The warning follows the weekend terror attacks in London, which were claimed by the Islamic State group, and comes amid a growing jihadist threat in the Philippines. IS fighters will "come back with battlefield skills, they'll come back with hardened ideology, they'll come back angry, frustrated, and we need to be very aware of that," Australian Defence Minister Marise Payne said. |

Key members of Mr Trump's national security team, including national security adviser HR McMaster, Defence Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, all believed he would endorse the article. "They had the right speech and it was cleared through McMaster," a source briefed by National Security Council officials told Politico. |

The election for more than 1,600 communes would not mean a major shift in power, but could be a springboard for next year's general election, in which Hun Sen aims to extend more than three decades in power in the Southeast Asian country. Jailed Venezuela opposition leader urges more anti-Maduro protests Posted: 04 Jun 2017 07:40 PM PDT A prominent opposition leader jailed in Venezuela, Leopoldo Lopez, urged more street protests against the "tyranny" of President Nicolas Maduro, in a video message made in his cell. Prosecutors in Venezuela say 65 people have died since April 1, when near-daily pro- and anti-Maduro rallies turned more violent, with protesters and security forces targeted. The opposition and anti-Maduro protesters are demanding early elections to force out the widely unpopular president, who has ruled over the country's sharply declining economy. |

Bahrain, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen and the Maldives also severed ties with gas-rich Qatar, which Riyadh accused of supporting groups, including some backed by Iran, "that aim to destabilise the region". Qatar denied any support for extremists and accused its neighbours of seeking to put the country under "guardianship". |

Apple unveils watchOS 4 and the future of Apple Watch Posted: 05 Jun 2017 10:19 AM PDT We're past 10:00 AM in San Jose, California, which means that WWDC 2017 has officially begun. Apple's keynote on Monday should be jam-packed with announcements, as some attendees say they were told the event could last upwards of two hours. But for now, we'll focus on the company's first big reveal of the day: watchOS 4 and all of the new features coming to the Apple Watch.
In watchOS 4, watch faces will have complications of their own, allowing them to change dynamically depending on the day or the time of day. Apple is also introducing a new Siri watch face that will display a timeline of relevant information decided upon by machine learning. So for all intents and purposes, it's basically the Apple Watch's own version of Google Now. If you're more interested in neat visuals than a stream of information, you can use the kaleidoscope watch face instead. Apple has also teamed up with Disney once again to bring watch faces of Woody, Jesse and Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story franchise to the Apple Watch. Back to more functional additions, Apple has refreshed the UI for the Workout app with new challenges, new animations and a new mode for High Intensity Interval Training. watchOS 4 can also interact with gym equipment via NFC, so that your Apple Watch can see what you're doing on a wide variety of connected machines from brands like Cybex, Life Fitness and StairMaster. Additionally, watchOS 4 offers a long-awaited update to the Music app, adds a new dock to scroll through recently used apps and brings Apple News to the Apple Watch for the first time. A developer preview of watchOS 4 will be available today, with the full release coming this fall. Be sure to visit our WWDC 2017 hub for all the latest news from Apple's big event. |

Saudi, UAE seize chance to isolate Qatar Posted: 05 Jun 2017 07:27 AM PDT Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, emboldened by US President Donald Trump's new approach to the region, have seized the chance to isolate Qatar, analysts said Monday. Gas-rich Doha, which has long exercised an independent streak in its foreign policy, last month denied comments which appeared on its official news agency questioning US hostility towards Iran. Qatar blamed hackers for a string of explosive remarks attributed to its Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani after Trump visited Saudi Arabia, its giant neighbour. |

Mexico ruling party claims win in key state, rivals cry foul Posted: 04 Jun 2017 10:35 PM PDT Mexico's ruling party narrowly held onto the governorship of the country's largest state Sunday, according to preliminary election results, but a fiery leftist hoping to ride the race to the presidency cried foul. The election in the state of Mexico, President Enrique Pena Nieto's home state, was closely watched as a bellwether ahead of presidential polls next year. It was a must-win race for Pena Nieto and the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which had to fend off a fierce challenge from an upstart leftist party, the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), and its founder, presidential hopeful Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. |
Yet another study shows Verizon and T-Mobile are the fastest networks Posted: 05 Jun 2017 03:32 PM PDT For the last decade, the wisdom of the ancients has held that there are two types of wireless network in the US: cheap and slow, or expensive and good. T-Mobile and Sprint were cheap, and AT&T and Verizon were fast. But the last two years has seen a complete upset in the way networks work. T-Mobile became good, Verizon became cheap, and AT&T started bribing people with cheap cable. This week, a new study has come out confirming the new world order, and it has T-Mobile and Verizon on top.
The data comes from SpeedSmart, a company that uses crowdsourced speedtest data from an app to analyze network speeds in different cities. The May 2017 data paints a clear picture of domination by Verizon and T-Mobile. "In our top 40 cities list, Verizon and T-Mobile are the fastest or second fastest network 52 times combined out of a possible 80. The two are dominating in network performance with many cities seeing over 30 Mbps average download speed." To put that in perspective, the average download speed on 4G nationwide is about 15Mbps, so Verizon and T-Mobile and handily outperforming the average in most big cities. Just outside of average download speed, T-Mobile and Verizon are also doing a good job. Another useful metric is the percentage of time those networks show a download speed greater than 10Mbps, as it's a decent indication of how often users have a fast mobile internet connection. As you can see from the graph, T-Mobile and Verizon are tied at 61%, with AT&T trailing not far behind. Sprint is at a woeful 46%, by comparison. It's worth mentioning that crowdsourced speed data like this is just one way of measuring network quality, and it entirely omits any fair measure of coverage. Verizon customers are still far more likely to get a good signal indoor or in rural areas compared to T-Mobile, as it uses lower-band spectrum that travels further and penetrates buildings better. Crowdsourced speed testing like this is going to reflect coverage in big cities much more heavily, so it's not a good way for people living in rural areas (or frequent roadtrippers) to make a choice of network. |
