Author Eric Metaxas, evangelical intellectual, chose Trump, and he's sticking with him Posted: 23 Feb 2018 02:00 AM PST Eric Metaxas, who wrote a bestselling biography of the anti-Nazi pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, surprised his friends when he came out in support of Donald Trump. And nothing that has happened since the election has changed his mind. Jon Ward explores what led him to this position and how he deals with the suspicions that he is "a fundamentalist in an intellectual's clothing." |
Posted: 23 Feb 2018 10:14 AM PST Few of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students had even been born the day two gunmen shot and killed Coni Sanders' father in a massacre at Columbine High School in 1999 – the largest school shooting in America at the time. "This has been 18 years of, every time there is a mass shooting all of the adults start screaming at each other and telling each other why they're wrong," said Ms Sanders, who has worked as a forensic therapist for violent offenders since her father, Columbine High School teacher Dave Sanders, was murdered. Indeed, since the day of the shooting, many students of Stoneman Douglas have spoken up unequivocally about the need for more gun control. |
Armed deputy at Florida school resigns after failing to engage shooter Posted: 22 Feb 2018 03:06 PM PST The armed deputy assigned to the campus of a Florida high school during a deadly shooting last week stayed outside the building during the attack and failed to engage the shooter, the county sheriff said on Thursday. As a consequence, Scott Peterson, on duty as the school resource officer at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, resigned from the department, said Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, who earlier has suspended the officer from the force. Israel said he decided to suspend Peterson after viewing a video that showed the deputy's actions during the rampage that killed 17 people. |

Canada to accept bid from Boeing for new fighter jets Posted: 22 Feb 2018 04:16 PM PST Canada said Thursday it was allowing Boeing to submit a bid to replace the country's aging F-18 fleet, after an earlier trade dispute between the American manufacturer and Ottawa. The announcement came a month after the US International Trade Commission rejected a complaint filed by Boeing against its Canadian rival Bombardier, demanding nearly 300 percent anti-dumping duties on the C Series passenger plane. Boeing, which makes the Super Hornet, is one of five manufacturers invited to submit proposals in spring 2019 for an order of 88 advanced fighter jets, which are to be delivered in 2025, according to a Canadian government statement. |

Posted: 22 Feb 2018 02:00 AM PST Too often, Mitt Romney has treated principled rhetoric like a stretchy suit he can change into in a phone booth, then throw into a trash can when no one's looking. But if he wins a Utah Senate seat, he could become something he's never managed to be: the most influential figure in the GOP outside of the White House. |

Pro-Kurdish party says Turkey lying about 'no civilian deaths' in Afrin Posted: 22 Feb 2018 07:07 AM PST Turkey's main pro-Kurdish party accused the government of "spreading misinformation" about no civilian deaths in its latest Syrian offensive on Thursday, calling on Ankara to halt the operation. Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said earlier Thursday that no civilian had been killed -- or suffered so much as "a nose bleed" -- in Turkey's air and ground campaign in the Kurdish enclave of Afrin in northern Syria. |

