High Schools, Districts Work to Boost Graduation Rates Higher

But while more students are graduating high school than ever, the hundreds of thousands of students who drop out each year are more likely to be subject to a lifetime of poverty and lack of opportunity. Prevention, providing alternative paths to graduation and community support are the keys to ensure that all students graduate, education experts say. "Obviously, if you could catch kids when they start to miss school, early in that stage and really actively pursue them coming to school, you're much more likely to keep them in school," says Rita Martens, a consultant for the the Iowa Department of Education who deals with curriculum and standards. Martens says that Iowa school districts have focused on helping at-risk students graduate by pairing students with adult mentors, developing programs that allow students to make up credits and creating alternative high school programs, among other initiatives.
