Posted: 15 Feb 2018 10:31 AM PST The FBI was tipped off about a YouTube comment from someone using the name "nikolas cruz" who said they were going to "be a professional school shooter" in September - five months before a man with same name allegedly opened fire on pupils in Florida. The bureau had received information about the comment last year, said Robert Lasky, the special agent in charge of the Miami division. It is unclear whether it is the same Nikolas Cruz, who has been charged with 17 counts of murder after the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. |

Venezuela's Maduro to attend Americas summit, defying host Peru Posted: 15 Feb 2018 10:28 AM PST Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said Thursday he will attend a summit of Western Hemisphere nations in April despite the host Peru saying he is unwelcome. Peru said on Tuesday that Maduro's "presence will no longer be welcome" after a decision to hold early presidential elections in his crisis-torn country without reaching an agreement with the opposition. Peru's statement followed a meeting of the 14-nation Lima Group, also Tuesday, urging Venezuela to reconsider holding elections on April 22 on the grounds that conditions for a free and fair vote, as demanded by the opposition, did not currently exist. |

"It is clear to us that the situation in Rio during the carnival was unfortunate," Jungmann said in comments after meeting President Michel Temer late Wednesday. Jungmann was referring to a rash of robberies and assaults during the biggest event of the year in Rio, which saw massive street parties before culminating earlier this week with the samba parades. |

Russian toll in Syria battle was 300 killed and wounded: sources Posted: 15 Feb 2018 10:26 AM PST By Maria Tsvetkova MOSCOW (Reuters) - About 300 men working for a Kremlin-linked Russian private military firm were either killed or injured in Syria last week, according to three sources familiar with the matter. A Russian military doctor said around 100 had been killed, and a source who knows several of the fighters said the death toll was in excess of 80 men. The timing of the casualties coincided with a battle on Feb. 7 near the Syrian city of Deir al-Zor where, according to U.S. officials and associates of the fighters involved, U.S.-led coalition forces attacked forces aligned with Moscow's ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. |

Ramaphosa elected president of South Africa, vows anti-corruption fight Posted: 15 Feb 2018 08:31 AM PST By Wendell Roelf CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - Cyril Ramaphosa was elected as South Africa's president in a parliamentary vote on Thursday and pledged to tackle endemic corruption after scandal-ridden Jacob Zuma resigned on orders from the ruling African National Congress. Ramaphosa faces an uphill battle in revitalizing growth, creating jobs and stamping out a culture of graft in a nation still polarized by race and inequality more than two decades after the end of white-minority rule. Ramaphosa, in brief remarks to parliament ahead of his first state of the nation address expected on Friday, said he would work hard "not to disappoint the people of South Africa". |

Intel hit with 32 lawsuits over security flaws Posted: 16 Feb 2018 08:18 AM PST Most of the lawsuits - 30 - are customer class action cases that claim that users were harmed by Intel's "actions and/or omissions" related to the flaws, which could allow hackers to steal data from computers. Intel said in a regulatory filing it was not able to estimate the potential losses that may arise out of the lawsuits. Security researchers at the start of January publicised two flaws, dubbed Spectre and Meltdown, that affected nearly every modern computing device containing chips from Intel, Advanced Micro Devices Inc and ARM Holdings. |

EU presidency urges Britain to ditch Brexit Posted: 15 Feb 2018 03:34 AM PST Bulgaria, which holds the presidency of the EU, on Thursday warned of poor progress in Brexit talks and told Britain it was still not too late to abandon its plan to quit the bloc. Boyko Borisov, the Bulgarian prime minister, said he had so far seen nothing in the talks on Britain's exit in March 2019 to give him hope for a good outcome. The comments will come as a blow to British Prime Minister Theresa May as her senior ministers embark on a flurry of speeches to outline Britain's ambitions for Brexit. |

Afghan Taliban say they want to end war through dialogue Posted: 14 Feb 2018 07:57 PM PST The Taliban said on Wednesday, in a rare statement to the American people, they wanted to end Afghanistan's 17-year war through talks, while warning the message should not be seen as a sign of weakness and the fight against U.S. forces would go on. A more aggressive U.S. strategy in Afghanistan including a surge in air strikes introduced by President Donald Trump in August has pushed the Taliban back from several district centers and two provincial capitals. "Our preference is to solve the Afghan issue through peaceful dialogue," the Taliban said. |
