MSNBC's Katy Tur Calls Out Ted Cruz's Hypocrisy For Opposing Hurricane Sandy Relief Posted: 28 Aug 2017 09:57 PM PDT As the unprecedented Hurricane Harvey's aftermath continues to pummel Texas, lawmakers in New York and New Jersey have been criticizing their Texas colleagues for potential hypocrisy ― asking for aid for their state when they were unwilling to support relief for storm victims in another part of the country. At the time, all but one Texas Republican in Congress voted against a $50.5 billion Hurricane Sandy relief package in 2013. "I covered those people," Tur continued, speaking of the victims of Hurricane Sandy. |

Pastor accused of failing to open megachurch for victims of Hurricane Harvey Posted: 29 Aug 2017 02:40 AM PDT A Texas pastor has faced a growing online backlash after being accused of not opening the doors of his megachurch to help victims of Hurricane Harvey. Joel Osteen Credit: AP Joel Osteen, a senior pastor at the 16,000-capacity Christian Lakewood Church in Houston, has been criticised for not offering to shelter flooding victims. "Lots of people online are wondering why @JoelOsteen hasn't opened his 16,000 seat megachurch in Houston to people," wrote one. The church also posted online: "We want to let you know that our hearts are with each of you and your families during this difficult time. Survivor of Katrina loses home to Hurricane Harvey: 'Most traumatic experience of my life' Posted: 29 Aug 2017 01:39 PM PDT A survivor of Hurricane Harvey described how he fled his home almost 12 years ago to the day after doing the same during Hurricane Katrina. The 22-year-old called Romeo left his flooded flat in Houston having been in a similar situation in New Orleans more than a decade ago. He told local TV station KENS5: "Most traumatic experience of my life, repeating itself. That's the crazy part. Romeo was 10 and living in New Orleans when Katrina hit. Now he's in Houston enduring Harvey. https://t.co/xw8pBDR5N7— KENS 5 (@KENS5) August 29, 2017 "You see the cars under water. It's the same thing, it's the same thing again." Romeo told KENS5 his grandmother drowned after Katrina hit. He was 10 at the time and spent a month displaced at the Astrodome in Houston. He said: "Love the people that are close to you as much as you can," he said. "Don't forget to tell people that you love them because you'll lose people." "And it's still raining," he added. The rainfall over a 20,000-square-mile area amounted to nearly 20 times the daily discharge of the Mississippi River, he said. |

Japan won't lower guard of whaling as Sea Shepherd changes tactics: official says Posted: 29 Aug 2017 03:12 AM PDT Japan will not lower its guard over its whaling even though its biggest foe - the Sea Shepherd conservation group - has said it will not send ships to disrupt its fleet this year, a government official said on Tuesday. Paul Watson, founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, said in a statement on Monday the group's limited resources made it difficult to compete with the military technology Japan employs to guard its whaling fleet and it would not send ships to the Southern Ocean this year. |
Hurricane Harvey much less damaging than Katrina, Sandy: Hannover Re Posted: 28 Aug 2017 07:11 AM PDT Damages from Harvey, the hurricane and tropical storm ravaging Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast, are estimated to be well below those from major storms that have hit New Orleans and New York, according to Hannover Re on Monday. Hannover Re, one of the world's largest reinsurers, said that insured losses for Katrina in 2005 were around $80 billion, while losses from Sandy in 2012 were $36 billion. "We are far from Katrina and Sandy in magnitude in the case of Hurricane Harvey," a spokeswoman for the company said. |
Hurricane Harvey And The Potential Hypocrisy Of Texas Republicans Posted: 28 Aug 2017 02:47 PM PDT WASHINGTON ― Texas Republicans, long accustomed to bashing the federal government, are already changing their tune now that Hurricane Harvey has devastated parts of their state. An emergency aid package hasn't surfaced yet, but Congress almost certainly will have to approve a spending bill to help those affected by the hurricane-force winds and widespread flooding in southeastern Texas. The question is whether that money will be offset by cuts to other government programs, whether extraneous spending will be attached to the package, and whether, under any circumstances, Texas Republicans will have a problem voting for it. |

Sixteen-year-old Nathaniel Jouett had been baptized this summer and was helping the church raise money to send teen members to youth camp just days before he opened fire Monday afternoon at the Clovis-Carver Public Library, Pastor David Stevens said in a telephone interview. Hey, everyone, please shut up about Melania Trump's shoes Posted: 29 Aug 2017 10:35 AM PDT There are many things to be concerned about right now in Texas. Melania Trump's stilettos are not one of them. As the Trumps made their way to Air Force One on Tuesday morning to travel to Corpus Cristi, Texas, Twitter users couldn't help but comment that the first lady's choice of footwear wasn't appropriate under the circumstances. Many called her fashion choice ignorant, considering the trip was part of disaster relief, but taking the time to troll Melania's heels isn't particularly productive either. SEE ALSO: Trump explains why he pardoned Joe Arpaio during a hurricane and oh please no After photographs of the two boarding Air Force One in Maryland started appearing online, people noticed that Donald was wearing a rain jacket and boots, while Melania donned fashionable cropped pants and stilettos. People couldn't help but call out the fact that the bold fashion choice seemed a bit insensitive to the disaster victims in Texas. Melania. Is. Wearing. Six. Inch. Stiletto. Heels. To. Visit. A. Disaster. Zone.These. People. Just....These. People. https://t.co/g6d4zGqWZU — emigre80 (@emigre80) August 29, 2017 What was your first clue that this Texas trip was to be nothing more than a fake, useless photo op? Really, people? Melania Trump wears high heels to board Air Force One en route to Texas.Image: JIM WATSON/AFP/Getty ImagesWhen there are much more serious problems in the world — like, you know, THE STORM — it begs the question: Why the heck are we talking about shoes? Here are some reasons why we should just let this one go: Melania had a change of shoes on Air Force One. By the time they landed in Corpus Christi, where Harvey made landfall, she'd changed into white sneakers. Some Houston residents have lost everything, a city has been completely displaced, and the death count from the storm is still rising. In comparison, this debate over appropriate footwear is utterly meaningless and isn't helping anyone. Team, the Trumps aren't going to Houston so it doesn't matter what heels FLOTUS wears. Also she can always change on AF1. https://t.co/3su0YpK4Ck — Yashar Ali (@yashar) August 29, 2017 Oh em gee leave Melania alone folks. Makes our side look stupid. Save your comments for Arapaio, Putin, financial trails et al. — Sandee McMaster (@sandee_mcmaster) August 29, 2017 leave melania and her shoes alone. first of all it's not important and second she's probably trapped in a way few of us understand. — Kelly Eng (@boomereng) August 29, 2017 Like someone is going to ask Melania to clear rubble?!? 'Oh, sorry, I would have helped if I had my galoshes on!' Sheeeez.leave her alone — Pam Riste (@olystubbies44) August 29, 2017 According to a tweet from CNN's Kate Bennett, Melania's communications director released a statement condemning the criticism amidst an ongoing natural disaster. from @FLOTUS comms dir: "It's sad that we have an active and ongoing natural disaster in Texas, and people are worried about her shoes." — Kate Bennett (@KateBennett_DC) August 29, 2017 In the past the Trumps have made it very easy for people to troll them, what with everything from controversial magazine covers to pardoning convicted former sheriff Joe Arpaio right before Harvey "for the ratings." We get it. But there's a time and a place for criticism and for calling out behavior so inappropriate and disrespectful that it can't possibly be ignored. The time is not now. Now, the focus should remain on Houston, not heels. WATCH: Hurricane Harvey is the strongest hurricane to hit the US in 12 years |
