Sons of slain Saudi journalist Khashoggi appeal for return of his body Posted: 04 Nov 2018 04:32 PM PST The sons of slain Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi on Sunday issued an appeal for the return of their father's body and said they wanted to return to Saudi Arabia to bury him. In an interview with CNN, Salah and Abdullah Khashoggi said that without their father's body, their family is unable to grieve and deal with the emotional burden of their father's death. All what we want right now is to bury him in Al-Baqi (cemetery) in Medina (Saudi Arabia) with the rest of his family," Salah Khashoggi said. |

Midterm election glossary: The terms you need to know to understand American politics Posted: 05 Nov 2018 01:18 PM PST With the 2018 midterm elections just a week away, the casual reader may be coming across some strange terms in the American political lexicon. For anyone confused by reports on the battle between Democrats and Republicans to control Congress, The Independent has compiled a handy list of some common terms. Battleground State: A state is considered a battleground state if its electorate is split relatively evenly between Republicans and Democrats, making state-wide races especially competitive and hard to predict. |

Indonesia jet had damaged airspeed indicator on last four flights: official Posted: 05 Nov 2018 03:04 AM PST Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) said on Monday an airspeed indicator of a Boeing Co. 737 MAX plane that crashed last week killing all 189 people on board was damaged for its last four flights. The damage was revealed after data had been downloaded from the plane's flight data recorder, KNKT chief Soerjanto Tjahjono told reporters, adding that it was asking Boeing and U.S. authorities what action to take to prevent similar problems on this type of plane around the world. "We are formulating, with NTSB and Boeing, detailed inspections regarding the airspeed indicator," he said, referring to the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board. |
Britain's senior royals help UK prepare for life after Brexit Posted: 04 Nov 2018 11:48 AM PST Taking tea with Osei Tutu II, the Asantahene or king of Ghana's Asante people, and a reception with paramount rulers is all in a day's work for the Prince of Wales. As heir to a throne occupied by his mother Queen Elizabeth II for almost as long as he has been alive, Prince Charles, who turns 70 this month, has spent his life at such occasions. London is scrambling for a deal before March 29 and Britain's most recognisable and trusted brand -- the House of Windsor -- is helping to prepare for life after Brexit. |

Britain calls for UN Security Council to back ceasefire in Yemen Posted: 04 Nov 2018 04:26 PM PST Britain has called for the UN Security Council to take action over the war in Yemen, as international pressure grows on both sides. "Now for the first time there appears to be a window in which both sides can be encouraged to come to the table, stop the killing and find a political solution that is the only long term way out of disaster," said Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt. "The UK will use all its influence to push for such an approach." The Foreign Secretary's renewed call to support an end to Yemen's conflict followed a meeting with UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths, who has been trying to advance peace talks in the neglected conflict. One of the Arab world's poorest countries, Yemen has been caught in a devastating war since March 2015, when a Saudi-led coalition launched a massive military campaign to oust Iran-backed Houthi rebels and restore the country's official government to power. Three and a half years on, much of Yemen's infrastructure is in ruins. Eight million of the country's 28 million people rely on UN food rations to survive, and experts predict widespread famine. The UK is one of the top arms suppliers to Saudi Arabia, after sales rose two-thirds in 2017. Mr Griffiths has pushed for a nationwide ceasefire in Yemen, the start of a UN-led process that could lead to an end to the conflict and eventual peace talks. The Foreign Secretary said the time was right for the UK to discuss with its UN Security Council partners how to bolster this process, days after the US made a rare appeal for a ceasefire in the country. Renewed attention on the conflict has come amid widespread condemnation of Saudi Arabia and its powerful Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, who is the chief architect of Yemen's war. MBS, as the crown prince is known, is suspected of ordering the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the country's consulate in Istanbul one month ago. Saudi Arabia and bin Salman deny his involvement. The incident has thrown a light on the crown prince's broader foreign policy decisions, apparently bringing the widely forgotten conflict in Yemen back onto the global agenda. |

Prince Charles acknowledges UK role in horror of slave trade Posted: 05 Nov 2018 06:21 AM PST "At Osu Castle on Saturday, it was especially important to me – as indeed it was on my first visit there forty-one years ago – that I should acknowledge the most painful chapter of Ghana's relations with the nations of Europe, including the United Kingdom," Charles said. "The appalling atrocity of the slave trade, and the unimaginable suffering it caused, left an indelible stain on the history of our world." Britain abolished the trans-Atlantic slave trade in 1807 although the full abolition of slavery did not follow for another generation. Two days ago the prince visited Christiansborg Castle in Osu which originally operated as a Danish slave trade fort and from where it is estimated more than 1.5 million Africans were traded. |
California teacher caught on camera in brawl with student Posted: 05 Nov 2018 02:37 PM PST A California high school teacher is facing charges for punching a pupil who had hurled racial slurs at him, in an incident that many students and staff say was justified. Music teacher Marston Riley, 64, is seen in video footage confronting a 14-year-old student for not wearing the proper uniform. Students told the local KTLA news station that the teen refused to leave the classroom as instructed and began shouting profanity and the N-word at Riley, who is black. |

Nate Silver just discovered mansplaining Posted: 05 Nov 2018 09:10 AM PST On this day we congratulate Nate Silver, who has discovered that it is frustrating when a man explains your own area of expertise to you. On Sunday, the FiveThirtyEight editor-in-chief logged on to complain about "dudes (it's almost *always* dudes) who spend 15 minutes on something you've been studying for 10+ years and act like they've solved Fermat's Last Theorem." And the women of Twitter said, "yup." You've just described being a woman in a tweet. — Maria Robinson (@mduaime) November 4, 2018 Dude I have a carload of female scientists I'd like you to meet — Mara "Get Rid of the Nazis" Wilson (@MaraWilson) November 4, 2018 Where do mansplainers go to drink?A well, actually. — Madame Librarian (@YayBooksYay) November 4, 2018 OMG welcome to our world. #WomenGetMansplainedAllDayLong — Vote Dem November 6th (@ManMet80) November 4, 2018 Those types explain my own career to me daily then usually have a meltdown when I explain to them I have more experience than they do. But a little more empathy from men in the public eye is never a bad thing. (Nate, you get this whole thing now, right? Right? Oh, god.) Now, back to worrying about the midterms. Saudi, allies say committed to de-escalating Yemen conflict Posted: 04 Nov 2018 11:39 PM PST Saudi Arabia and its allies said Monday they are committed to de-escalating hostilities in Yemen, only days after launching a renewed offensive on a port crucial for humanitarian aid. "The coalition is committed to de-escalating hostilities in Yemen and is strongly supportive of the UN envoy's political process," a source in the Saudi-led coalition told AFP on condition of anonymity. Saudi Arabia and its allies intervened in the conflict in 2015, aiming to bolster the standing of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi as he fought an insurgency by the Shiite Huthis from northern Yemen. |

Exclusive: Pentagon balked at U.S. border troops building detention facilities - officials Posted: 05 Nov 2018 11:37 AM PST The disclosure by U.S. officials, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, illustrates the tension within the administration over using military resources to fortify the border against illegal immigration, a top election issue for President Donald Trump's base. Last week, the military announced that over 7,000 troops would go to the border with Mexico as a caravan of Central American migrants slowly heads toward the United States. The U.S. military declined a draft proposal from the Department of Homeland Security last month to build housing for detained migrants during early discussions in the Trump administration about the military's role on the border, the officials said. |