Philippines summons US envoy over Duterte 'threat' report Posted: 23 Feb 2018 03:05 AM PST The Philippine government summoned the US ambassador over an American intelligence report that listed President Rodrigo Duterte and his deadly war on drugs as a "regional threat", Manila said Friday. US envoy Sung Kim met Duterte's chief aide on Thursday to discuss the US "Worldwide Threat Assessment" released last week, the two nations said. Under a section headed "regional threats", the report listed Cambodian leader Hun Sen's crackdown on dissent, Duterte's war on crime and corruption as well as the flight of the Rohingya minority from Myanmar to Bangladesh. |
Marine Le Pen's niece tells Trump supporters: We want our country back too Posted: 22 Feb 2018 10:54 AM PST Marine Le Pen's niece has echoed Donald Trump as she called for a "France first" agenda and told US right-wingers: "Just like you, we want our country back." Marion Maréchal-Le Pen cited Mr Trump's election victory and the Brexit vote in 2016 as inspiration for France to distance itself from the European Union (EU). She used an address to the Conservative Political Action Conference on Thursday to praise the US president's success in putting conservatism at the top of the political agenda. And she claimed the French youth is right-leaning and believers in national identity as she issued a call to arms for the populist revolution. "Let me be clear here. I'm not offended when I hear President Donald Trump say 'America first'," Ms Le Pen said. "In fact, I want America first for the American people, I want Britain first for the British people and I want France first for the French people." Ms Le Pen, a 28-year-old National Front politician whose aunt led the party in last year's election, had faced controversy over her appearance from the US media given her hardline views. Taking to the stage, she joked away the row, saying she was "less terrifying" than the US newspapers had portrayed. In a 10-minute speech which saw mentions of the EU booed by the right-wing crowd, Ms Le Pen suggested she wanted to repeat in France what Mr Trump had achieved in America. "Just like you, we want our country back. I came here to tell you that there is a youth ready for this fight in Europe today," she said. "A youth who believes in hard work, who believe the flag means something, who want to preserve individual freedom and private property." Ms Le Pen repeatedly criticised the EU for "slowly killing" nation states and warned over the impact of "political correctness" and "massive immigration" in France. "The last two years have shown one thing: Never underestimate the people," she said. Ms Le Pen continued:"When the people are given the opportunity to take their country back, they will seize it. "Through your actions and your talents, you have succeeded in putting conservatism right back to the top of the political agenda. "Let us build on what you have achieved here so that both sides on the Atlantic a conservative agenda will remain." |
The Navy Has One Nuclear Spy Submarine So Secret We Know Almost Nothing About It Posted: 22 Feb 2018 08:15 AM PST The unit makes no mention of intelligence gathering. The service describes the spy ships it runs together with the U.S. Air Force as "missile range instrumentation ships." The squadron responsible for flying around the president and his staff is now simply called Marine Helicopter Squadron One, but still uses the acronym HMX-1—a nod to its "experimental" origins. On January 20, 2013, the Seawolf-class attack submarine USS Jimmy Carter left her home port in Bangor, Washington. |

SpaceX boat tries to catch pricey rocket nosecone in the Pacific Ocean, but misses Posted: 22 Feb 2018 07:54 AM PST After SpaceX successfully blasted three satellites into space early Thursday morning, the company tried to catch the Falcon 9 rocket's expensive nosecone, also known as a fairing, on a ship in the Pacific Ocean. The vessel, named "Mr. Steven," was outfitted with a giant net. According to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, the boat missed catching the fairing by "a few hundred meters," but he thinks there's a simple fix: Bigger parachutes to better control the parachuting fairing. Missed by a few hundred meters, but fairing landed intact in water. Should be able catch it with slightly bigger chutes to slow down descent. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 22, 2018 The fairing, which sheltered and released the payload during the rocket launch, parachuted down to the Pacific Ocean. A GPS guidance system helped guide the parachute close to the long, outstretched metallic arms of the awaiting ship. Assuming the nosecone is in good shape, SpaceX may still try and retrieve it from the water. Falcon fairing half as seen from our catcher's mitt in boat form, Mr. Steven. No apparent damage from reentry and splashdown. A post shared by Elon Musk (@elonmusk) on Feb 22, 2018 at 7:36am PST Recovery of the rocket fairing is aimed at bringing down the cost of access to space, since this particular part of the rocket costs between $5 and $6 million dollars. SpaceX famously lands its rocket boosters back on Earth and reuses them in subsequent launches, but it never before attempted to catch a rocket's fairing. SpaceX plans to outcompete its rocket rivals by reusing most of its rockets, as opposing to building new components for each launch. SEE ALSO: Elon Musk's 'Starman' Tesla Roadster isn't your typical piece of space junk This launch, for example, featured a Falcon 9 rocket booster that had previously been to space in August 2017. SpaceX decided not to recover the rocket for a potential third launch, however. Going to try to catch the giant fairing (nosecone) of Falcon 9 as it falls back from space at about eight times the speed of sound. It has onboard thrusters and a guidance system to bring it through the atmosphere intact, then releases a parafoil and our ship, named Mr. Steven, with basically a giant catcher's mitt welded on, tries to catch it. A post shared by Elon Musk (@elonmusk) on Feb 22, 2018 at 6:07am PST Instead, the rocket fell back to Earth and crashed into the Pacific Ocean. According to SpaceX firmware engineer Tom Praderio, "SpaceX is making room for its next iteration of Falcon 9 rockets," so it had no reason to land and reuse the rocket for a third launch. The company plans to surpass these launch numbers this year. Besides the primary payload — a Spanish satellite that can capture extremely high-resolution images of Earth — SpaceX launched two of its own microsatellites. These satellites are a test, but likely the first of thousands of internet-beaming satellites called Starlink, which is intended to provide high-speed internet access to the web-deprived corners of the world, sometime in the early to mid 2020s.
