When America's Teachers Are the Ones Skipping School Posted: 31 Oct 2016 11:51 AM PDT The Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights has reported that 27 percent of the nation's elementary and secondary school teachers missed, at minimum, more than 10 days of regular classes. The statistics, collected and released during the past few months, are based on self-reported numbers from school districts across the country. "Teacher stress has certainly been on the increase over the last decade, as teachers have been blamed for all of the socio economic problems that impact their students' academic achievement," Leo Casey, executive director of the Albert Shanker Institute, a think tank specializing in classroom issues, wrote in an email to TakePart. |
Is Attending the ‘Best’ High School Academically Irrelevant? Posted: 31 Oct 2016 10:00 AM PDT It's a rite of passage for parents in many parts of the country: Try to get your kids into the "right" high school. Parents of means move to leafy suburbs known for their great public schools, which are open to all children of families who can afford hefty mortgages. Wealthy families who remain in cities often choose private schools or else hope for a spot at an elite selective school. These slots are cherished, and families who can afford them often hire tutors to prepare their kids for a grueling admissions test. |
4 Need-to-Know Facts About State Aid for College Posted: 31 Oct 2016 05:30 AM PDT The College Board's 2016 Trends in Higher Education report found that undergraduate students received an average of $14,460 in financial aid during the 2015-2016 school year -- which includes $8,390 in grants from all sources. While federal and institutional grants represent a significant source of funding, state grants are another important funding resource for students. "I've definitely seen families that haven't received much in the way of the federal Pell Grant who received a larger award through the state," says Blaine Blontz, a financial consultant at Financial Aid Coach who advises parents and grad students on how to maximize financial aid awards. |
High School Teachers Gear Up to Cover Presidential Election Results Posted: 31 Oct 2016 05:00 AM PDT "I think this is something that transcends curriculum," says Tim Royers, a social studies teacher at Millard West High School in Omaha, Nebraska. Royers has already been covering the election with his students by walking them through how the Electoral College works, encouraging them to watch the debates and more. Students at the school are participating in a mock election, something other social studies teachers are doing or have planned. |
