't worry about getting it neat as it'll puff up around the onions. Put the pan in the oven and leave for about 20 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and puffy. Leave to cool and set a little in the pan for about five minutes, then run a knife around the edge of the pan and flip the tart out onto a large plate. Serve with crumbly goats cheese and a mustardy salad. |

Nayib Bukele: president-elect disrupting Salvadoran politics Posted: 04 Feb 2019 01:00 AM PST Nayib Bukele, former San Salvador mayor, was on Sunday elected president of El Salvador -- crushing a two-party system in place since civil war ended in 1992. The Salvadoran election authority awarded him 53.78 percent of votes with 87.67 percent counted -- while Carlos Calleja of the rightwing Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) won 31.62 percent, and Hugo Martinez of the leftist Farabundo Marti Front for National Liberation (FMLN) took 13.77 percent. Bukele -- a favorite in the polls throughout the campaign -- ran for the small, conservative Grand Alliance for National Unity (GANA), which welcomed him after he was expelled from the FMLN, a party formed by demobilized guerrilla groups. |
Trump to choose Treasury's Malpass to lead World Bank: sources Posted: 04 Feb 2019 08:34 PM PST The nomination of Malpass would put a Trump loyalist and a skeptic of multilateral institutions in line to lead the World Bank, which committed nearly $64 billion to developing countries in the year ended June 30, 2018. Politico, which first reported the decision, said it would be announced on Wednesday, citing unidentified administration officials. Venezuela: nearly two weeks of turmoil Posted: 04 Feb 2019 05:46 AM PST Opposition chief Juan Guaido's claim nearly two weeks ago to be acting president plunged crisis-hit Venezuela into new turmoil, with a series of countries recognizing him as leader while others continue to back President Nicolas Maduro. On January 23, at a rally in Caracas of tens of thousands of people demanding that Maduro quit, Guaido -- head of the opposition-controlled National Assembly -- declares to cheering supporters that he assumes the role of acting president. Condemning Maduro's "usurpation" of power, he pledges to form a transitional government and hold free elections. |
Nissan scraps plan to build new X-Trail model in Britain Posted: 03 Feb 2019 07:28 PM PST Carmaker Nissan has scrapped plans to build its new X-Trail SUV in Britain and will produce it solely in Japan, warning two months before Brexit that uncertainty over Britain's departure was making it harder to plan for the future. Falling demand for diesel cars in Europe has forced Nissan to invest in other technologies and save costs. It cut hundreds of jobs at its Sunderland factory in the north of England, Britain's biggest car plant, last year as output slumped 11 percent, hit by levies and crackdowns on diesel. |
